Solving the problem with the disappearance of sound

Hello to everyone who reads my blog regularly or visited it for the first time. Can you hear me? Correctly and should not be heard, because you are not listening to a podcast, but reading an article. It's another matter if, after turning on the music, launching a movie or your favorite game, you will not hear anything, although everything else indicates that the application is working normally. In this situation, my article will come in handy. After all, it will focus on what to do if the sound on the computer disappears. If you have lost sound on your laptop, then this article also applies to these devices. There is no difference.

The disappearance of sound can be caused by several reasons, ranging from the most commonplace, to those that indicate that you cannot do without a visit to the service center. Let's start dealing with them in order.

Sound is lost due to computer settings

Quite often, the absence of sound is associated with one's own inattention or forgetfulness. You could just turn it off and lose sight of it. Pay attention to the lower right corner of the screen, where the clock and icons of programs located in the system tray are displayed.

Note: if there is no tray icon, then go to the article: "" and solve this issue.

Do you have a red icon on your speaker meter to indicate that the sound is muted?

If not, then open the soundbar and see at what level the volume control is located.

It may well turn out that the sound is on, but at a minimum level. If so, then just set the required volume.

It is also worth checking the physical connection of the speakers to the sound card (located on the back of the computer) and whether they are connected to the network, just in case. If you have lost sound on your laptop, then you can find these connectors on the left or right (very rarely, when in the back).

For a more detailed description of the sound card, read: "". If everything is fine, but there is still no sound, restart the computer and move on to more complex reasons.

No sound after installing programs or due to driver failure

If, after viewing and changing the settings in Windows, you still cannot understand where the sound on the computer disappeared and what to do next, you do not understand, then I give one more tip that you can use.

Another common reason for a sound card to stop working. Each program that is installed on a computer requires certain resources for its work. Therefore, after installing a new application, it may well turn out that it conflicts with existing ones.

As a result, some elements of the operating system cease to function normally, in particular the audio system. This happens especially often after installing the same type of programs. For example, the installation of several anti-virus programs at the same time is generally not recommended, as it can lead to a complete failure of the operating system. If the sound disappears after installing the applications, try uninstalling them.

If such measures did not help, it is possible that your sound card drivers stopped working. Such a situation in IT slang is also called “drivers have flown”. You can check this as follows. Go to "Start" - "Control Panel" and open "Device Manager".

You need the Sound, Video and Game Controllers tab. If the drivers are damaged or are missing for some reason, then you will immediately notice warning icons in the form of yellow question marks or exclamation marks.

In this case, you need to reinstall the drivers. This can be done using the CD that comes with any computer. If you have a separate sound card, then you need a disk for it. If it is integrated, and this is the most common option, then the drivers for the sound card are located on the disk to the motherboard.

I remind you that all the methods described in this article help to solve the problem not only in the computer, but similarly all actions are used when you have lost sound on your laptop and what to do with this problem, we will understand further.

It is possible that the driver disk is missing. You shouldn't get upset too much, since the most common drivers can be downloaded from the Internet. Moreover, there are a lot of sites that offer driver downloads.

In order to save yourself the trouble of diving into technical details, I recommend that you completely reinstall your audio drivers. Usually, in the disc menu or in a file downloaded from the Internet, it is activated by the "Install audio driver" item or a similar item.

BIOS settings

If none of the above helped, and there is still no sound on the computer, check to see if it is disabled in the BIOS. It is loaded before the main operating system starts up.

Depending on which program you have installed, you can get into it using one of the Del, F2, F10 or F12 keys. You must press them immediately after turning on the computer.

In the BIOS, you will need the "Devices Configuration" menu item and the "High Definition Audio" sub-item. Check that the switch opposite to it is in the "Enabled" position.

Sound is lost due to disabled Windows Audio service

Make sure the Windows Audio service is enabled on your computer. To do this, click "Start" - "Control Panel" - "Administrative Tools" - "Services". Also, the "Services" window can be opened as follows "Start" - select "Run", enter "services.msc". After that click on the "OK" button.

Now find the inscription "Windows Audio" and see that the service was started and worked in "Auto" mode, in Windows 7 "Automatic".

If this service is "Stopped", then right-click on it and select "Properties".
In the "Startup type:" select "Auto", click on the "Run" button, this field on the "Apply" and "OK" buttons.

Additional Information

If a program for a sound card is installed on your computer, then it does not forget to look at what settings are set for the sound in it.

I have listed all the most common reasons when you do not know why the sound on the computer disappeared. If, after all the measures taken, he did not appear, I can only sympathize. Chances are good that you have a problem with your sound card. In this case, the best option would be to replace the sound card (they are inexpensive) or contact a service center.

And one more small nuance, which is often forgotten. If the computer is under warranty service and there is a suspicion that the sound card has burned out, do not rush to open your case. This is a common reason for a service center to refuse service.

That's all for today. I wish you that you never again think about what to do if the sound disappears on the computer, but you always hear it. Subscribe to the mailing list of my blog, because there are still many interesting and useful articles ahead.
