DIY shelving: a universal furniture design. DIY wooden rack What to make racks from

You can store unnecessary things on a rack. This comfortable spot, the presence of which allows you to avoid cluttering the apartment. It is practical and simple in its structure and appearance. The rack will bring many benefits not only in the house, but also in the garage. You can also use it to arrange a storage room on the balcony.

How to make a rack with your own hands? To answer this question, let's prepare simple tools and materials. The manufacturing process is quick, and you don’t have to spend money buying similar furniture from a store.

Preparation of tools and materials

Before starting assembly, prepare the following accessories:

  • Fastening elements (screws);
  • Screwdrivers or screwdriver;
  • Jigsaw for cutting material;
  • Level and roulette;
  • Drawing tools (pencil, chalk).

Beginners should know what a rack can be made from; for this you will need:

  • Beam;
  • Reiki;
  • Shelves.

The selection of materials for the future shelving is done taking into account climatic conditions and purpose. The location of such structures in damp areas will cause corrosion of metal elements, and wooden base will begin to rot. To avoid such phenomena, you should use varnish and other protective coatings.

If you plan to use MDF or chipboard for shelves, then the material must be sawn before processing. You can do the procedure yourself using a jigsaw.

In the absence of tools, cutting is done in special stores. Many materials are suitable for making shelves: cut boards, thick glass, plywood, plastic.

Designs and drawings

Meet on the Internet different schemes and shelving drawings. You can choose any, but for best result changes will have to be made. It's all about the size of the place where the structure will stand. For measurements we will use a tape measure and a pencil.

If can twists or working tools will be stored on the rack, then the simplest design of the product is chosen. Meet various options DIY shelving.

The width and height of the product are selected depending on the room and the items being stored. It is not recommended to make long shelves; sagging is possible from heavy weight, or the shelf itself will bend under its own weight. In this case, its length should not exceed 90 cm.

It is also necessary to fasten the elements together with the calculation of the expected load. For this purpose, appropriate fasteners are selected. To attach the shelving unit to the wall brick type, you should take screws no more than 52 mm long, and if the wall is concrete, then 89 mm.

Having decided on the measurements and appearance of the rack, the design process moves on to the next stage of drawing development. Rough sketches are made general view, and the dimensions of the shelves are noted.

Step-by-step production

Detailed instructions for making racks can be divided into stages:

  • Base assembly.
  • Installation of boxes and shelves.
  • Finishing work.

Before installation begins, markings are applied to the wall. The shelving frame, made to cover the entire height of the wall, must be secured at the top and bottom. This will give it stability.

The rigidity of the structure will be given by a base made of wooden beam. Such a load-bearing support will serve as the key to success for the entire structure.

Depending on the size of the shelves, it is determined which type of timber to use. They can be square or rectangular in shape. To secure the base of the board and beams, self-tapping screws up to 3 cm long are used.

Each load-bearing support must be in a strictly vertical position during installation. To make the structure rigid, side transverse braces are installed. This condition is met if heavy objects are stored on the rack.

When the base is formed, it is necessary to begin installing the elements of the box. It is assembled from chipboard or MDF boards. Other types of materials are also used. Each slab is attached to the sides of the structure. The back wall remains uncovered.

Installation of shelves begins at last stage assemblies. To begin with, markings are applied to the walls of the structure. The method of fastening the shelves depends on the weight they must withstand.

Metal corners hold the load more effectively. The bars are mounted on them, then the shelves. It is better to choose self-tapping screws that secure the timber and the shelf a little longer than the thickness of the shelf by 6 mm.

On the Internet you can see photos of racks with different finishes. Every fan will find something interesting for themselves.

Photos of DIY shelving

Whatever technological innovations and design solutions modern furniture manufacturers offer us, shelving has been one of the most popular best solutions For . Moreover, we are talking not only about convenience, but also about the aesthetic component, because they can fit into the interior of any apartment, house or even garage. If you want to create an unusual and practical do-it-yourself rack for flowers or books, then you don’t have to have any carpentry skills. Enough to cook necessary materials, and also be patient.

Experienced furniture makers know firsthand that, in fact, any cabinet is a shelving unit with a back wall and doors. Therefore, having mastered the simple technology of assembling flower racks, you can easily make a full-fledged cabinet of any size.

How to determine dimensions

To create a flower rack, chipboard, MDF or plywood up to 20 mm thick are most often used. The boards that were used for are also quite suitable. By the way, natural wooden boards will be much better compared to plywood or chipboard.

The width of the shelves must be selected based on what you plan to store on them. So, shelves 250–300 mm wide are quite suitable for books or flowers. But for car tires or, for example, tools, the width should be larger - up to 700 mm.

As for the length of future shelves, the choice here also depends on what you plan to store on them. For light items (for example, souvenirs or soft toys), a wooden shelf up to 1500 mm long is suitable. But to store volumes of books, you will have to reduce the length of the shelf to 80 cm. Otherwise, the shelf may bend under the weight of things. If you plan to place the future shelving in the garage to place heavy objects on it, then it is better to reinforce the shelves with metal corners or other reinforcements.

The size of the future rack, as well as the expected load on the shelves, determines the set of necessary fastenings. Thus, self-tapping screws for concrete up to 90 mm long are suitable for light structures. For brickwork It is best to use dowels with self-tapping screws up to 52 mm long. But for large and heavy shelving in the garage, it is necessary to additionally strengthen the structure with anchors or hooks.

How to make a rack with your own hands

  • Screwdriver (ideally a screwdriver);
  • Dowels, self-tapping screws (length depends on the type of wall);
  • The shelves themselves (suitable material is described above, we will give an example of creating a rack made of wood with shelves measuring 19x305x183 mm);
  • Support beam measuring 38x89x390 mm;
  • Slats 19x38x1830 mm in the amount of 10 pieces - necessary for creating crossbars and slats;
  • Rails 19x38x203 mm - necessary for creating racks.

Rack with shelves

Creating a rack with your own hands begins with the installation of planks, to which fasteners will be made. It starts with markings on the wall. You need to draw five horizontal lines 183 cm long on the wall. The lowest one should be at a height of 39 cm from the floor level. The distance between the others should be 41 cm. This will be a sketch of the location of future shelves for flowers.

If your garage or room is made of plasterboard, then you need to determine the location of the main profile in order to attach the entire structure to it. Use a special search engine or a simple magnet for this. Then mark the wall where the profile will intersect with the shelves.

Now cut the slats and crossbars to the required size. There will be five of them in total. Now each plank must be secured in the place where you have already placed a mark (they are mounted on a drywall profile). To secure the crossbars in the places where the slats pass, drill holes and secure the structure with self-tapping screws.

When the installation of the “skeleton” of the rack is completed, proceed to assembling the shelves. First, cut out three posts and prepare a support beam (you can remove it later). Now you need to calculate the length of the slats that will connect the edge of the shelf to the wall. This can be done using the formula a2 = b2 + c2, where a is the length of the crossbar itself, b and c are the height and width of the shelf itself. If you plan to make a rack of the same dimensions as in our example, then the rail will be 511 mm in length.

Secure the resulting rail in the place where the crossbar and the stand intersect. Use self-tapping screws for this. To increase the strength of the structure, professionals recommend additionally treating all parts with glue.

Now all that remains is to secure the shelf. For this you will also need screws and glue. Please note that when using boards, it is recommended to drill holes of a smaller diameter than self-tapping screws. This will allow you to avoid splitting the material or deforming it. Repeat the procedure for everyone and your design will be ready.

There are other types of racks. For example, a rack with side walls. Such designs resemble bookcases. They differ from ordinary racks in their greater strength and the ability to store heavier items. Also, designers often use such pieces of furniture to separate zones or in large rooms.

For a wooden rack, you will have to additionally prepare a roller or brush, a sander and a spatula - this is necessary for additional painting work.

The shelving unit with side walls is attached to a base (use boards up to 50 mm thick), which also needs to be attached to the wall. Since the walls in our houses are not always even, measurements should be taken at the bottom, top, and also in the middle of the wall.

After installing the base, begin assembling the rack. To do this, prepare the side walls, install shelves in them, and then mount the structure on the base. As a result, you will end up with a cabinet without doors.

Regular cantilever shelving is suitable for a garage, kitchen or closet as it provides open access to items stored there. with side walls it will become great solution for a living room or children's room. You can store books, souvenirs, toys or boxes of small items in it.

As you can see, making a rack with your own hands is not so difficult. It is enough to prepare all the necessary materials. If you already have experience creating such structures, please share your comments under this article.

For those who cannot come up with the most convenient and practical method for storing their own belongings, we offer universal shelving. Such products are made very quickly and easily, and are suitable for any room, be it a garage, bedroom or living room.

Having at least a little experience in repair or construction work, you can easily answer the question “how to make a rack with your own hands.”

The materials used can be found at the nearest hardware store, or even at hand. The main thing is to approach the issue of manufacturing with all your heart.

Material base

Three types of materials are perfect for today’s product: wood, metal or plastic. In addition, you can combine several bases.

It is immediately worth noting that of the proposed materials, plastic is the most difficult to process - insufficiently strong connections, spoiled appearance by cutting or drilling. Therefore, the most optimal solution is to use it with a wooden or metal structure.

In addition to the previous option, you can combine several other ideas. For example, use forged metal and plywood.

Artistic casting will look very good - the main thing is that it fits into the design idea of the room and organically combines with others decorative elements. So, sweeping forging will not fit into a minimalist style.

First of all

Before directly making a rack from boards or other base, you need to carry out preparatory work. To do this, select the location of the future product, measure the dimensions and draw a drawing of the future piece of furniture.

Immediately think about what shape the product will turn out to be - for example, simple shelves are suitable for a garage or balcony. In your living space, you can use your own imagination to create unique and practical decor.

Also, based on your needs, calculate the size of the shelves. For example, a basement rack on which jars will be stored may have a shelf of 30 centimeters. In other cases, the items being stored must be taken into account.

After this, the preparation of the material begins. For wooden products, choose a dry and planed base. It is important that the bars are intact and have the correct shape.

A rack of pipes also needs to be carefully prepared - the steel can be painted in advance if the standard color is not suitable.

One of the most important nuances– conditions for further use of the racks. Damp rooms will require additional treatment wooden frame or metal parts.

Manufacturing

When the do-it-yourself shelving diagram is ready, you can proceed directly to production process. First of all, the frame is assembled, depending on the selected material. The remaining elements are attached to the finished lower base.

Keep in mind that when creating large structures, you need to take care of additional rigidity. Add two or three spacers to the frame at the ends and wall. This way you will get a more reliable and strong element.

Just like the shelves themselves, choose the material for them yourself, based on your taste preferences.

For everyone who wants to get acquainted, we offer photos of do-it-yourself racks made from various materials. It will be easier for you to evaluate and understand what will best complement the design of your room or apartment as a whole.

Original ideas

It is not at all necessary to buy certain materials - just use old things, like a chair, cabinet and others.

Unused drawers can easily be converted into shelving units, which will be quite versatile and will not take up much space.

Those who have recently laid linoleum know that there is a cardboard tube inside the roll. Several of these products will make excellent shelves.

In appearance, this piece of furniture will resemble a honeycomb. In this case, you won’t even need drawings of the shelving; you’ll get unusually convenient furniture fittings with your own hands.

Photos of DIY shelving

The rack allows you to conveniently place various things, using free space as rationally as possible. It can be installed in the garage, on the balcony, in the pantry, personal library, office and other rooms. Figuring out how to make a shelving unit with your own hands is not at all difficult. This does not require expensive materials or hard-to-find tools. The work is done very quickly, and the resulting result will delight you with its quality for many years.

Types of self-tapping screws for making shelving.

Selection of design and dimensions

Before making a rack, you need to choose the most suitable design and determine required dimensions. The console shelving is perfect for the pantry and kitchen. Many open and very convenient shelves provide maximum visibility. It will be very easy to take out the necessary items and put them back. For a garage or balcony, you can make a rack from an inexpensive metal profile.

If you want to get an original addition to the interior, try making a rotating rack. It can be a small tabletop model or a full-fledged rotating cabinet.

Before you start making, you need to choose the appropriate sizes. If you do all the work yourself, then it is best to make the shelves from MDF or chipboard. Plywood will also work. Use boards 18-20 cm thick. Material left over from previous construction work is suitable. If your budget allows and you have a sawing machine, it is best to make a rack from durable natural wood.

Select the width of the shelves taking into account what you will store on them.

Figure 1. Rack drawing.

There is no universal solution here. To store cans and various books, it will be enough to make a rack with shelves 25-40 cm wide. If you are making shelves for various tools, take into account their dimensions.

The appropriate length of the shelves is also determined taking into account what exactly will be stored on them. If you are going to make a rack for storing various figurines, toys and other souvenirs, then the shelves can be more than one and a half meters long. In the same case, if various thick and heavy books will be stored on its shelves, it is recommended to reduce their length to 80-100 cm, otherwise they will sag.

Fastening elements are also selected taking into account the loads. A light and simple decorative rack can be assembled using self-tapping screws. If the structure will be attached to concrete wall, use self-tapping screws with a length of 89 mm. If the wall is brick, fasteners 52 mm long will be sufficient. You may need hooks and anchors to assemble and secure garage shelving and bookcases. The final choice depends on how much the rack with the items stored in it will weigh. You can make a rack based on the following drawing (Fig. 1). If necessary, change the number and size of shelves to suit your needs.

Step-by-step assembly instructions

This design looks like this - Fig. 2. In order to make a rack, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • lath 183x3.8x1.9 cm – 10 pieces, for making crossbars and planks;
  • rail 20.3x3.8x1.9 cm - 3 pieces, for racks;
  • beam 39x8.9x3.8 cm for support;
  • shelves – 18.3x30.5x1.9 cm;
  • screws;
  • dowels;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • drill.

First you need to prepare the markup. Draw a line on the wall. It should be 183 cm in length and pass at a height of 39 cm from the floor. Draw 4 more similar lines above it in increments of 41 cm.

If the walls in the room are finished with plasterboard, you will need to find a standing profile. The finished structure will be attached to it. The profile can be found using a magnet. Mark the intersections of the wall profile and future shelves. Cut 5 crossbars and 5 slats.

Figure 2. Diagram of a rack on a metal base.

Attach each strip in its designated location to the middle stud you found under the drywall. Make holes where the planks and posts intersect. Attach the strips to the posts through these holes. Also secure the 4 remaining fastening strips.

Cut out the support and 3 posts. For support, use a beam measuring 39x10x5 cm. It will be dismantled later. In order to perform cantilever installation of shelves, it is necessary to make a simple calculation. You can calculate the length of the slanting rail, due to which the overhanging edge of the shelf will be held, using the following formula: a²=b²+c². In this case, a is the length of the slats, b is the width of the shelf, c is the height between the individual shelves. In this example, the length of the oblique rail is 51.1 cm. You can see this in the following figure. 3.

Attach the rail to the support post and the crossbar that holds the outer edge of the shelf. It must be mounted at an angle of 45°. Use self-tapping screws to connect. To make the connection more durable, lubricate the parts with glue.

Secure the shelf using self-tapping screws of a suitable length and glue. If you use a board, you need to prepare the holes with a slightly smaller diameter, otherwise the canvas may split. Do the same for all remaining shelves.

You can attach ready-made consoles in the shape of triangles cut from a board to the racks. The fastening can also be made so that the shelf fits freely into the resulting triangular hole.

When there are so many things that there is nowhere to put them, the task of creating additional storage space arises, and the rack is perfect for this.

  • it’s easy to make and inexpensive;
  • you can use any materials;
  • you can think through the design so that it does not take up much space;
  • its height will allow you to use the space up to the ceiling.

The shelving is suitable for any interior and can fit anywhere in the house. The design itself implies a significant degree of freedom in the choice of material and shapes - it can be made to suit any interior, from the corridor to the living room.

Shelves made of natural eco-friendly material can be used in the nursery and kitchen. With the help of a shelving unit you can quickly bring order to any cluttered room.

The rack can also be used in the kitchen to free the kitchen table from unnecessary items.

The design of the rack is extremely simple - it is a frame on which shelves are fixed at different heights. For additional stability, it is attached to the wall.

For rational use of space, hanging shelving is suitable - the upper part of the wall is often left unoccupied, it can be used to place things.

Despite the huge volume they hold, they do not clutter up the space, maintaining a feeling of air and spaciousness, especially for shelving without back walls. To store supplies, you can choose this type of racks. They can be arranged so that the approach is from any direction. They are also suitable for a garage or storage room.

Elegant creations made of wood and chipboard with partitions, drawers and lower closed shelves will be an excellent addition to the interior of a living room, bedroom, or your own office.

The rack can be used to zone a room, and it will help maintain order. The absence of a back wall will make the division of zones weightless.

The rack can be placed on furniture wheels and, if desired, moved to change the space, or used as a static partition.

Most often, shelving is used to store books, and such a shelving can be placed anywhere, even occupying non-functional space in the hallway.

Despite the many advantages of solid bookcases, bookcases are very popular, and their low cost only reinforces their advantage.

Small shelving fits perfectly into the hallway, regardless of its size. Umbrellas, shoes, gloves and keys get their permanent places, and are in sight and at hand.

A rack installed in the kitchen significantly saves space, because you can place hanging, wall-mounted products, placing utensils on them according to the frequency of use.

In the living room, a beautifully made shelving unit can replace a bulky wall; everything from a TV to books and small items will fit on it.

If you make several shelves with doors, you will be able to arrange bottles of wine, glasses, and dishes for entertaining guests.

Development of a model for self-production

To begin with, the idea of a rack needs to be depicted in a drawing. To do this, the space allocated for it must be measured and drawn to scale on graph paper. Then the shelves are drawn, linked to actual size and taking into account what will be stored on the rack.

If heavy items, such as spare parts or tools, will be placed on it, you should not make the shelves too long so that they do not sag over time. Their length should not exceed 1 meter, and they can be additionally reinforced with a metal profile.

If the rack is installed from wall to wall, then you need to decide which design to choose:

  • a static option from wall to wall is possible, with shelves fixed directly to the walls. This solution has several disadvantages, and the gain in space is small;
  • It’s better to make an autonomous structure, then if necessary it can be moved. In this case, the drawing leaves at least 15 cm of space to the wall, maybe even a little more, so that it can be placed and, if necessary, moved.

Even if light weight items are placed on the shelves, they should not be made longer than 1.5 m, otherwise they will begin to sag.

The shelves themselves should not be too deep so that all things can be easily reached. In general, having several rows on shelves very quickly begins to tire, especially when you have to put everything out in order to find what you need. Therefore, the depth of the shelves should not exceed half a meter.

The height of the shelves is also worth thinking about separately. It can be a distance from 30-40 cm to 50-60 cm. This value depends on the dimensions of the things; you need to immediately plan what will stand and where. The height of the shelf should be at least 7-10 cm above the tallest item that will be placed on the shelf, then it will be convenient to get it out.

The simplest rack is suitable for a garage or pantry; if the product will be in the rooms, you should consider a more elegant one constructive solution– finishing, configuration, presence of decorative details.

All calculations should be schematically reflected on a scale grid in compliance with proportions. Then simply measure the dimensions of the components, make an approximate layout of the material and get to work.

Below is a diagram of the assembly of the simplest rack, the main parts of which are support frames and shelves.

Material selection

The most accessible material is wood, it is inexpensive and can be easily purchased. In addition, its processing requires minimal skills - if the rack is the first product, then making it from wood guarantees success even if there are errors.

For a simple model, you need to choose 5X5 planed timber and boards for shelves. Shelves can also be made from sheet material: chipboard, plywood.

Metal also works well, but working with metal requires some skills, for example, you will have to master drilling a hole in metal. Metal products have increased strength, durability, and are well suited for high-tech interiors. You can combine a reinforced frame with carefully crafted wooden shelves to create an elegant product.

Preparing tools

To complete the work you will need the following tools:

  • construction pencil (a regular one with a soft lead will do);
  • tape measure (preferably with millimeters, or at least with half-centimeter marks);
  • jigsaw;
  • drill (drills with a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the screws and a drill with a diameter slightly larger than the screw head);
  • a grinder with attachments or rings with different grains;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • crosshead screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • a set of skins with different grains.

You also need to buy brackets to secure the shelves or metal corners.

To process wood you need to buy special liquids, for example, with fire-bioprotective properties, stains of the desired shade, varnishes. Varnishes can be purchased immediately with the desired shade, there are also colored ones: green, blue, etc.

Preparing parts

First, you need to mark the main parts of the product on the material in accordance with the drawing, and carefully measure everything up to a millimeter.

After they are cut, they should be processed:

Polish grinder, changing nozzles from coarse and medium grain to fine. When purchasing material, it is better to choose planed boards, then the finishing work will take less time. When sanding, pay attention to the sides and especially the cuts - you need to make them smooth.

Soak the prepared parts with antiseptic or stain and dry well.

Assembling the rack

The steps to assemble a rack look something like this:

Then the parts are combined on the floor and fastened with self-tapping screws.

  • The boards must be cut to the expected length of the shelves. You can screw each one separately, you can first assemble the shelves onto cross beams (1-2), then install the already assembled shelves;
  • The installed longitudinal bars will increase the reliability of the shelves and fasten the rack frames together;
  • If the material is sheet, the task is simplified - they are cut out entirely;
  • After assembly, the product should be sanded again, processed, and painted.

Shelving options

The easiest way to acquire a new piece of furniture is to buy a prefabricated kit.

The advantages of this solution to the problem are obvious:

All parts are already professionally processed, metal parts are made of of stainless steel, galvanized or coated with anti-corrosion agents, wooden ones are also fully prepared for assembly.

Most models provide for variability in shelf heights - they can be rearranged without any additional actions.

  • Metal racks are especially durable; the plasticity of the material will allow you to create an entire system around the perimeter of the room and store items of any weight on it, from car wheels to supplies and canned goods;
  • Traditional material – wood – will never lose its relevance. Eco-friendly, durable, easy to process, allows you to realize any idea. Depending on the design, it has some restrictions on the weight of things, and is less durable than iron.

A DIY shelving unit will not only save a significant amount of money, but will also transform the space of your home. Once you try to put up your own piece of furniture and load it with things, you will want to do something else.

Even if their hands are not very skilled, they will be able to make a shelving unit after watching this video. When viewing, you should pay special attention to the processing of parts and how they are connected.
