Are essential oils good for you? Essential oils: useful properties and contraindications, how to use

The wave of everything artificial is gradually fading away, and the fashion for natural is returning to replace. Nature has everything that is necessary for humanity, including women, to maintain their beauty. Oils play a significant role in maintaining and restoring natural beauty. We will talk about how to use them correctly, which ones and for what purpose - we will talk in this article.

The benefits of essential oils

In addition to aesthetic and healing properties, essential oils have a beneficial effect on the nervous system. Therefore, it is very important when choosing ingredients to choose what you really like. If you are disgusted with the product used, then it will not be useful.

Esters are used everywhere: for taking baths, both relaxing and therapeutic, they make foot baths with them, they take care of the body. Each of the oils is suitable for a specific application, for example:

 • anise oil boosts mood, arousing mild arousal;
 • basil is a natural antistress, it gives strength and wonderfully refreshes;
 • laurel has a relaxing effect on the body - it is part of many perfumes;
 • bergamot helps with, increases self-esteem;
 • cardamom - very popular in the perfume industry, like the previous version, it soothes well;
 • rosemary is beneficial in the treatment of dark hair;
 • sandalwood is an excellent care product, it tightens enlarged pores well;
 • mint - actively fights acne and acne, perfectly cleanses the skin;
 • orange is the real enemy of cellulite.

But you need to be careful with them, since they do not always benefit from them. In some cases, essential oils can be harmful. For example:

 • during lactation, mothers should avoid contact with jasmine, mint, parsley and sage oils - scientists have proven that they can reduce the level of milk production;
 • high blood pressure is a contraindication to the use of rose oil, eucalyptus, cypress, sage;
 • and when low, you should beware of marjoram, ylang-ylang, lavender, nutmeg;
 • with epilepsy, wormwood, fennel, hyssop, sage are dangerous;
 • when contraindicated mint, rose, cypress, cinnamon, myrrh, thyme, oregano.

It is also important to remember that essential oils should never be used in their pure form. Otherwise, there is a huge risk of severe burns. Dilute oils before use in the same greasy environment. For this, it is customary to use oils marked "base". These include: olive, peach, almond, grape, linseed, etc. Find the best option that suits your skin type and use it as directed.

Essential oils: application

As we mentioned earlier, essential oils have a wide range of uses. Let's look at an example where and how each of them can be applied.

Essential oils for face

For the face, the essential oil without reducing the concentration can only be used if a point application is required, for example, when. But even in this case, it must be done with caution.

Esters have an excellent ability to penetrate into the deepest layers of the skin and act from within. That is why oils are advised to be added to a store cream in order to enhance its effectiveness.

Even diluting the essential oil with the base oil, you need to apply the composition with caution to make sure that it is absent. Study each drug thoroughly, since some of them have contraindications for sunlight. As the skin may become irritated and burned.

 • Patchouli oil works well with all skin types, but it is especially harmonious with dry, loose and oily. It nourishes the skin, eliminates flaking and promotes skin regeneration. Great in caring for aging skin as it can. Evens out the complexion and makes it healthy. For daily care, you can add a couple of drops to a regular cream. Pointwise, in its pure form, they can treat acne and acne.
 • Orange oil (sweet) - Suitable for dry skin types. Ether removes dead epidermis, smoothes and moisturizes the skin. The oil replenishes collagen deficiencies, making it an excellent anti-aging oil. Oily skin, under the influence of orange essential oil, gets rid of excess oil, acne, abscesses and enlarged pores. For facials, simply add 2-4 drops to masks, creams and other skincare products.
 • Lemon oil can help whiten pigmented areas of the skin. When mixed with grape seed oil, it is ideal for treating oily skin. To slow down the aging process, lemon is mixed with avocado oil or castor oil. For young skin, lemon oil is an effective prevention of wrinkles. With spot application, with undiluted oil, warts are treated.

Essential oils for body

The easiest way to use aromatic body oils is with aroma baths. They help to relax, make the skin perfectly smooth. The following bath recipes can be used as a remedy to fight cellulite.

 • Put a couple of drops of estuary, 4 drops of rosemary and 6 drops of thyme into a glass of kefir. Mix everything well and pour into a bath, the water temperature of which is 37-38 ° C. The duration of the procedure is 20 minutes.
 • Dissolve a teaspoon of liquid natural honey in a glass of fatty kefir. Add 2 drops of ginger, geranium and black pepper oil there. Taking a bath, as in the previous case, 20 minutes.
 • Dissolve a couple of tablespoons of sea salt in a glass of full-fat milk. Add a few drops of orange and lemon oils. Mix everything well and pour into the bath.
 • For acne on the body, the following recipe is suitable: add lemon, lemon balm and rosemary in a couple of drops and 4 drops of bergamot to a glass of kefir.
 • Baths with fennel will help remove toxins from the body, as well as get rid of a couple of kilograms. Dissolve 5 drops of essential oil in 50 ml of the fattest cream. Taking a bath - 15 minutes.
 • To fight cellulite, you can try massage. Take any citrus oil you like and mix it with honey. Massage the problem areas of the body with the composition. After that, leave the mass on the skin for 15 minutes and rinse.
 • For massage, a composition of avocado oil and 10 g of grape seed oil is suitable.
 • Mix 2 drops each orange oil, juniper oil, and black pepper. Massage the resulting mass every other day, for 15-20 minutes.
 • Rosemary, anise and petitgrain will help to tighten the skin and give it elasticity. Mix all the ingredients in equal proportions, add any base oil (in this case jojoba will work) and apply to problem areas.

Essential oils for hair

When choosing a hair oil, always rely on the type of the latter.

 • For dry curls, lavender, sandalwood, geranium and aloe oils are preferred.
 • For oily hair, use cypress, rosemary, lemon and mint oils.
 • For the normal type, choose cedarwood, thyme, sage, and lemon oils.

It is also worth deciding which side of your hair does not suit you and only after that select the recipe.

 • Jojoba and avocado are wonderful hair moisturizers.
 • The tea tree can help provide comprehensive treatment for hair loss and dandruff. Optimizes the process of sebum production, so it is perfect for oily hair.
 • Do you want to grow thick and long hair quickly and efficiently? Then rosemary oil will help you! In addition to accelerated growth, oil helps to heal curls.
 • Prevention and treatment of split ends will be carried out with castor oil. By the way, it is no less effective in the fight against dandruff.
 • Have your hair lost its silkiness and shine? Ylang-ylang is the elixir that will give your hair a mirror-like shine and a breathtaking scent. For hair care, simply add a few drops to your hair shampoo and wash your hair as usual.

Attention! Always test for allergic reactions before trying essential oils. This will help avoid many problems. Otherwise, the effect of the application will be exactly the opposite.

DIY essential oil

The factory product is good, but the handmade one is even better. Therefore, if you really want to take care of yourself only with natural preparations, try to prepare them yourself. Here are some recipes for essential oils.

Lavender oil

You will need 2 tablespoons of flowering lavender stems and a glass of base oil (your choice). Combine the ingredients, pour into a tube with a tight lid and place in a dark place for a couple of months. Shake occasionally.

Orange oil

Peel 2 to 3 oranges and rinse. Chop finely and place the raw materials in a jar and cover with vegetable oil or any other base oil. Leave in a dark place for 4-5 days. After that, put the jar in a water bath, after opening the lid, for half an hour. Finally, strain the composition through a sieve.

Melissa oil

Pour a couple of tablespoons of dry herb of lemon balm with a glass of base oil and leave to infuse for a couple of months in a dark place. At the end, strain the composition and use it for health.

Calendula oil

Take calendula flowers and base oil in a 1: 5 ratio. You need to insist at least three weeks. After that, the oil must be filtered and poured into a dark jar.

Lemon oil

Take a 200 ml jar and fill halfway with finely grated lemon zest. Pour the olive oil there so that it reaches the neck. Leave the tube in the sun for 2-3 weeks. Shake the container daily. At the end, strain the composition. The oil is ready.

Almost all essential oils are prepared according to this principle at home.

Essential oils: reviews

Despite the fact that natural cosmetology is considered to be slow-acting, essential oils refute this opinion. Everyone who used esters for specific purposes, while carefully selecting the ingredients and observing the regularity of the procedures, received excellent results very soon.

Some have had an allergic reaction, but this is not the fault of the product, but rather the fault of the user. To avoid this kind of trouble, always check for allergies by applying a little of the compound to the bend of your elbow.

Essential oils are obtained by cold pressing from the whole plant or its individual parts (root, leaves, fruits, inflorescences, petals, stem, seeds, sprouts, etc.). The production of oil is associated with the use of special technologies that allow you to preserve the maximum amount of beneficial trace elements of the oil after processing.

High-quality essential oils can be obtained only from excellent raw materials - plants growing in ecologically clean areas. It is almost impossible to prepare aromatic oils at home. Therefore, when buying ethers, you should pay attention to the manufacturer. As a rule, he indicates those regions or countries where plants for the preparation of oils are collected (for example, Morocco, India, Altai, Alps, etc.).

The spectrum of action of natural essences is extremely wide. Essential oils can be used for:

 • curing various diseases;
 • skin care for hands, face, body;
 • hair restoration and / or treatment (including baldness);
 • increasing sex drive in men and women;
 • elimination of sexual dysfunctions;
 • relieving stress (calming effect);
 • pain relief (eg, headaches);
 • solutions to cosmetic problems and more.

Solving problems may require the use of one type of ether or several. There are universal oils (suitable for various purposes) and narrow action. Basically, all the available aroma oils have anti-aging properties, are able to favorably influence the human body as a whole, cheer up and give aroma. , more details ...

Essential oils for cosmetic use

100% natural essences cannot be used in their pure form, as they can burn the skin. But there are base oils (jojoba, shea, wheat germ, flaxseed, grape seed) that can serve as the basis for a mixture of esters.

Add 1-5 drops of other oils to the base oil. The mixture is massaged onto the skin.

Oils can be added to finished cosmetics. However, it is important to remember that supplements should be selected based on their basic properties. So, if it is necessary to provide moisture to dry skin, the best aromatic oils for this will be:

 • wheat germ;
 • peach;
 • rosewood;
 • sandalwood;
 • ylang-ylang;
 • geranium;
 • rosemary.

To combat increased oily skin on the face, it is preferable to use:

 • cypress;
 • anise;
 • lemon;
 • grapefruit;
 • pistachio;
 • bergamot;
 • myrrh;
 • verbena.

Indispensable in hair care will become citrus oils,. A mixture of them must be applied in its pure form on a massage brush (preferably a wooden one). Brush your hair with a scented brush for at least 30 minutes twice a day. Within two or three weeks, the hair will acquire a healthy shine, become much "stronger", and stop hair loss.

Frankincense oil is used to protect against energy vampires. It is enough to wear a few drops in a pendant around your neck to reliably protect yourself from ill-wishers and the "evil" eye. And patchouli oil is used.

Therapeutic uses of essential oils

With the help of essential oils, you can effectively eliminate bronchial, viral and colds. Inhaling the aroma of ethers can even relieve swelling in the throat. A mixture of such oils as eucalyptus, juniper and fir will quickly get rid of severe forms of bronchitis (children from 3 years old can be treated).

Fumigation with an aroma lamp with juniper oil produces a disinfecting effect comparable to quartzing (ultraviolet lamps).

Essential oils will be of great help in the fight against skin diseases. For example, eczema is treated with oil:

 • geranium;
 • lavender;
 • cypress;
 • basilica;
 • sage;
 • thyme;
 • oregano.

Acne (blackheads) and pimples can be easily eliminated if pure essential ether is applied to the foci of inflammation. Rubbing is performed twice a day (morning, evening) on cleansed skin. Apply aromatic oil only to the affected skin.

For women suffering from the appearance of unpleasant odors in the genitals, lavender and nutmeg esters will demonstrate their magical effect. Prepare water for washing as follows: add 1 drop of nutmeg and 5 lavender to 0.5 liters of boiled water.

The water should be slightly warmer than room temperature. You need to wash yourself twice a day after using cleansers (soap, gels). Do not add any aromatic oil to too hot water, as it evaporates.

Aphrodisiac oils

The use of blends of essences can induce sexual attraction. Aromatic oils are capable of not only arousing, but also allowing intercourse to last longer. If you want to arrange a romantic evening and tune your partner in a love mood, you should fumigate the room or sprinkle the bed with such oils:

 • rosewood;
 • neroli;
 • sandalwood;
 • jasmine;
 • cinnamon;
 • vanilla;
 • nutmeg;
 • patchouli;
 • bergamot;
 • ylang-ylang.

A mixture of cream-based oils can be used for erotic massage.

Can aromatic oils be used internally

If essential oils are produced according to all the rules and organic plants are used, some aroma oils can be taken with drinking. Basically, it is prescribed by an aromatherapist to combat colds, bronchial diseases.

It is also possible to use oils inside for the purpose of general strengthening of the body and weight loss. Some oils, specifically for these purposes, are available in gelatin capsules. This greatly simplifies the intake of oil, however, a specialist must select and prescribe them. Do not self-medicate!

It is worth choosing exclusively high-quality, natural essential oils. Only in this case will their application be effective.

All natural essential oils have become very popular lately, and for good reason. To some extent, they are natural therapeutic agents. However, their origin from plants does not mean that they are absolutely harmless. Essential oils are very potent chemicals, so there is a lot of risk associated with their use.

I love essential oils, but I try to apply them very carefully. It is better to use them on the principle of “better under- than over-“. Most often I add them to cosmetics, but I also use them to scent a room and to treat certain diseases.

In this article, I will list the risks associated with using essential oils and which should be considered before using them (and, of course, you should consult with an aromatherapist or doctor before using this or that oil).

Poor quality essential oils

The first thing to look out for when using an essential oil is its quality. Too many of what we have on the market are substandard and synthetic essential oils. Essential oil from a pharmacy is almost 100% substandard or synthetic. In Russia, it is not legally defined what is 100% essential oil. And the synthetic substance can be called essential oil. Also, essential oils are often altered by the addition of synthetic chemicals, diluted with base oil (although this is not always a bad thing, it sometimes makes expensive oils like roses or neroli more readily available).

Only natural essential oil obtained in compliance with all technologies from high-quality and environmentally friendly raw materials can have a real therapeutic effect. Natural essential oils, but obtained without adherence to technologies from second-rate raw materials, can be very cheap, but they will not give a good therapeutic effect and can be dangerous.

How to identify a quality essential oil?

It is extremely difficult for a non-specialist to independently determine the quality of an essential oil. However, there are still signs of quality oils that you should pay attention to when purchasing.

It must be understood that essential oil cannot cost little, since it takes a lot of raw materials to make it.

For example, for making:

 • 1 kg of mint essential oil requires 256 kg of mint leaves;
 • 1 liter of neroli essential oil requires more than 2 tons of orange blossom;
 • 1 liter of rose essential oil requires tons of rose petals.

Also, the cost of oils from different plants is very different. Citrus and conifer oils are cheaper than flower oils.

According to international standards, a bottle of essential oil should be made of dark glass with a dosimeter on the neck. Packaging is usually from 1 to 15 ml. The bottle must contain the botanical name of the plant from which the oil was obtained, the manufacturer and its address, as well as the expiration date. It should also read "100% natural essential oil" or "100% Essential Oil", "Pure Essential Oil", "Pure and Natural". You also need to buy from trusted manufacturers and suppliers, this gives a certain guarantee of product quality. For example, Primavera Life, Еdenbotanicals, Aura Cacia, Karel Hadek, Aroma-zone, Iris, Glorion, Aromarti.ru, Aromashka.

Essential oils are highly concentrated substances

Experiments have been carried out on laboratory animals, which have shown that excessive dosages or too high concentrations of essential oils contribute to the development of tumors and other dangerous changes in the body. Some essential oils can be harmful to the skin, liver, and other organs if used improperly.

Essential oils have the concentrated properties of the herbs or plants from which they are derived. A small amount of essential oil is often equivalent to liters of herbal tea from the same plant. For example, one drop of peppermint oil is equivalent to 26-28 cups of peppermint tea. After all, drinking such an amount of tea without thinking is simply impossible, so you have to think using the equivalent amount of essential oil. This does not mean that essential oils cannot be used, but they should be used with great care, having studied the area of application, contraindications and measuring out a safe amount.

Harm of essential oils when applied to the skin

Most essential oils are not applied undiluted to the skin. Due to their small molecular size, they can penetrate the skin and easily enter the bloodstream. Therefore, as a rule, essential oils should be diluted in a base oil such as almond or jojoba to 3-5%. In practice, this is 3-5 drops of essential oils per teaspoon of base oil (for children, the concentration should be much lower).

Applying undiluted oils to the skin may cause irritation or an allergic reaction. Skin irritation can often be caused by:

 • lemongrass essential oil;
 • essential oil of cinnamon leaves;
 • citronella essential oil;
 • bey essential oil.

However, some oils, such as tea tree, lavender, rose, and chamomile, are generally considered safe to apply directly to the skin, but you still need to be careful with them. Plus, flower essential oils are quite expensive to use undiluted. But again, first of all, you should always consult with a qualified specialist before using.

Phototoxicity of some oils

The phototoxicity of the oil is manifested in the fact that it makes the skin more sensitive to ultraviolet radiation. For example, applying a cream with phototoxic oil to your skin and then going to the beach or tanning salon increases the likelihood of getting a burn.

Most often, some citrus oils such as bergamot, lemon, lime, orange are distinguished by phototoxicity. While there is conflicting information about orange oil, descriptions sometimes indicate that it is not phototoxic.

Internal use of essential oils

The internal use of essential oils is a controversial area. Many experts believe that taking essential oils internally is generally unacceptable. And for me this is also extreme. However, some experts find it possible to ingest individual oils, but with extreme caution. Since a drop of essential oil is equivalent to 15-40 cups of herbal tea (depending on the plant) or 20 times the recommended dose of tincture of the same plant, they should only be taken internally in extreme cases when absolutely necessary and under the guidance of a qualified professional.

Essential oils are extremely potent plant substances that can have very powerful effects on the body. Many online sources praise their "antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties." However, the fact is that in our intestines there is just a huge number of different types of bacteria that are simply necessary for us.

The effects of essential oils on bacteria in the gut have not yet been well studied. And it is very likely that essential oils with very real antibacterial properties can lead to the death of many types of bacteria in the intestine (including the death of useful and necessary ones).

Essential oils: when good and when bad.

Essential oils during pregnancy:

Doctors claim that pregnant women you should categorically abandon the use of angelica, basil and juniper essential oils, and other aromatic oils should be used in a lower concentration, half as much as usual.

If during the session aromatherapyif you feel unwell, you should apply a contrast shower for 15 minutes. If it does not help, then you need to take a bath, having previously dissolved 0.5 kg of ordinary rock salt in it.

Scented oils should not be used at home to treat serious illness or relieve stress.

The basics of aroma massage technique:

 • Aromatic oil is used in a strict dosage (carefully read the instructions on the package!) And is not used in its pure form. It must be diluted in a cream or base oil - for example, avocado, almond, aloe, macadamia, shea, grape seed, apricot or peach essential oils, wheat germ.
 • It is better to choose the base and essential oil on the advice of a beautician. The most harmonious mixtures consist of several oils of different properties.
 • It is better not to mix the aromatic oil with the whole jar of cream or base at once, but prepare a small portion of the mixture in a separate container.
 • Aromasmemi cannot be a permanent care product: after 2-3 weeks you need to take a break for 1-2 weeks, and during the course it is better to alternate several different mixtures.
 • Safe concentration of aromatic oils per 30 ml of base: from 22 to 65 years old - up to 10 drops, after 65 - up to 5 drops.

Contraindications:

 • Acute infectious allergic rashes (eczema, etc.) and inflammatory skin diseases (acne).
 • A large number of moles and papillomas, as well as microcracks, injuries, cuts, abrasions.
 • Pregnancy, colds, fever, diseases of the thyroid gland and cerebral vessels.

Facial massage is best done in the middle of the menstrual cycle. At the beginning of the cycle, they do not do it: a hormonal background working on a different background can cause unnecessary rashes, and massage will only intensify them. To the same, during this period, pain sensitivity increases.

And of course, as in any other case of using any non-traditional method of treatment, be sure to consult with your doctor first.
