Do-it-yourself sliding doors on rollers: we install the doors and rollers for sliding doors correctly. Do-it-yourself roller door - easy to do, convenient to use Do-it-yourself sliding interior doors

Having set out to create an unusual interior using time-tested and well-known elements, you should pay attention to sliding interior doors. By using them in the interior, you can use the space more ergonomically, dividing it into different zones and at the same time preserving the illusion of the integrity of the room. In addition, making sliding doors with your own hands is quite simple, you will need an understanding of the process and the ability to handle the tool, as well as knowledge about sliding doors.

Advantages and disadvantages of sliding doors

Before using sliding interior doors in the interior, you need to know their strengths and weaknesses. It will depend on what tasks are faced in planning the interior, whether you choose sliding doors or not.

Benefits:

  • save room space;
  • do not close under the influence of drafts, in contrast to hinged doors;
  • simple and easy door opening. The only thing that should be considered is keeping the roller mechanism clean and timely;
  • can be easily automated if necessary. This is one of the main advantages of sliding doors, which can be very easily realized with the help of modern technologies;
  • lack of thresholds. This advantage is somewhat controversial, since there are sliding door systems that have lower rails in their design, which can act as a threshold or be embedded in the floor.

Disadvantages:

  • low rates of heat and sound insulation. Systems in which a special seal is glued to the end of the door, and the doors themselves enter a special niche, have somewhat improved characteristics of sound and heat insulation;
  • impossibility of installation as an entrance door. It is worth noting that if it is a balcony, loggia or a country house with a wall of sufficient length, then sliding glass doors leading from the premises to the street can be installed;
  • the price of fittings and locks for sliding doors is an order of magnitude higher than prices for conventional doors. In addition, prices for sliding doors are also slightly higher, which imposes some restrictions on the choice according to the budget;
  • when using a certain type of sliding doors, it will not be possible to put any furniture or large household appliances nearby.

Design and types of sliding doors

There are various systems of sliding doors that differ in appearance, but the structure itself, in its essence and in terms of operation, remains unchanged. The design of sliding doors is a system consisting of roller mechanism, guides and door leaf... The roller mechanism is attached to the door, and the rollers move along the guides fixed above the doorway. Various types of sliding interior doors can include from two to four or more roller mechanisms, as well as several guides and door leaves. In addition, the design of the sliding door includes decorative panels that cover the mechanism itself, various special door fittings, platbands and accessories.

The picture below shows the different types of sliding doors:

But among all the variety, the following main types of sliding doors are distinguished:

  • sliding compartment doors;
  • cascading sliding doors;
  • sliding doors accordion;
  • one, two, three and four-leaf sliding doors;
  • radius sliding doors.

Sliding door fittings

Due to their unusual design, sliding doors require a certain type of fittings. Locks and handles for sliding doors are not the same as we are used to seeing on regular doors. A characteristic feature of the handles is that they are recessed into the door leaf. This is done so that the doors can freely move to the side and, if necessary, enter the niche allocated for it. Castles are also not quite ordinary. If you compare with the usual lock, you can see that the locking mechanism is designed for vertical snapping.

When buying a sliding door, the hardware usually comes with a door leaf. But if there is a need to install handles and locks yourself, then you need to be extremely careful and choose them correctly. Your best bet is to seek professional help or search by part number.

Sliding door mechanism

Sliding doors get their name from the opening method, which is provided by the movement of the rollers along the guides. The roller mechanism and guides for sliding doors must be selected based on the type of sliding door, the number of leaves and the material of the door leaf. The thing is that different systems have different weights and create different loads on the structure as a whole. So, if we compare a single-leaf sliding door made of MDF and a two-leaf glass sliding door, then the weight of the first will be much less, and a simpler and lighter roller mechanism can be selected for it.

Also, when installing some types of sliding doors (cascade, accordion, coupe), it is necessary to take into account the number of roller mechanisms and choose the right guides. For example, for a cascade door, you need to install 2 roller mechanisms for each door leaf and guides with two grooves. It is especially important to pay attention to the fact that in order to create compartment doors and cascade doors, it is necessary to provide one groove in the guides for each door leaf.

As noted earlier, the reliability of sliding doors is directly dependent on the roller mechanism and the guide. But sometimes, as is the case with a glass sliding door, you have to install two guides - one at the top of the doorway, the other at the bottom. This is the only way to obtain a stable and reliable door with a large door leaf mass.

Sliding door installation options

The functionality and convenience of interior sliding doors make it possible to implement various design solutions both in rooms with limited space and in rooms with a large area. Such doors allow transforming the interior space, organically fitting into the interior.

The most popular option is to install sliding doors between two living areas... Using the double-leaf type of doors, you can zone the room while maintaining its integrity. With the doors closed, these will be two different rooms, and with the doors open - one, but with a large area. For example, by installing sliding doors, you can separate a small office, and with the doors open, it will be a common room for business negotiations.

Another option for using sliding doors is to install them between living quarters and loggia, balcony or a terrace in a country house. In this case, it is advisable to use sliding glass doors. A large luminous flux will flow through them, and in the warm season, opening them, you can expand the room to infinity.

Quite often sliding doors are used for technical rooms... So, by installing sliding sliding doors, you can separate the utility room or storage room, while maintaining precious space.

Radial doors are one of the most difficult and expensive to install. It largely depends on the complexity of manufacturing the door leaf and curved guides. But such doors can be seen in showersor rooms with rounded shapes. It looks very impressive.

Unfortunately, due to their shortcomings, it does not make sense to install sliding doors between rooms such as a kitchen, living room, bathroom or toilet. Of course, with the development of technology, new materials and methods of their application appear. And it is possible that the disadvantages of sliding doors with the use of new technologies are leveled out or completely disappear, which will open up new horizons for their application.

How to make sliding doors

Having decided on the type of sliding door and purchasing everything you need, you can proceed with the installation. We will consider the installation process itself using the example of a single-leaf sliding door. This is the simplest and most common door and the easiest to install. But it should be noted that the description will also highlight key points that are typical for other types of sliding doors.

So, in order to install sliding doors with your own hands, you need to do the following:

  • The first is to mark up the guides. To do this, you can go in two ways. The first is to simply measure the height of the door from the floor with a tape measure, adding 15 - 20 mm to it for the gap between the floor and the door. And to this height add the height of the assembled roller mechanism and guide. Then put 2 - 3 marks on the wall and draw a line between them. The second option is similar to the first with the difference that the door leaf is attached to the opening, and marks are placed along the upper edge, to which the height of the roller mechanism and the guide is then added.

Important! Before installing the guide, you need to make sure that the marks are strictly horizontal. This can be done using a level. Otherwise, after installation, the doors will spontaneously open in one direction or another.

  • Now set the guide along the previously marked line so that the guide is placed under it. Depending on the guide itself, it can be fixed in different ways. Some are attached directly to the wall using dowels, some can be fixed on special brackets or wooden beams. The guide itself should be at some distance from the wall so that when the door is opened, they do not cling to the doorway or platbands. It is necessary to carefully select the guides and know how to install them. For sliding doors and other designs of sliding doors with a height from floor to ceiling, the rails are attached to the ceiling and floor.

Important! To prevent the sliding door from falling off the first time it is opened, the length of the guide should be 2 times the length of the doorway, and an additional 4 - 5 cm of reserve should be added to this length. It is because of this feature that sliding doors require a lot of free space near the doorway, although they save space when opening.

  • After fixing the guide, insert the mounting bolt inside the roller carriage and start the entire roller mechanism inside the guide. For an ordinary one-leaf door, only two rollers are required, but if we install accordion doors or cascade doors, you will have to purchase rollers for each leaf in advance.
  • On top of the door leaf we install brackets for roller carriages. They are fastened with a distance of 3 - 5 mm from the edge of the door.

Important! A different mounting method is used for glass doors. The fastener itself consists of two metal paws that clamp the glass together and tighten with screws. In addition, due to the large mass of glass, it is recommended to install doors with two guides: one in the floor, the other above the doorway.

  • Now that the rollers and fasteners for them are installed, put the door leaf in place, raise it and screw the bolts into the brackets at the top of the door. This step is best done with a partner who can lift and hold the door while the bolts are tightened. After that, we check the horizontalness of the door and, if necessary, level it by tightening the bolts.

  • The doorway and slopes can be hidden behind platbands and extensions. But we hide the roller mechanism itself behind a decorative strip, which is hung on top.
  • Finally, we install the door hardware.

The installation of a sliding door with a special niche in the wall will be somewhat more laborious. To do this, you will have to create a partition from plasterboard sheets into which the door will enter. But for doors with a guide in the floor, you will have to hollow out a groove, which will require the use of a puncher. In all other respects, installing sliding doors is very simple and easy.

In modern houses and apartments, more and more often recently, instead of not very convenient swing structures, sliding doors have been installed. They allow rational use of the space of the room, enliven the interior, and are also the most suitable option for people with disabilities. In addition, they can be installed not only in the doorway, but also in any niche. You can do this with your own hands, thus saving a significant amount, the main thing is to find time, materials and tools for such a useful and exciting process.

Necessary components

A compartment door, like any other design, consists of special elements. In order to install it, you need to purchase accessories. The choice of the necessary parts depends on the type of sliding system and the type of door leaf. The door leaf can be solid and consist of one material, or it can consist of several materials. Regardless of the materials used, any prefabricated leaf (sash) consists of profiles of different size and purpose. The frame has an upper, lower, two lateral and intermediate (the number depends on the component parts) profiles.

The upper horizontal profile consists of two slots. The lower part of the groove holds the material, and the upper one with a round groove is designed to screw in a self-tapping screw that holds the vertical profile of the door. The lower horizontal profile, like the upper one, consists of two grooves, but its lower part has longer side walls designed to hide the rollers.

The horizontal intermediate profile consists of two identical grooves. It is used as a link between materials. Vertical profiles not only perform a supporting function and have a special groove to support the material, but also required to drive the sash. This element is made in the form of a handle and has various modifications.

To drive the sash, you need a set of guides and rollers. To maintain the direction of movement of the sash, a pair of asymmetric rollers are used, installed in the upper part of the sash and located at different ends of the frame. A pair of rollers is installed in the lower part in the same way. They are the main driving force, they account for the weight of all materials used.

Sash movement is impossible without guides. As a rule, there are two of them in a set: an upper and a lower one. They differ in form and purpose. The structure of the upper profile depends on the type of system. If an upper support sliding system is used, then a closed profile consisting of one groove is used. But most often, a coupe door is used to install lower support system and therefore the shape of the profile has a slightly different look.

It consists of two grooves of the same shape and depth. Thanks to him, the door moves in a given direction. The lower guide is designed for the movement of the rollers and is a profile consisting of 3 grooves. Each pair of rollers has its own groove (narrow). The middle wide groove has a separating function.

To prevent the door from leaving when driving outside, stoppers are used. Their shape depends on the type of sliding system. These elements are installed in the guides.

Materials

There are different types of materials used in the manufacture of sliding doors. For panel types of doors, consisting of a whole sheet, one material is used. For composite (paneled), as a rule, several types of materials are used, which are placed in a frame of a certain shape. The cheapest and most affordable material is chipboard. It can be used to make a whole canvas or a frame for other materials.

Doors with chipboard details are not very suitable for installation in a children's room, since the composition contains resins that can harm health due to their volatility. Do not forget that chipboard is essentially compressed sawdust, so the edge of this material needs to be closed. Most often, chipboard is lined with PVC film or veneer.

A safer material is MDFSince no resins are used in its production, wood particles are combined thanks to paraffin or lignin. It can be used to make canvases with curly contours. Thanks to this property, it can be used both as a whole canvas and as a component of a curly frame.

Door leaves are often made from solid wood. This material is expensive and requires special skill in work. It is used as a whole canvas, and can also be used as a frame or individual panels with curly edges.

A good alternative to solid wood can be a material such as plywood. It is obtained by gluing veneer sheets, and for strength during gluing they are laid in a special way, the fibers of one sheet lie perpendicular to the fibers of the other sheet. The surface of plywood door panels is most often laminated, giving the desired color and structure to natural wood.

In contrast to wood, plywood is easier to use and is much cheaper than solid wood. Recently, a material such as polycarbonate has been used as a door leaf. Lightweight and durable polycarbonate sheets can be used as an insert in combination with other materials and as a separate sheet. This material, in order to avoid the disappearance of transparency, it is recommended to cover with profiles on all sides. It is a good alternative to glass.

Very often, a mirror and glass are used as a door leaf. The mirror surface of the doors helps to visually expand the space of the room.

It perfectly reflects both natural and artificial light, so that the darkest corners of the room are always lit. Mirror and glass, as a rule, are fixed on all sides with profiles. Both materials work well with each other.

How to calculate the dimensions yourself?

In order to make do-it-yourself sliding doors, you will need to take measurements. The width and height of the doors depends on the size of the opening in which they will be installed. The value of the optimal door width is in the range of 60-90 cm. It is possible to make doors with different widths, there is a small spread, which is in the range of 50-110 cm.

When making a door leaf, it is better to adhere to the specified limit, and there are reasons for this. Width less than 50 cm will have a negative effect on the movement of the door leaf, skewing and even falling out of the grooves is possible. An interior door with a width of 110 cm or more is very difficult to move, so this width is not used.

To calculate the required sash width, if you plan to install two sashes, you need to measure the opening and add the profile width to the resulting value, and then divide this number by the number of sashes, that is, by 2. For a specific example, it looks like this. The opening width is 1800 mm, and the width of the profile that will be used as a handle is 24 mm. We calculate: 1800 + 24/2 \u003d 912 mm.

The width of the profile and opening is chosen arbitrarily; when calculating, you should rely on your measurements and the width of the profile you have chosen. If you plan to install three leaves in the opening, then the width is calculated a little differently. The width of the profile must be added to the width of the opening, multiplied by 2 and the resulting value must be divided by 3. As a specific example, we take the same width of the opening and profile: 1800 + 24 * 2/3 \u003d 616 mm.

The sash height can be calculated as follows. We measure the height of the opening and subtract 40-45 mm from the obtained value. The length of the side profiles is equal to the height of the flaps. The length of the horizontal profiles depends on the purchased handles located on each side of the sash, or rather on their width. To calculate the length of the profiles, subtract the doubled width of the handle from the sash width, the resulting value is the length of the horizontally located profile.

Now you can start calculating the fill width. In order to make the calculations clearer, you can use the obtained values. The correct filling width is calculated as follows: 912 (616) -24 * 2 \u003d 864 (568) mm.Subtract the doubled profile width from the sash width (handles are installed on both sides of the sash).

We calculate the height of the sash in the same way, namely, subtract the width of the upper and then the lower profile from the height value, and as a result we get the required number. This height calculation is suitable if the canvas is solid and does not require seals. If seals are used, then the doubled width of the seal is subtracted from the obtained value, since it is located both at the top and bottom of the canvas.

As a rule, a silicone rubber is used as a seal, its thickness is 1 mm, and the doubled value, respectively, is 2 mm. This calculation can be visualized as follows: height 2500-10-38-2 \u003d 2450 mm. Where 10 is the width of the upper profile and 38 is the width of the lower profile.

If the door is manufactured from component parts, the thickness of the intermediate profile must be taken into account. How many profiles - so many values \u200b\u200bhave to be taken into account.

How to do it yourself at home?

Making compartment doors with your own hands is a rather laborious process, but nothing is impossible, the main thing is to take into account some details.

Rectangular sliding doors

First of all, you need to decide on the filling of the door. The easiest way is to work with chipboard panels and plywood, but you can also choose a solid wood, an MDF board (preferably with an untreated surface). It is easier to buy a ready-made canvas of the required size, but you can do it yourself. To do this, it is necessary to prepare tools that will be required in the future when installing the assembled structure and some additional materials.

You will need:drill, end saw, sander or sandpaper, special surface coating film and varnish (for wood).

First, the prepared material is cut to the required size, and the ends are ground. The MDF board is coated with a film or veneer. Then holes for the handles are cut out in it, as well as the attachment points for the roller mechanism are prepared. The surface is cleaned of dust contamination. The wooden sheet is treated with an impregnation that prevents rotting processes, and then covered with a layer of varnish.

To lighten the door leaf, you can cut holes in the workpiece in the form of a rectangle or square. Insert a suitable size blank of glass, mirror or lighter plywood into them. First, a figure is drawn on the canvas, and then the middle is cut out with a jigsaw. This must be done carefully, starting from the corner of the marked figure.

The ends of the hole formed are processed with a special tape, which is fixed on the material with an iron. Selected inserts are held with a glazing bead. You can assemble the door leaf from profiles and different materials. It is necessary to purchase ready-made profiles and materials for insertion, which are assembled in a certain order.

All profiles are cut according to pre-calculated sizes strictly at an angle of 90C.

Through vertical profiles, handles need to make through holes. In the upper part, to fix the upper roller, 2 holes are drilled, deviating from the edge of 7 mm, the diameter of one is larger than the diameter of the other.

This is done so that the self-tapping screw easily passes through a larger hole and is fixed in the lower part. Then 4 holes are drilled. The first pair of holes is made after indentation of 7 mm, and the second after indentation from the edge of 42 mm. Now you can start assembling all the fillings. On the glass and mirror inserts around the perimeter wears a silicone sealant without overlap. On the back of the mirrors you need to stick a film on the mirrors. Prepared components are inserted into profiles.

For a strong fit of the material, when connecting the inserts with profiles, use a rubber mallet. We attach vertical handle profiles to the assembled web and fasten the structure with fasteners. First we twist in the upper part, for this we take the roller and fix it with the screw in the vertical profile.

In the lower part, we first fix the profile through the far hole, twisting it all the way, and then attach the lower rollers to the profile. To do this, insert the plate with the roller inside the lower profile and slide it to the upright post.

There is a hole in the roller plate, it must be combined with the hole in the vertical profile and screwed using a hexagon while pressing the roller. The door leaf is ready for installation.

Radius Sliding Doors

It is much more difficult to make radius sliding doors than ordinary rectangular doors. Unlike ordinary doors, they have smooth corners. The canvas can be of various shapes and curvatures. For movement on the surface, an aluminum profile is used. Door leafs can be made of tempered glass, plastic and other materials. It will not be possible to make such a sheet at home, so it is better to order ready-made doors and all components for them.

Step-by-step instruction

You can install compartment doors anywhere. Most often, with their help, a wardrobe is equipped. It must be remembered that the installation of the structure must be carried out after repair. After collecting the door leaves, you can install the rails. You need to start with the top guide. It is usually mounted on a mortgage beam or directly on the ceiling. The guide should be located at least 10 cm from the shelves.

To install the lower guide, you need a laser level or plumb, but you can do without them. We lay the lower profile on the surface without fixing and start the door leaf first in the upper guide, and then in the lower profile, after installing the stoppers in it. After fixing the canvas in a strictly vertical position, you can screw the bottom profile. Now you can insert the second canvas. On both wings we glue a strip in the sides to soften the blows. Doors are ready to go.

There is so little space in a small apartment that even an opening door of an interior door creates inconvenience. Partially help to solve the problem, but the cloth leaving the partition prevents the installation of furniture. The best option is the cassette design, which provides for the rollback of the sliding door to the wall due to the pencil case.

According to the principle of operation, cassette interior doors are no different from designs that provide for the rollback of the sash behind the wall. The mechanism is rollers and guide rails. The main difference is the ability to hide the door leaf inside the wall. This design is called a cassette or pencil case. It is made in the form of a flat box, replacing part of the wall. In addition to the sash, guide rails and a roller system are hidden inside the cassette.

Benefit from a case for sliding doors - this is the creation of free space inside the wall, the leaf sliding into the cassette does not interfere with the installation of furniture close to the interior partition. A pencil case protects the door leaf from contamination, scratching by pets and other damages.

For normal operation of the sliding door, a wall thickness corresponding to the parameters of the cassette is required. The design should form a niche that does not protrude beyond the plane of the wall. In the sliding system, the thickness of the casement and side racks of the pencil case, as well as the gaps between the elements for the free movement of the canvas, are taken into account. The width of the cassette is always made twice as large as the doorway. The half intended for rollback of a cloth, hides behind a false wall from gypsum cardboard.

Varieties and features

All are the same in design. May vary dimensions, material, execution of rollers and guide rails. They adhere to standards in terms of size, which means a canvas height of 1.9–2 m and a width of 0.6 to 1 m. On large openings, built-in double compartment doors are installed in the wall. If you need to move away from the standards, the cassette is made of the right sizes to order.

Factory design supplied in its entirety. The pencil case is already complex and ready to install. With self-production, the cassette is assembled from a thick board, timber, galvanized profile. Door leaf fit any suitable size.

Of the additional devices most often equip the system closer. The mechanism creates a smooth closing of the sash. For complete convenience, a sliding interior door hidden in the wall is equipped with automation. The canvas opens when a person approaches, and closes after it passes through the doorway. Automation is triggered by sensor signals. The canvas moves the electric motor.

Automation is rarely installed in residential premises due to cost and inappropriate. Autonomous systems are in demand in stores and other buildings where a large flow of people passes per day.

Main advantages and disadvantages

Having decided to install a sliding door in a pencil case, you need to weigh all the pros and cons of the design. Advantage the following factors can be considered:

  • Save space. The absence of a swing wing eliminates the formation of a dead zone. Furniture can be placed close to the wall and it will not interfere with the opening of the canvas.
  • The likelihood of injury is reduced. A person walking in the dark sometimes hits the end of an open swing wing. Sensations are unpleasant, and sometimes dangerous. On the end of the sliding sheet, with all the desire, it will not work.
  • Increase in term of operation. Due to the rollers, the severity of the door leaf is evenly distributed across the jumpers of the frame. The box becomes more resistant to loosening and does not warp. The canvas hidden inside the pencil case is protected from pets and it will not be smeared by children.
  • Sliding design visually expands the space, creates a zoning effect, emphasizes the modern style in the interior.

Disadvantage is high cost. High-quality roller mechanism is expensive. Additionally, the costs of the purchase or manufacture of a pencil case are taken into account. It is difficult to install a cassette for a sliding door on its own. In the absence of experience will have to hire specialists.

One more minus is an sound reduction. Below and above the end of the door leaf, a gap is obtained. Providing silence in the room will not work. Additionally, odors will penetrate the gaps from the kitchen. The problem will have to be solved by installing a powerful hood.

Do-it-yourself cassette door installation

Before proceeding with the manufacture of a case for a sliding door, determine the width of the opening. The design of the entire system will depend on this parameter. Cassette coupes come in two types:

  • Single leaf. Door blocks are designed for standard narrow aisles in the bedroom, kitchen,.
  • Bivalve. Door blocks are designed for wide walkways. Often such openings are arranged in the living room or when combining rooms. The design consists of two separate cassettes mounted on opposite sides of the aisle. The combined single-leaf systems are obtained, where each leaf is rolled back in the opposite direction.

When making a case for sliding doors with your own hands, take into account the type of wall. The usual non-bearing interior partition is completely dismantled. In its place, a structure with a niche is being erected. A sliding door with a drywall partition forms a false wall, which is a cassette. The construction of a new wall allows you to save usable area due to the preservation of the original thickness.

Do not dismantle. The frame of the pencil case will have to be fixed to the surface, and sheathed with plasterboard on top. You get a double thickening of the wall and a decrease in space, but there is no other way.

Install the cassette door of the compartment after arranging the final floor. By this time, the finish leveling should be carried out, as well as the thickness of the floor covering.

Installation procedure

They try to roll the hinged door on casters. The movement should be smooth, easy, without rumble and jumps. It is important not to forget about the limiters that serve as the focus of the rolling sash.

After a successful test of the sliding structure, the niche frame is sheathed with sheets of drywall. Further actions are directed to the decorative decoration of the false wall and the framing of the ends of the cassette forming the door frame.

If you set out to create an unusual design in your apartment, using components already tested, reliable and well-known to you, then be sure to pay attention to the sliding doors of the interior type. Using them in the interior, you can achieve a more ergonomic placement of interior elements in the apartment space, dividing it into various zones. In doing so, you will preserve the integrity of the premises.

Moreover, to make sliding doors with your own hands will not be difficult. All that is needed is an understanding of the process, little skills in handling building tools, and some knowledge about construction.

Before using interior designs in the interior, you need to know their strengths and weaknesses. Depending on the goals pursued by you during the planning of the design, it will be rational to choose a specific type.

Advantages:

  • space saving;
  • unlike swing structures on hinges, sliding ones do not close under the influence of drafts;
  • the sashes are quite simple and easy to open.

The only feature that must be taken into account is the timely maintenance of the roller mechanisms, as well as the observance of cleanliness and order in the room to avoid dust and dirt getting on the functional elements. One of the unique features of these interior elements is the absence of thresholds. This advantage is controversial, because the sliding complex has lower guides acting as a threshold in its design.

In a well-insulated loggia, you can use interior doors with an upper sliding mechanism, which almost never clogs and contributes to an easier and quieter movement.

Disadvantages:

  • low sound and heat insulation (increased heat and sound insulation qualities are included in complexes that are equipped with a special seal at the end; the doors themselves enter a special niche);
  • you will not be able to set this door as an entrance door (on the other hand, a door of such a plan will not look like an entrance door, but it is most suitable as an interior solution);
  • the cost of locks and accessories is several times higher than for standard options; such designs are more expensive;
  • installation of any furniture or large-sized household appliances near the opening is impossible.

It should be noted that, in the case of a private house in which there is a wall of sufficient length, it is possible to make glass sliding doors that lead from the premises to the street.

Building and types

There are a large number of diverse systems that differ in appearance, but their operating principle has been and remains unchanged. The structure of these structures is a complex that consists of a roller mechanism, web and guides. The roller mechanism is attached to the janus, and the rollers move along the guides mounted above the opening. A variety of types of sliding interior Janus can have four or more roller mechanisms. In addition, they may include several guides and canvases. Moreover, the design of the sliding type includes decorative panels that cover the mechanism, platbands, extensions, special fittings.

Among these elements, the following main types can be distinguished:

  • compartment;
  • cascading;
  • single, four-leaved;
  • radius
  • "harmonic".

Hardware

Due to their unique design, sliding tailors require only a strictly defined type of hardware. Handles and locks for such layout decisions are very different from standard ones. A characteristic feature of the handles is that they are recessed into the canvas. This is done so that the doors can move to the side without any problems and, if necessary, call into a designated niche. The castles, in turn, are also curious. If you compare them with standard locks that everyone is used to seeing on a variety of doors, you can see that their mechanism is designed for vertical locking.

Hardware usually comes complete with a canvas. However, if there is a need to mount locks and handles with your own hands, then you should pay great attention and carefully select them. The best option would be to contact a specialist so that the latter can assist you or search through the catalog number.

Mechanism

Sliding doors were named so because of the opening method used, which is ensured by the movement of the rollers along the guides. The guides and the roller mechanism must be selected based on the type of sliding structure, the number of flaps and the material of the web. The fact is that different systems have a variety of weights and create different loads on the overall design. Thus, if we compare a single-wing design of a sliding type made of MDF and a double-wing glass sliding, then in the first case the weight will be much less and a less complex mechanism of a roller type can be selected for it.

In addition, during the installation of specific types of sliding structures (accordion, coupe, cascade), you need to take into account the number of roller mechanisms and choose the right guides. For example, for a cascade opening, it is necessary to install guides with two grooves and 2 roller mechanisms for each blade. It is also important that to create cascading doors and compartments, it is imperative to provide at least one gutter in the guides for each leaf.

Convenience and functionality of this type makes it possible to implement a variety of design solutions, both in rooms with large square meters, and in those that have limited space. Such doors make it possible to modify the interior space and organically fit into the interior.

DIY installation

After you decide on the type of sliding door and get everything you need, you can safely proceed with the installation. In this case, the installation will be considered as an example of a single-leaf sliding type door. This is a fairly common and simple door that is easy to install. However, it is necessary to note that there are some nuances characteristic of other species.

First you need to take the following steps:

Make markings for installing the guides. There are two ways to do this. The first is simply to measure the height from the floor to the door with a tape measure and add 15-20 mm to it to determine the gap between the door and the floor. Then add measurements of the guide and the roller mechanism to this height. Then you need to put 2-3 marks on the wall and draw a horizontal line between them. The second option implies a certain similarity with the first, however, in this case, the canvas is attached to the opening and the marks are placed on the upper edge. After they need to add the height of the guide and the roller mechanism.

Remember! Before installing the guide, you must make sure that the labels are in a strictly horizontal position (use a level for this). Otherwise, after installation, the doors will open without your participation in any direction.

Guide Installation

Now it is necessary to install the guide along the already outlined line so that it is mounted strictly under it. Depending on the type of rail, it can be fixed in different ways. Specific types can be attached directly to the wall using dowels, while others can be mounted on wooden beams or special brackets. Actually, the guide should be placed at a certain distance from the wall, so that during the opening of the door did not touch the platband and the doorway. You need to carefully select the guides and know how to make the installation correctly. Sliding doors and other designs of sliding doors, which have a height from floor to ceiling, provide for mounting rails to the floor and ceiling.

Remember! In order to prevent breakage of the door at the first opening, it is necessary to calculate the length of the guide 2 times the opening. To this length you need to add 4-5 cm extra stroke. Due to this feature, such doors require a lot of free space directly near the opening.

After you fasten the guide, you need to insert the fixing bolt inside the roller carriage and insert the entire roller mechanism inside the guide. For a conventional single-leaf design, only two rollers are needed, however, if you plan to install an "accordion" or a cascade mechanism, you will need to buy rollers for each of the leaves in advance.

Mount the brackets for the roller carriages at the top of the web. They need to be fixed with an indent from the door edge of 3-5 mm.

Glass constructions

Remember! For such structures, a completely different type of fastener is used. Actually, the fasteners are two steel legs that clamp the glass together and are pulled together by screws. Moreover, due to the large weight of the glass, the Janus are advised to mount using two guides (both in the floor and above the doorway).

After you install the fasteners and rollers, put the blade in place, lift it and screw the bolts into the brackets at the top of the doors. This stage of work is best performed with a partner, who from time to time will lift and hold the door in the process of tightening the bolts. After this operation, check the horizontal position of the structure (if necessary, align it by tightening the bolts).

The aperture and slopes can be hidden behind the extensions and platbands, and a decorative bar is hung over the roller mechanism.

Mount the hardware to complete the installation. Installing a door with a special niche in the wall will be more difficult. In order to accomplish this, it is necessary to create a partition from plasterboard sheets, where the door will call. For doors with a guide in the floor, it is necessary to hollow out the groove. This will require a hammer drill. Otherwise, installation is a fairly simple and easy process.

When choosing interior doors, most consumers strive to combine aesthetics and functionality, affordable cost and small requirements for occupied space in these designs. These are the characteristics of roller doors. Such structures are capable of shifting to the side in a vertical plane, saving space as much as possible when opening.

Advantages and disadvantages of the sliding system

The design of interior doors on casters is quite straightforward. The door leaf in the process of opening moves parallel to the partition along a special guide. There can be two - one at the top, the other at the bottom. In addition, there are models whose design includes only the upper guide. At the same time, sliding doors are divided into single and double doors. These interior structures on casters move along the rails thanks to the suspensions for the wheels.

The advantages of doors of this kind are obvious. Among them, we can distinguish space saving indoors. When opening the door leaf does not require additional space. This means that there is no need to provide additional free space near the door leaf. Another advantage of such doors is the ability to mount directly in the doorway, above the opening and on the ceiling. The door frame in such designs is absent as unnecessary. By the way, it will be said that installing and fixing in the perfectly correct position is the most responsible and difficult step when installing sliding doors.

Another advantage of such designs is the lack of a threshold when using suspended roller systems. With this configuration, the presence of the lower guide becomes redundant, which makes it possible not to expose the flooring to additional effects. It is also worth emphasizing that from an aesthetic point of view, sliding doors look more elegant than their swinging counterparts.

At the same time, thanks to the wide range of materials used, it is possible to choose a sliding structure for any room interior. In addition, it should be noted that such doors open and close almost silently, while eliminating strong impacts on partitions. Such features increase the service life of sliding doors relative to swing structures.

Among the drawbacks of doors on casters, lower sound and thermal insulation indicators can be distinguished than for swing structures. In addition, the opening sash or sash takes up additional space at the opening, which should be considered when choosing and arranging furniture.

Interior doors in the interior

Sliding doors on casters can be made in different versions, which is important for the interior of the rooms in which they are used. If we are talking about execution, when the door is installed on the doorway, then in such cases the structure is fixed on the outside of the room. In this case, special attention should be paid to the design of the doorway from the opposite side.

In addition, there are cassette interior doors that also move on casters as in the photo below. This design has a kind of metal case, which is hidden inside the wall. When opening such an interior design, one or two wings are hidden in a false wall.

There are currently two ways to attach sliding doors. The first option is a hinged system, which moves only along the lower guide. In this case, the function of the upper guide is to support the sash in a strictly vertical position. Such doors on casters are the most common option.

In the second embodiment, the suspended leaf moves only along the upper guide, and the lower rail in the structure is completely absent. By the way, it will be noted that the soundproof characteristics of the sliding door on the suspended type rollers are lower than that of the hinged system. This is due to the presence of an additional gap between the floor covering and the door leaf, which is clearly visible in the photo of such installed models.

Materials and Design

In the manufacture of sliding doors often use the same materials as in the manufacture of swing. Doors made of solid wood and natural veneer are very popular. It is safe to say that these materials are the most popular in the manufacture of sliding doors. This is not surprising, because only a natural tree is able to give the interior of a room a unique aura of comfort and nobility, which is an integral attribute of classical solutions.

In addition, sliding doors made of MDF panels are widely used. Glass elements are also used for decoration. In this case, glass is used in a variety of shapes and textures. It can be frosted glass, painting, silk-screen printing. Using these inserts, you can get very original solutions for sliding interior doors. For example, sash made of wood with a soft pattern on the glass fit perfectly into the interiors, made in the Mediterranean style.

For design solutions, techno, hi-tech or minimalism, roller glass interior doors are suitable. At the same time, such doors can be frame or solid. Along with the listed materials, often used fabric and leather or glass, processed in a special way. In addition, the use of artificial stone is often. In most cases, for such non-standard solutions, aluminum or steel frames are preferred.

DIY installation

The main and, perhaps, the only requirement for the place of installation of doors on rollers is the presence of smooth walls along which the opening and closing partitions will move. If the design provides for the lower guide, then it is fixed on the floor. The length of this element is chosen equal to two values \u200b\u200bof the width of the door leaf and plus 50 mm on one side of the opening.

A roller system is mounted on the door leaf, which is necessary for the functioning of this type of sliding door, and the door itself is fixed in the lower guide. After this, it is necessary to make markings to fix the upper guide. For the correct and reliable installation of the top rail, use a wooden beam with a cross section of 40 x 40 mm. After fixing on the beam, it, together with the profile, is fixed to the wall according to the markings made earlier. Then you should install the latches, which will limit the free movement of the wings.

At the next stage of door assembly on the rollers, do-it-yourself shutters are inserted into the upper guide and lifted so that their lower part can be inserted into the lower guide. Now, with the adjustment screws, it is necessary to adjust the position of the leaves (or leaves). The position of these elements should be vertical and checked using the building level. On this installation of interior doors on casters can be considered complete.

Care and maintenance

In order for the sliding doors to last for a long time, it is necessary to care for them and observe several key rules for their operation. Firstly, excessive moisture should be avoided on the door leaf. Otherwise, the design may "lead". This recommendation applies primarily to wooden paintings. Secondly, you need to regularly monitor the condition of the guides. Do not operate doors on casters in the presence of debris in the rails. This can lead to difficulties in the process of closing and opening the door leaf, as well as to premature failure of the system.

In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that the technically competent installation of sliding interior doors on casters, proper maintenance of the structure and timely replacement of fittings can become a guarantee of continuous operation of the entire structure.

Sash should be pushed smoothly and without significant effort. This will extend the life of the roller mechanisms. In the most deplorable case, with a strong and energetic opening of the door, the latch can fly off, which will lead to the "flight" of the sash out of the rails. In addition, it is recommended to periodically check the condition and functionality of the hardware. It will be much cheaper and faster to change the roller mechanisms in a timely manner than to change or repair the guides later. By the way, it will be noted that when cleaning and cleaning roller systems, it is better to use specialized cleaning products. Then the doors on the rollers will last longer and retain their attractive appearance.
