How to properly install fans in a computer case

The device of a computer is quite complex - it consists of many blocks, each of which generates a lot of heat. Overheating of any of them can lead, at best, to improper operation and emergency shutdown of the computer, at worst, to failure. The processor, video card, north and south bridge chips on the motherboard are especially hot. But other nodes also heat up - for example, a hard drive heats up quite noticeably during active work. Therefore, the computer needs cooling.

How to install fans in a computer case.

The most common and cheapest cooling system used in computers is air, which works with the help of special fans. For better heat dissipation and an increase in the heat-removing surface, metal radiators are placed on the most important parts. They remove a lot of heat, but their area is limited, so fans are additionally used. For example, it is on the main processor, in addition to the heatsink, as it is one of the most important and hottest microcircuits. For the best effect, at least one additional cooler should be installed in the system unit, which will create constant air circulation and bring hot air out. In most computers, especially in the minimum configuration - the so-called office version, no additional cooling is installed. However, in such models there is still one cooler - in the power supply, which is located at the top of the computer. Warm air, rising up from the motherboard and additional devices, is blown out with its help. But this design has disadvantages:

  • All the warm air goes through the power supply, which itself is not weakly heated, which makes its parts overheat even faster. Therefore, it fails most often.
  • A reduced pressure is created in the computer case, and to equalize it, air enters from anywhere - through all the cracks. Therefore, a lot of dust quickly accumulates inside, further worsening heat dissipation.
  • The flow created is not very stable, again, due to its influx from all possible openings. Unnecessary and harmful turbulence is created, greatly reducing the efficiency of the entire system.
  • The airflow is not very strong, for low-lying devices, such as a video card, is clearly insufficient.

Therefore, it is required to install additional coolers in the system unit. They are inexpensive and you can install them yourself.

How to install fans in a computer case

Installation of coolers in the system unit is carried out according to different schemes. Before starting work, you must definitely familiarize yourself with them, since the incorrect location of these nodes can do even more harm than their absence. Typically, the motherboard has a couple of connectors for cooling. You can use both or just one. The schemes for installing fans in the computer case will then be as follows:

  1. On the back wall at the top, opposite the processor.
  2. On the front wall.
  3. The use of two fans - front and rear.

You can choose any of these options, but the last one is the most preferred. Note that the use of only one cooler in one way or another upsets the air balance in a closed system. Therefore, we will consider each option separately.

The fan installed at the back should work for blowing, that is, to bring warm air out. At the same time, the warm air flow no longer goes through the power supply and does not cause it to overheat. In addition, the cooling of the processor is improved. This option has a drawback - rarefaction is created in the case, and the flow of air through various holes in the case brings with it a lot of dust. However, the use of such a scheme still significantly improves the situation.

This fan should be located at the bottom, preferably opposite the hard drive, and work for blowing. It not only directly cools the hard drive, but also helps to equalize the pressure inside the case. The flow naturally goes from bottom to top, flowing around all important nodes and blown out from above when heated.

double option

Installing a couple of fans in a computer case is the best option. One of them should stand under the power supply on the back wall and work for blowing. The second one is frontal, installed on the front wall, and works for blowing. This is the most correct arrangement of coolers in the system unit, as it creates a good airflow past all nodes. A big plus - the balance of internal pressure does not allow dust to accumulate inside the case. But everything will work perfectly only if a couple of rules are observed:

  • It is better to choose the maximum size of the fans for the installation site - if a 140 mm model can be installed there, then install it, otherwise stop at the 120 mm version.
  • You need to control where the fan in the computer case should blow. Front - for blowing, rear - for blowing. Otherwise, internal pressure and air circulation will be disturbed, and the result will be more harm than good.

The main mistakes when installing cooling

It is important to know how to properly install coolers in the system unit. An improperly functioning cooling system can be inefficient, or, conversely, create conditions for rapid overheating. The most important thing here is in which direction the case cooler blows.

  • Installed only rear fan, working on the "blowing". At the same time, the warm air leaving the power supply unit is immediately supplied again inside and moves in the same circle outward. In the lower part of the housing, circulation is not created at all, and everything heats up there.
  • Only the front fan is installed, which works on "blowing". This will create a reduced pressure in the housing, and a lot of dust will quickly accumulate. Heat dissipation will not occur, so everything will overheat, and the computer will constantly keep the coolers at maximum speed, so there will also be much more noise.
  • The rear cooler blows in air, while the front cooler blows it out. This is not normal, if only because warm air rises, and its flow cannot be directed downward. Therefore, the effect will be the same as in the previous paragraph.
  • Both coolers are blown inside. Excessive pressure is created in the case, the fans work for wear, but, of course, there is no benefit.
  • Both coolers blow out. This is the most dangerous situation, as low pressure is created in the case, air circulation is disturbed, and all computer components overheat very quickly.

As you can see, it is very important which side the cooler is installed on. It is necessary to turn it over, and it will start blowing in the wrong direction. So this should always be checked. Proper installation of fans in the PC case - the top rear fan should blow air, and the bottom front fan should blow in. Then its circulation will be natural and correct, and the cooling system will work as efficiently as possible. Now you know how to properly install cooling coolers in the system unit. If you installed them yourself, check their work. If you are going to do this, do it right away.
