The best locks for metal doors. Choosing a lock for the front door: which one is better? Top padlocks

These days, entrance doors are sold as a basic set (frame and door leaf) or as a complete set, which also includes trim, hinges, handles, locks, a peephole and a chain. The first option is usually cheaper and allows the owner of a house or apartment to independently choose the necessary fittings and accessories. But choosing a lock for a door is quite difficult: you need to correctly evaluate its material, design features and location, as well as the weight, dimensions, design, security and burglary resistance of the lock itself. Of course, sales consultants can always give professional advice. But in order to understand some of the nuances when choosing a lock and understand the technical parameters of this complex product, you need to familiarize yourself with its features in advance.

Did you know?

The history of the castle can be seen as a centuries-old competition between inventors and burglars. For the first time, the simplest locks on doors appeared in China and Egypt. With their help, rulers protected food supplies, treasures and their lives. Locking devices were made by carpenters, and from strong wood. Metal locks have been known in Europe since the times of Ancient Rome. The Celts made a special contribution to the lockmaking industry, making the first all-metal locking devices - both overhead and removable. And mass production of door locks began at the beginning of the 18th century.

The best of the best

The modern market offers hundreds of names of different lock models, so it is very difficult to navigate the variety of these products.

Sellers usually classify mechanical locks into “inexpensive but quite good”, “expensive and very good” and “very expensive and super reliable”. By the former, they mean most products of Turkish, Chinese and domestic production. Most Finnish, German, Italian and Israeli castles are most often classified as locks in the next price category. And, finally, products from Austrian and English companies: they will cost the buyer no less than 10 thousand rubles. And if you add the cost of additional devices (armor plate, armor plate, magnetic protection, etc.), then the price can become even more impressive.

Location

Locks come in padlocks, mortise locks and overhead locks. With the help of the former, utility rooms, sheds and garages are closed. Mortise locks are protected by the door leaf in which they are attached. Invoices are installed on the inside of the door (wooden or metal). They are usually locked not only with a key, but also with a turntable or latch. In terms of resistance to burglary, rim and mortise locks are quite similar. They are suitable for installation on both wooden and metal doors. The choice between them is determined by the technical characteristics and preferences of the buyer.

The door-lock tandem has one feature: the design of the door leaf is capable of protecting the latter from certain types of burglary, but even the most powerful and ingenious lock is not able to “help” a flimsy door. Therefore, it is she who determines the appropriate type of lock. Although there are still quite a few wooden entrance doors left in our country, reliable metal ones (most often of economy class) have now become the norm. As a result, attackers primarily attack locks.

Top secret!

All locks are classified according to the design of the locking mechanisms. Now the most popular of them are cylinder, lever and combined.

Cylinder

The main part of such locks is a replaceable secret mechanism called a cylinder, or cylinder. Inside it there are pins (pins), which, if they match the pattern of the key, allow you to rotate the moving part of the cylinder. Since these parts are quite miniature, when purchasing a lock it is worth asking what metal they are made of. For “budget” models they are made of brass, for more expensive ones they are made of steel, which increases both the service life of the product and the resistance of the cylinder to drilling. To make it difficult to open locks, some manufacturers reject balls and rods made of hard alloys into the mechanism body.

Special protection

Experienced locksmiths recommend installing cylinder locks complete with special protection - an armor plate. It is in this version that the locks become reliable and practically unpickable.

Level

Such locks are otherwise called safe locks. Their secrecy is ensured by metal plates with specially shaped slots, called levers. When you turn the “native” key, they occupy a certain position that allows the bolt (crossbar) to move. Otherwise, a special protrusion on its shank will rest against the edge of the slot and block movement.

When choosing a locking device model, pay attention to the keyhole and key. A high-quality key has all edges of the bits well polished, and the corners are straight. The impressive size of the keyhole can allow a thief to easily manipulate tools, so it should be narrow. The disadvantages of a lever lock are the large size of the key and the need to lock the door with it both from the outside when leaving the house and from the inside when returning, which is not always convenient.

Combined

In these locks, two mechanisms are enclosed in one body - a cylinder and a lever. This increases the reliability of the locking device: after all, the methods for opening such mechanisms differ greatly from each other, and thieves often specialize in only one type of lock. Combined models are usually expensive, and the work required to install them is quite painstaking.

A high-quality door structure, which will guarantee the security of a country house or apartment, must be equipped with high-quality locks for the metal entrance door.

Elements such as door hinges are able to determine the stability, as well as the high soundproofing qualities of a metal door. Parameters such as reliability and structural strength will directly depend on the quality of the installed locking device.

Currently, consumers are offered a wide variety of types and categories of door lock designs. The choice of a particular mechanism should be based on the type of door structure, the required degree of reliability and the required level of fire safety.

In addition, when purchasing a quality door lock, you need to take into account not only the quality, but also the level of ease of use.

Now, during the purchasing process, it is important to pay attention to the external characteristics of the device in order to give the interior and the door itself an attractive and pleasant appearance.

Regardless of which door is installed, a simple lock will not protect against entry into the room; it will not resist the efforts of an experienced thief. In order to protect yourself and all your property as seriously as possible, you need to take the purchase of a locking device with great responsibility.

With an ideal lock, the likelihood that the apartment will be burglarized is minimized. Below we will describe what locks are offered, as well as how to select them.

Classes of door entrance locks for metal doors

The modern market offers a wide variety of door locks for iron doors, each of them has its own protection class.

As a rule, such a parameter is indicated in a special passport and ranges from I to IV. Each of the classes is worth studying in detail:

  • I class- These are ordinary serial locks of simple design. The devices will not be a serious obstacle for an experienced burglar, especially for a professional. Moreover, even a beginner will spend no more than 5 minutes to enter such a room;
  • II safety class- these are locks that are characterized as being a little more reliable. Hacking may take longer;
  • III class– this class includes locks that are distinguished by a higher degree of reliability;
  • IV class has a high quality and level of protection. Such a device is difficult to open, even with special equipment.

In addition to the protection class, the variety of locks is also based on design features.

Structural differences between locking devices

Modern manufacturers offer a wide selection of different locks.

Among them, these types of mechanisms are especially popular, How:

  • crossbar;
  • level;
  • cylinder;
  • electronic.

Each of the above types has its own positive characteristics and disadvantages. It is worth familiarizing yourself with each type to facilitate the selection process.

Crossbar devices

Deadbolt locks for metal doors, which are also called rack locks, belong to the first class of protection. These mechanisms have a simple mechanism. The keys have a flat design, with grooves cut on both sides. It is due to them that the device works.

Read how to adjust a plastic door.

The main feature of a deadbolt lock is that it is equipped with special handles on both sides. This is quite convenient not only for the apartment owner and for the thief. If necessary, this lock can be easily and simply opened without using a standard master key.

Cylinder lock

Such devices can be of different types and protection classes, respectively. Some are the simplest ones, which can be opened with a standard pin; for others, trying to find a high-quality master key is simply impossible. These devices are usually not hacked, they are simply broken out. As soon as the larva falls inside from the impact, the door opens very easily.

The level of security of such a device directly depends on the features of its device. Locks that belong to class III or IV are usually equipped with a special tab, which is made of armored sheet metal. It contains special balls made of steel. This lock is very difficult to break and also to knock out the cylinder.

Level locks

Lever locks for metal doors are now in great demand. The name of this mechanism is based on the fact that the structure contains special steel plates. It is from them that such a locking mechanism consists. To open, it is necessary that all the plates present be arranged in a certain order, which is indicated by the type and shape of the key.

The key to such a locking device looks like a regular rod, equipped with two plates located at the end. They have one-of-a-kind grooves cut into them. Such levers line up in direct proportion to the shape of the grooves on the key and the device immediately opens.

Locks of this type are also offered with different security classes. The level depends on how many levers the locking device has, what type of metal they are made from, and it also matters whether or not the lock contains an element such as an armor plate.

Main types of cylinder locks

Among the wide variety of lock options offered, cylinder locks are very popular.

At the moment, several types of these mechanisms are offered:

  1. Single-row pin devices. Essentially, these are locking and code pins, they are made of high-quality steel, and they are lined up strictly in one row. Code ones, as a rule, have a regular cylindrical shape; as for locking ones, they can have a notch that looks like a fungus.
  2. Pin double row locks. In these mechanisms, the pins are arranged strictly two in a row, respectively, their number is twice as large. To close and open this type of lock, a special double-sided key is used.
  3. Cross-shaped devices. Here the code pins are arranged in the shape of a cross, therefore the key and the keyhole itself are similar in external characteristics to a cross. In these locks, the number of rows may vary - approximately 3-4 rows. Each contains two or more pins.
  4. Special cylinder locks having conical milling on the key. Mechanisms of this type can contain from 2 to 4 rows of pins. The number of rows can be up to five. They are located in planes of different levels, which significantly increases the secrecy of the locking device, as well as the number of possible code options.
  5. Cylinder locks equipped with rotating pins. This is a fairly small type and type of device, which is distinguished by the presence of special rotary pins.

The choice of one type of device or another directly depends on material capabilities and individual preferences.

How to choose the right mortise lock

When choosing, you need to study the documents and instructions that are usually included. This is a passport, which usually indicates the protection and safety class of the device. As a rule, locking mechanisms with a class of 2 to 4 will be accompanied by a special certificate of conformity.

The first class is usually not certified. When choosing and purchasing, it will not be superfluous to inspect its appearance; it is important to exclude smudges of destructive rust.

The choice of a lock for a metal door should be made with the question of what object the lock is being purchased for.

Modern buyers have a choice of different types of mechanisms, which differ in the method of fastening to the door leaf:

  • secure mortise locks for entrance doors– they are cut into the door structure using special tools. Despite the relatively complex installation, such locks are quite popular;
  • invoices– have a special box-shaped shape. Mechanisms of this type can be installed directly on the door leaf, and also cut into a previously prepared compartment;
  • mounted– partially or completely separated from the door structure. This is the basis of their main drawback, that is, despite the high-quality core, they are relatively easy to hack.

When buying a lock, you need to pay attention to the thickness of the steel sheets from which the door structure is made. If this indicator does not exceed 4 mm, you should not buy a very large lock, since its weight can deform the door leaf.

Speaking about the highest level of security, it is necessary to highlight the lever locks. After installation, their mechanism is located strictly inside the door; in order to break it, you first need to get to it using all possible methods.

To ensure a high level of security, it is worth installing two types of locking devices on the door at the same time - lever and cylinder. Moreover, the higher the protection class, the better.

The front door, even a metal one, will not provide security on its own: you need a reliable lock. A strong, durable, burglary-resistant mechanism is more expensive than a door, but it makes your apartment or house feel like a fortress.

type of instalation

There are locks:

  • mortise;
  • loose-leaf;
  • invoices;
  • mounted

Mounted ones are not purchased for residential purposes. Invoices are rarely used due to the inconvenience of installation and lack of aesthetics. More often they choose mortise and inset locks.
The mortise is located inside the door leaf, is attached to it, is not visible from the outside, and is closed at the end with a strip. Inset is a type of mortise. It is installed between two steel door leaves and is its element.
Large-sized, designed specifically for heavy, durable structures, available with additional fastening. The downside is that if you are forced to change the lock, you will have to disassemble the door.

Important: the entrance to a house or apartment must be equipped with high-security mortise or inset locking mechanisms.

What are they made of?

All parts must be made of stainless steel. Heat-treated, often containing special additives of chemical elements for strength and to prevent drilling of parts.
Products made of hard metal-ceramic and aluminum alloys are also acceptable. Soft metals are not suitable because they are prone to oxidation due to temperature changes, which leads to deformation of internal mechanisms and difficulty opening with a key.

Important: locks made entirely or partially from plastic, silumin, and other fragile materials can only be installed on doors inside the apartment.

Purpose

There are two groups:

  • simply locking, also called upper;
  • fixing-locking ones with a halyard mechanism, or lower ones, with handles.

The handle acts as a latch actuator, or otherwise, a tongue that holds the door in the closed position. The latches here are not the main detail; there are also crossbars and a “secret”.

Important: for greater reliability, two locks are cut into the entrance doors: one secures and locks, the other locks additionally.

Security classes

There are four of them - from the first to the fourth, indicated in the passport. It was found that it takes a burglar 5-10 minutes to open a class 1 locking device. From a quarter of an hour to 20 minutes - to open a 2nd class lock. Only 3 and 4 are suitable for street doors. They are difficult to hack even with special equipment.

Important: the entrance group requires enhanced protection. It is preferable to install a device of safety class 4.

Secrecy

This concept includes several indicators: the theoretically possible number of lock and key combinations, resistance to impacts and opening with a master key, probability of picking up keys, strength.
Low-security locks have combinations ranging from 10 positions to 10 thousand; there is no anti-vandal protection. The keys and pins are simple, the materials are fragile, the assembly is of poor quality and imprecise.
On average there are up to 5 million possible combinations, a complex pin system. The internal parts are made of steel, and the handles and body are made of less durable materials.
Locks for high-security entrance doors provide up to a billion combinations, protection against master keys and mechanical influence. The materials are highly durable, resistant to fire and acids. High quality assembly of precision manufactured parts.

Internal mechanisms

The secrecy of constipation is ensured by an internal mechanism called a lock. The advantage of cylinder locks is that they are easy to replace: if necessary, only the cylinder, the main part of the device, is replaced. The key for it is adjusted to an exclusive pin combination. If they do not match, the lock will not budge.
There are many varieties of cylinder models:

  • Cross-shaped - with good security, but poor resistance to burglary: can be opened with a suitable screwdriver.
  • Pin ones, if tailored to an English key, are low secret: the number of possible combinations is small. If the key is perforated, the secrecy can be 3rd, even 4th class. It will be possible to open the lock only by knocking out the cylinder. Protection with armor plates is required.
  • The internal locking mechanism of disc locks contains moving discs connected to each other at a certain angle, which further increases secrecy. And it is not possible to drill out the cylinder - it turns.
  • Instead of a key, magnetic cylinders are equipped with a key fob, which is applied to the cylinder and turned. There is no well - there is no possibility to use a master key. But there is an armor plate - for reading the code and at the same time strengthening the mechanism.
  • Eurocylinders have increased security. These are inserts made of super-hard alloys, armored linings, titanium cases, an increased degree of secrecy, and a magnet in the key.

A lever lock consists of plates that, under the influence of a key, are installed in a specific combination. If it is correct, the lock opens. If there is a mismatch, it will remain closed. The lock, which can be called reliable, has 6 levers and protection against master keys. Such locks are resistant to burglary, cold, moisture, durable, and widely applicable.

Important: if the seller calls a lever lock a safe, he is being disingenuous. Safe locks are installed only in safes.

Deadbolt locks are recognized as unreliable for entrance doors. The device has a low security level, master keys can be easily selected for it, the key is large, simple, and easy to copy.
Combination locks are popular - they have cylinder and lever mechanisms that complement each other. At the same time, an attempt to hack one blocks the other.
Electronic-mechanical, electronic locks or smartlocks. To enter a door with such a lock, one key is not enough. You need to dial a code, or insert an electronic (magnetic) card, or leave a fingerprint, or allow the retina to be scanned.
There are even invisible locks like Flash lock with remote control. There are no key holes on the door, making it almost impossible for unauthorized persons to enter.

Rating of locks: best manufacturers and best-selling models

Recognized leaders are the following companies: Italian Cisa and Mottura, Israeli Mul-T-Lock, Finnish Abloy, Spanish Tesa, etc. Reliable products are produced by Russian manufacturers Mettem, Guardian, Kerberos, Elbor and Crete.
Please note, ABUS EP-10, cylindrical pin lock, made in Germany. Entirely made of extra strong steel. The cylinder cannot be knocked out.

Finnish lever lock ABLOY. A million combinations, the body is made of durable steel, additionally reinforced with armor plates. The hook-shaped bolt makes it difficult to knock out the mechanism.

A popular lever lock CISA 57.986.48 with four bolts, a reverse latch, two bolts for vertical locking, and a durable cover for the levers.

The Italian lock MOTTURA 54Y787 with four cylindrical bolts, a changing secret element, and protection against knocking out the bolts is recognized as one of the most reliable locks.

The rating is topped by the coolest cylinder for any cylinder lock from the Austrian company EVVA, model MCS. Reinforcing the lock with a high-quality mortise armor plate will protect metal entrance doors from breaking and entering almost 100%.

Russian manufacturers, focusing on the best European models, produce locks of high quality, and sometimes at lower prices.

Lock service life

There is a difference between the warranty period - during which, if defects are found in the product, it can be exchanged or repaired free of charge, and the service life of the product - until it wears out. The actual service life is significantly longer than the warranty period.
Warranty periods for locks are short - from six months to two years. During this time, all problems that arose due to the fault of the manufacturer will be identified. If the lock does not fail, it will continue to work for several more years.

Since locks are constantly being modernized, more reliable models appear, the owners change them every five years, even if they are still operational.
Picking up a modern secret lock for replacement on a metal entrance door, it is important to carefully study the features: the internal mechanism, additional protection, what it is made of, what are the properties. A reliable lock will preserve property, peace of mind and the safety of loved ones, so saving on this important item is not justified. Moreover, a high-quality lock will serve faithfully for decades.

Specialists from the lock picking company “New Castle” //newzamok.ru tell you about which lock models you should give preference to, how to increase the resistance of doors to burglary and how to secure your apartment from unauthorized access by intruders.

What kind of locks are installed on entrance doors?

Most of the locks on entrance doors are lever, cylinder or combined mortise-type mechanisms.

In locks of the first type, the work is performed by so-called levers, spring-loaded plates that respond only to a specific key. The more there are, the higher the level of secrecy of the castle. Lever models are characterized by increased protection against burglary, but they are more difficult to change, since malfunctions require replacement of the entire mechanism.

Cylinder locks are locks with a “cylinder” that turns only when a key with a specific combination of grooves is inserted into the hole. They are easier to change, but the level of burglary protection for standard cylinder models is lower.

Combination locks are complex mechanisms that use both lever and cylindrical systems.

Which manufacturers deserve attention first?

As in many other industries, in the field of locking mechanisms there are manufacturers who are considered unspoken leaders. Their products are high-quality, expensive locks that are not so easy to open or break into.

First of all, the specialists of the New Castle company noted the Cisa brand, the largest European manufacturer from Italy.

Among the impressive Cisa model range for apartment doors, the best option, according to the company, should be a lock Cisa 57.966, combined mechanism with the ability to recode New Cambio Facile. This model is equipped with both a lever system and a cylinder, independent of each other. The number of possible combinations of levers is more than 70 thousand. Complete with a good cylinder and armor plate it provides maximum protection against any break-ins. The cost of the castle is about 8,000 rubles.

A lock from another Italian manufacturer with 50 years of experience was noted in the same price category Securemme 2543– a combined model with recoding and 4 crossbars (the crossbar extension is 40 millimeters), the ability to connect vertical rods and a latch.

The next castle on the list is CisaBasic (57.665). Unlike the combined model 57.966, this lock is only a lever lock, but it also allows for recoding to increase secrecy in case of loss, replacement, or theft of keys - New Cambio. It is equipped with protection against driving in crossbars and other common types of opening. Fourth class of burglary resistance. The cost of Cisa Basic is about 7,000 rubles.

The well-known European brand Mottura is another time-tested manufacturer from the Apennine Peninsula. For entrance doors, experts recommend choosing lever-type locks Mottura 52783 or Mottura 52771, as well as a two-system model Mottura 54797.

Model 52783 is equipped with the ANTIDECO II protection system, meets the requirements of class 7 security, and is protected from drilling. Mottura 52771 with three or four bolts is equipped with keys with variable coding. The Easy Go system allows you to quickly replace the lock if necessary. The combined model 54797 is distinguished by a huge number of possible unlocking combinations - more than 117,000. The estimated cost of these Mottura models on the domestic market is 6000-7000 rubles.

The best cylinder locks are from Italy and Austria. In the first place is a mechanism with a high degree of protection against burglary CisaRS3(about 11,000 rubles) and Austrian EVVA 3KS(about 10,000 rubles). With over 8 billion possible combinations, the RS3 is tear-proof, bump-proof, drill-proof, and wax-proof, making it one of the best residential door cylinders with a patented key. EVVA 3KS - the “three curves” system cannot be opened with master keys or impact equipment, and protects the door from almost any type of opening. Thanks to the design features, these locks are better protected from dirt and frost.

Among Russian manufacturers, preference should be given to Guardian locks - a mortise lever model with a vertical drive and a latch Guardian 21.12(can be equipped with an end plate and armor plate) and a combination lock with two security mechanisms and 5 bolts Guardian 25.12. The cost of these locks is 2000-2500 rubles.

The New Castle company, which specializes in opening, replacing, and installing locks of any type, recommends installing several locking mechanisms of different types into the door at once. For example, both level and cylinder locks, or combination type locks. According to the experts, the Cisa 57.966 + Cisa RS3 cylinder kit has the best protective properties.

Experts advise additionally strengthening entrance doors to apartments and locking systems with armor plates and armor plates. This will further increase resistance to hacking.

It was noted that the key requirement for increased security is not only the installation of an expensive, reliable, burglar-resistant lock, but also the professional installation of a high-quality metal door. Even the best lock on a cheap door leaf will not cope with the responsibilities assigned to it.

Installation of locks from the company "New Castle"

Representatives of the company noted that they work with any type of locking mechanisms, including the best Cisa and Mottura locks. The locksmiths come to the client with a full range of locks for all types of doors.

Experts will tell you which lock is best to choose in a given situation, taking into account security requirements and budget.

The company provides an official guarantee for installed locks: for Italian locks for a period of 3 years, for other models - for a period of 1 year. If a warranty case arises during operation, locks are replaced at //newzamok.ru/ustanovka-i-zamena-zamkov-v-moskve free of charge.

Every person wants to feel safe in their home and not worry about the safety of their property. The front door and a good, reliable lock are the main barrier to burglars. You can't find the most perfect locking mechanisms. The only question is how much time and what devices will be needed to break the lock and the front door. Therefore, it is always important to know how to choose a door lock in order to protect yourself and your property as much as possible.

Door lock classes

Locks for the front door and their types have their own protection classes. Any lock must be accompanied by a passport indicating its class.

There are four in total:

Main types and types of door locks

  1. Deadbolt lock

The deadbolt lock has a rack and pinion unlocking mechanism. It barely reaches safety class I. Basics of the mechanism: a flat key, along the edges of which grooves are machined at different angles; The lock bolt has identical grooves. The key hits them and moves the bolt, thereby locking or unlocking the door.

A deadbolt (rack) lock is often equipped with handles to open entrance doors from the inside. This is a real gift for a burglar. A loop of fishing line, a thin hollow tube and the lock is opened in a couple of minutes. It can be installed on a regular wooden door.

  1. Cylinder lock

This is the most common type of lock. Some of them can be opened with a regular pin, while others are quite difficult to pick up a master key. Although a thief can deal a couple of strong blows to the lock cylinder so that it flies inside the room. The main feature of this type of lock is the key, which is shaped like a mushroom with a hollow in the middle.

The cylinder lock is familiar to many. To open it, an attacker will already need a drill with a hardened drill bit. The pins are drilled out with a drill, which form the lock code. Thieves also use a “roll” on such locks. It is shaped like a key with a lever attachment. Thanks to high-alloy steel, pins can be easily cut with it.

This does not mean at all that the cylinder lock and its types are completely hopeless. If you choose a mechanism with additional protection, then no “roll” or drill will take it. Reinforcing elements include sheet armor inserts and embedded hardened steel balls. It will be very difficult to knock down the pins, and the balls will not allow you to install the drill. A cylinder lock with an armor insert belongs to protection classes III and IV and is perfect for metal entrance doors.

  1. Level castle

The level lock, which was invented back in 1818, has not lost its relevance to this day. This locking mechanism uses levers. These are plates that are driven by the teeth of the key. The key is a rod with plates on which notches are cut.

The lock will not open, even if one of the levers fails. A potential burglar cannot move them without a key. The only option is to pick up the key. The safety class of a lever lock increases with the number of plates and the metal from which they are made. Additional armor plates also significantly increase the burglary resistance of metal doors.

  1. Electronic lock

Electronic locks are modern locking mechanisms. They do not have the usual keys, but instead use magnetic cards, remote controls or a code. A kind of additional protection for an electronic lock is the fact that an ordinary burglar, seeing such an unusual lock on a metal door, will be confused.

Electronic locks can be opened using a fingerprint. This protection can be bypassed by attaching a photo of the owner's fingerprint to the photocell. Electronic locks are good for everyone, but the only negative is the high cost.

What to look for when choosing a lock for your front door

The choice of door locks in specialized stores is very wide and it can be difficult for a buyer to determine how to choose a door lock that is optimally suitable for a metal door. Any lock must have a passport in accordance with the rules of the Russian Federation. If the passport indicates class from II to IV, then a certificate of conformity must be available (except for class I). A good lock should combine strength, reliability and resistance to possible burglary. Inspect the lock; there should be no rust or cracks.

The lock must also fit the door and door frame. Much depends on the thickness of the steel sheets of the iron door. If the metal thickness is less than 4 mm, a massive lock can simply deform the door. Many owners install locking mechanisms with long, heavy bolts. This, to some extent, increases security, but the weight of the lock with regular use quickly wears out the door and frame. For a wooden door, you also need to carefully select a lock that will not damage the door leaf and frame.

What types of locks are best for your front door?

So, how to choose a door lock that will become a real barrier and protector of your property. The best design for a metal door can be called a lever lock. The locking mechanism itself is located inside, and getting to it will require a lot of effort. Experts believe that it is optimal to install two types of locks in tandem at once - cylinder and lever. The number of crossbars is recommended from three or more, with armor inserts and class not lower than III.

Also a good option is to install combination locks. They use a dual mechanism (level and cylindrical), which can complement each other. For example, if they try to open one mechanism, the other is blocked automatically. A thief will have to spend a lot of time “dealing” with two systems at once. This is the best option for installation on a metal or wooden door.

In conclusion, it is worth recalling that you should never advertise the installation of a lock and show its key unnecessarily. An experienced burglar only needs to look at the key to remember its structure and determine the type of locking mechanism.
