And then the data was compared with the actual age of the subjects.

As is easy to calculate, the experiment lasted 12 years. During the study, 30 respondents died. The reasons why they did not live to be 38 were different: some died in an accident, some died from cancer and other diseases, and some simply committed suicide.

For everyone else, the researchers added up all the variables to create a complete picture. Answering the question: Why do some people age faster and others slower?

What's important is this. Usually such studies are carried out on old people, but here scientists decided to study not the problems of longevity, but the problems of the appearance of middle-aged people.

Most studies concern older people. But if we want to learn how to prevent the development of age-related diseases, then it is better to study the bodies of young people,” explains Dan Belsky, lead author of the study.

To start: It turned out that this is so. Among 38-year-old respondents, data on their biological age varied greatly: from 28 years to 61 years.
And further. An independent group of people were asked to estimate the age of study participants from photographs. Here again, participants with greater biological age were perceived as older.

And the main conclusion: how quickly you age depends only 20% on your lifestyle and environment, and 80% - from genetics. Each of us has our own aging gene, and in some people it is very active, while in others it is not so much.

7% of the population has genes inherited from both parents that make us look 8-10 years older than our age. The rest is “obtained” through a destructive lifestyle - like those guys who looked 60 at 38.

Another 38% of people, due to genes, are on average 4 years older than their peers. In 55% of the population this genetic material is not found at all.

Thus, scientists were able to show that aging and wear and tear of the body are associated not only with the passage of time, the influence of the environment and bad habits, but also with heredity - some people are doomed from birth to early old age.
