Can liquid wallpaper glues on a wooden wall. Glue liquid wallpaper with your own hands: advantages and disadvantages

Such a name as liquid wallpaper appeared not so long ago on the market of building materials, but it is already used in a thousand apartments of every city where repairs are underway. And this is not surprising, because during repair work there is nothing easier than applying liquid wallpaper to the wall.

Classmates

Besides the fact that they are easy to glue, liquid wallpapers have such advantages as originality, brightness and they are environmentally friendly. They do not require careful care. But still, those who have no idea about this material remained in our time. And even more - they do not trust such an innovation.

What is liquid wallpaper?

It will not be superfluous to talk in detail about such an innovation in building materials as liquid wallpaper.

On store shelves, they can be found as bags with colorful sawdust. If in more detail, then these sawdust are nothing but cotton and cellulose granules, dyes and glue. But besides them, the kit can be attached with threads, crumbs and mica of various bright colors. When soaking, and after application and drying, the walls, painted with liquid wallpaper, become soft, slightly rough and even warm.

Mixtures come in different colors.

Liquid wallpapers are divided into several types, but at the same time they do not have such differences with each other. Only when applying, you can highlight the difference. Some lie in a thinly even layer, while others may have special crevices.

How to glue liquid wallpaper on the wall?

Before applying liquid wallpaper, a wall is needed. This procedure is no different from preparing the walls for ordinary wallpaper. And it consists in removing old wallpaper, other unwanted elements (nails, hooks, etc.), and after leveling the walls.

There are several ways to remove old wallpapers:

 1. We apply special chemicals to them, when it settles for about fifteen minutes, we begin to strip off with a special tool.
 2. We soak a section of wallpaper with warm water, after five minutes of settling, we begin to scrape them off with a spatula or knife.

If the walls have some kind of color, then you need to get rid of it, resorting to help, paint and enamel. In the case of do not forget that in addition to the docking points, it must be putty in full. Otherwise, the white stripes cannot be hidden, and after everything dries, they will become noticeable. After that, everything must be treated with water-based paint. Since it is possible to soak the putty, if you put liquid wallpaper on it. It will not be superfluous to add PVA, but only if plaster putty is used. This will have a positive effect on strengthening the wall, and negatively on the absorption of moisture.

Before gluing liquid wallpaper on a wooden surface, you need to familiarize yourself with its thickness. If the surface is thin, then this will only contribute to its deformation, in contact with liquid wallpaper. In order to avoid this, it is imperative to apply oil paint. It is applied in two, or better yet, in three layers. After which the surface is treated with water-based paint.

How to make a mixture?

To begin, we select the desired capacity. A plastic basin will come off completely. Then warm water should be poured into it (neither hot nor cold). Now you can throw in the contents of the bag, but do it a little bit, while stirring the solution. For stirring, you can use a special mixer. Thus, upon completion, color mashed potatoes should form in the container. If lumps come into it, then they must be removed, otherwise it will disfigure the walls.

When the batch is ready, it must be put on stand for twenty minutes. Then re-stir. So that after applying liquid wallpaper, the wall does not turn out different shades, you need to pour out all the available packages into the container with the mixture. This is because you can apply liquid wallpaper only once. Two or three steps will fail. Otherwise, each wall will have its own shade.

The solution is prepared for no more than ten minutes, after which it must be left to "stand" for some time. Now you can get down to business!

Application of liquid wallpaper on the wall

We list the necessary tools:

- basin with a mixture

- roller / for leveling

- to give the original texture you need a special knurling roller

- “colorless” varnish for application to liquid wallpaper at the end of work

I would like to say right away that the generally accepted word “glue” is inappropriate to say the least. Liquid wallpaper by the characteristics of its composition are more suitable for liquid materials. And of course, before applying them to the wall, you don’t have to use special glue. But it will not be superfluous to treat the walls with a light adhesive solution.

We pull out a small amount of the mixture from the basin, and distribute it with a spatula / roller over its surface. We do not regret the mixture, not allowing voids to form on the wall. But evenly distribute the mixture so that no bulges are formed. After you have finished with the first portion of the mixture, proceed to the second. No need to distinguish between the areas of application of the first and second mixtures.

There are also oversights in the form of lumps and bald spots. Any such unwanted formation on the wall should be wetted, and then this defect should be removed. Then apply a new layer of the mixture in its place. Carefully level the roller / trowel. The main thing is not to part with such an operation. Wallpaper is able to withstand no more than 3 soaking.

Ideally, for such work it would be great to have a special hopper gun for applying liquid wallpaper. Then everything will go much faster. But not everyone can afford it. And since in addition to the gun, a compressor that regulates the pressure is also needed, the possibility of acquiring it for the majority disappears. But the opportunity to rent all this does not disappear.

Different colors and texture of liquid wallpaper

If you are going to decorate the wall with a pattern, then you need to make a special stencil. The drawing is done in stages - fragment by fragment. For each fragment - its own stencil.

That, in general, is all. The main application is completed. Now you need to wait for their complete drying. How long the drying process will take depends on what temperature in your apartment. The standard drying time of liquid wallpaper is considered to be three days. After drying, the surface is evenly treated with colorless varnish. But in no case do this until completely dry! Otherwise, the wallpaper will be deformed, and all the efforts are down the drain!

Liquid wallpaper is the choice of truly original and creative people. In addition to the main coating, you can apply a variety of patterns. As well as figures and patterns.

An important plus of liquid wallpaper is the absence of seams, which can not be said about paper. This is one of the main reasons for peeling paper wallpapers. In addition, the design of the room, thanks to the liquid wallpaper, seems very original. This innovation is used in almost all major design projects.

With any destruction of a certain section of the wallpaper after some time, it can easily be restored. And this is another plus of liquid wallpaper.

In order to restore a damaged area, it must be completely removed, and then put it in a container with warm water. Then put back on the wall. And most importantly, after drying, this area will not be different from others. Although damage to such a surface seems very difficult.

And for cleaning, just wiping with a rag is enough. Maximum - with a vacuum cleaner. But, in no case do not use cleaning products - this adversely affects the surface.

In order to finish the walls and ceiling with the so-called silk plaster with your own hands, you do not need any special skills or knowledge. Lack of experience is also not a serious obstacle - even a school student can glue liquid wallpaper. Nevertheless, to do the job quickly and efficiently, diligence and attentiveness will be required. And knowledge of important nuances, at least in theory, will free you from doubt and the “effect of shaking hands”.

Features of the material "fillings"

Before starting work, it is useful to find out the basic qualities of the material to be dealt with. The first thing you need to pay attention to: liquid wallpaper, despite the name, is completely different from the standard roll wallpaper. By the principle of application, they are more like decorative plaster. The hardened coating is devoid of seams, soft and warm to the touch.

The most common finished dry mix, in which decorative impregnations and colors were added. There are also designer options for compositions, which are a white basis for self-adding the necessary color and texture elements to the master.

In the absence of work experience, it is better to give preference to the first option: the correct calculation of the required amount of additives for the covered area can cause difficulties. And all errors will be clearly visible on the finished layer: color differences, lack or excess of sparkles, etc.

The dry liquid wallpaper pack is a lightweight, porous mixture of all-natural hypoallergenic ingredients for reconstitution with water. Material is prepared on the basis of:

 • silks;
 • cellulose;
 • cotton.

Adhesives and decorative elements are added to the base composition.

The most persistent and, at the same time, the most expensive are wallpapers, entirely consisting of silk fiber. They are not subject to fading in the sun, do not fade and do not lose the freshness of flowers for many years.

Important material handling considerations

The technique of applying liquid wallpaper is completely different from the process of sticking your roll "namesake". By analogy, the decoration is more like working with paint or decorative plaster, with experience with which it will not be difficult to master new skills.

The nuances of working with liquid wallpaper:

 • In the process of finishing, a uniform uniform layer is formed over the entire surface of the walls, ceiling, slopes.
 • The composition is well suited for covering corners, protrusions and any uneven areas.
 • Liquid wallpaper is easy to apply using a minimum of special tools. And some varieties are suitable for spraying with a hopper gun.
 • Interaction with the material does not require the use of skin protection products due to the absence of toxic and allergenic components. Only a construction respirator is used when mixing the dry mixture with water to protect the respiratory system from hygroscopic particles.
 • To set the material, a decent time is required - from 12 to 72 hours - which allows you to remove the errors of the finished layer before it hardens.

The structure of the composition allows it to be applied again if necessary: it is enough to soak the previously applied coating fragment with water and glue it again.

What you can't do without: tools

It is impossible to clearly identify the list of necessary devices for working with liquid wallpaper. The uniqueness of the material is that it can be applied by almost any means at hand, and it is worthwhile to build on the devices that the home craftsman has or on his experience with other types of finishes - putty, paint, plaster.

So, for work fit:

 1. Graters.
 2. Trowels (a special transparent trowel made of plastic is shown in the photo below).
 3. Plastic or metal spatulas.
 4. Hopper gun.
 5. Rollers (with sparse pile - for application, ribbed - for creating textures).

Cooking surface

To get exactly the shades of the coating that were planned, or to create a high-quality drawing of liquid wallpaper, you need to carefully prepare the base.

In general, preparation comes down to removing the previous finish coatings - whitewash, exfoliated paint, old roll wallpaper and others - as well as removing pits and cracks on the floors, followed by applying the primer. Detailed step-by-step instructions for pretreating walls and ceilings can be found.

If you plan to finish with gypsum plasterboard with silk plaster, you will need to know some of the nuances. Recommendations for the preparation of GCR are described in.

Note! Liquid wallpaper does not require such careful alignment as under ordinary rolled material or paint. A viscous mass will fill small grooves and hide defects. However, it should be understood that the more uneven the wall, the higher the flow rate.

The first step: preparing the mixture

Most often, liquid wallpaper is packaged in packages with a nominal weight of 1 kilogram. In addition to the base, various decorative elements are added to the packaging.

When calculating the amount of the mixture, it should be noted that the entire area should be processed at a time. The joint of the hardened coating and the wet mixture is not allowed, except in cases of restoration of the old layer.

Note! The mass of the contents of the package is taken in accordance with the instructions plus a small margin. The fact is that manufacturers in the calculations use ideal application conditions, which in reality are rare. Usually it is 300-400 g of dry composition per square meter. m

We act in stages:

 • To dissolve dry material, pour it into a container and fill it with water.

As a standard, 6 liters of liquid is taken per kilogram of wallpaper.

 • Mix the resulting mass. It will be correct to do this only by hand, so as not to damage the texture of decorative impregnations.
 • After cooking, leave the container with a batch to swell for 12 hours.
 • Before starting work, the wet mass is thoroughly mixed again.

Application of liquid wallpaper to the surface

There are two ways to glue the material: manual and mechanical (by spraying). It is worth noting that the word “glue” does not really reflect the process of applying a thick mass to the surface. Work with the composition is largely similar to the method of fixing decorative plaster.

Manual way

As the name implies, the work is done by hand using several tools. The process itself is simple, and managing liquid wallpaper is easier than, for example, with putty.

Application without a gun gives a better coating.

Step-by-step instruction:

 1. The finished mixture is collected from the tank simply by hand or using a small spatula.
 2. Then it is applied to the surface in small portions.
 3. Leveling is carried out with a plastic or metal trowel. When necessary, use a trowel and a roller.

It is better to withstand the thickness of the layer in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations written on the package: it may differ depending on the composition. Sometimes the manufacturer does not provide information about the thickness, in which case a layer of approximately 2-3 mm is applied.

Important! It is forbidden to work with liquid wallpaper in the cold. The optimum temperature is from +10 degrees and above.

Application by gun

The mechanical method is often used when covering large areas. It should be borne in mind that not all types of wallpaper are suitable for use in a spray.

You also need to pay attention to the device itself, with the help of which the material will be sprayed. If a Hopper gun is used, then the working pressure of the compressor should not be lower than 3-4 atmospheres, and the total productivity should be from 210 l / m. However, given the inevitable loss of power at the fluid outlet from the nozzle, it is recommended to use an aggregate that processes at least 250 l / m.

The mixture of wallpaper for spraying should have a consistency of thick sour cream. Application is made progressively, without gaps and delays in one place. As with the manual method, docking of dry and wet coatings is not allowed.

Tip. During operation, use a bright spotlight aimed at the surface to be treated. Such illumination easily shades layers of different thicknesses, allowing you to align them before the material dries, and also makes all the gaps noticeable.

Subsequent finishing

The disadvantage of standard liquid wallpaper is their instability to water. Therefore, to use them, for example, in the kitchen or bathroom, you will have to resort to additional processing.

HELPFUL INFORMATION: Aligning walls in the bathroom with plaster: step-by-step instructions

To clog pores and protect the material from moisture, use acrylic varnish. After impregnation, liquid wallpaper can be washed and not be afraid that they are deformed from high humidity. Varnishing of the lower part of the wall is also often used, for example, in children's rooms, where there is a need for a stable coating. But at the same time, you need to remember that the surface will lose its "breathing" qualities, and there will also be difficulties if it is necessary to restore the damaged area.

Your walls can be silk! Those who are now in search of ideas for a new repair in their home and certainly want to get by with their own repairs, should pay attention to the relatively unstressed version of decorating walls and ceilings with liquid wallpaper. They also have a different name - silk decorative plaster, not to be confused with ordinary plaster, which always includes sand.

This unusual wall covering has several advantages both when used in new buildings and when decorating worn-out walls. Liquid wallpaper is not afraid of shrinkage and does not give cracks, they do not need perfectly smooth walls, since gluing liquid wallpaper is quite simple. There is always a lot of room for creativity. Depending on the constituent fibers, liquid wallpaper can be: cellulose, silk-cellulose, silk.

The advantages of liquid wallpaper

What to hide, we love to start repairing our own hands. Here you have both savings and free time to do. Liquid wallpapers for such a "hobby" are ideal. Their price is relatively affordable: for Russian coverage, you will have to pay from 80 to 500 rubles per square meter, in the case of imported material, one square will cost between 400-2000 rubles.

At the same time, Russian manufacturers prefer packaging per kilogram and are enough for 4-5 square meters, while imported liquid wallpapers are packed with less weight and their consumption is slightly higher. Wallpaper and the thickness of the layer differ. 2 millimeters is enough for one to look perfect, while others suggest an application thickness of up to 4.5 millimeters.

In addition to the already mentioned advantages of the material itself, one can mention the soundproofing function of liquid wallpaper. They are fireproof, have many color and texture solutions, and due to the antistatic features of the components they repel dust.

From the point of view of design, the material can look “rich” due to the addition of gold threads, sparkles and other decorative elements. And you can make the wallpaper a neutral background, but due to the texture and color combinations, you can achieve extreme pretentiousness.

Cotton or silk?

It is also an environmentally friendly material, since it is based on cotton, cellulose or silk fibers. Most often, the coating is sold in dry form and consists of the already mentioned fibers, adhesive base and dyes.

Everything is divorced with water, has no smell, is safe for humans and animals.

By and large, what kind of fibers are used in wallpaper does not really matter. But if you are a meticulous lover of the natural, it is better to prefer cotton and cellulose, because the silk in this wall covering is, of course, artificial. But all three types are equally warm and pleasant to the touch, in terms of consumer characteristics they are also not inferior to each other.

Liquid wallpaper containing silk is more durable and has better decorative properties than cellulose. What awaits us if we choose liquid wallpaper?

Safety

Having chosen the finish with liquid wallpaper, we will deal with a dry, environmentally friendly mixture, placed by the manufacturer in a plastic bag. The mixture contains cellulose, silk fibers, special dyes, adhesive binder and decorative elements such as sequins. The smell is absent.

Ease of applying wallpaper

Walls or ceilings before coating with liquid wallpaper do not have to be perfectly even, it is enough to apply the soil in 2 layers - along and across.

As a primer, you can use matte white oil paint - just one layer is enough. The mixture in bags is ready for use. Shake it to mix the components, pour it into a suitable container, mix thoroughly with your hands (absolutely safe for the skin) and put it back in the bag for 12 hours to “mature”. The amount of water is always indicated on the package with the mixture.

Repair without problems

The application process is easy even for a layman, you can work alone, you just need to adapt to working with a trowel (plastic grout is suitable) so that the wet mixture does not slip and does not fall off. If the mixture gets on the furniture or floor - it is easily removed. No dirt or odors. At any time, you can stop, the shelf life of the prepared mixture is 14 days. No need to worry about joints, as with rolled wallpaper. Wall roughness? Decorating with liquid wallpaper perfectly masks irregularities. It is permissible to ventilate the room at any stage - this does not harm liquid wallpaper.

Convenience

It is easy to fix any flaws during the initial application or in the future, even from an already dried wall, it is enough to spray water on the place you want to fix, carefully remove the soaked material and apply it again. This is one of the main conveniences and properties of liquid wallpaper: remove and apply coatings many times. The remaining wet mixture should not be thrown away, it must be dried at room temperature, it will not lose its properties and may be useful in the future.

Creative potential

For people prone to their own design, working with liquid wallpaper is an opening for creativity. With the help of mixtures that differ in color or texture, it is possible to carry out combined application of the material, to impose contrast strips, geometry or patterns. The ornament can be thought up and applied to the surface even after finishing. From small residues of the mixture, you can easily make some crafts, which will greatly delight children. Products are dried, covered with additional decor with glue, varnished. The decor can be pebbles, pieces of amber, buttons.

Economical repair

Dressing the walls in silk is an affordable pleasure, given the cost of the material itself and the ability not to resort to the services of professionals. At the same time, you will get environmentally friendly, pleasant to the touch, surprisingly warm, beautiful and not “like everyone else's” walls.

Minus one: Liquid wallpaper should not be applied in wet rooms. But you will not cover the walls of the bathroom with them?

Where will we glue

This coating is ideal for uneven walls with complex terrain: it will hide the imperfections and apply easily. In principle, you can glue liquid wallpaper in residential, and in unheated, and in wet rooms. But in the bathroom or in the kitchen they will have to be coated with a protective varnish, which increases the cost of repairs and deprives the material of one of the main properties - microporous structure that allows you to "breathe". It is more logical to use other wall coverings in such rooms.

As for the surfaces, such wallpapers fit well practically on any of them: from brick to metal. But manufacturers recommend that you use special primers in order to avoid marriage in work. Please note that for light wallpapers it is worth using light primers, and for dark ones - dark ones. Otherwise, the final appearance of the coating may be distorted.

The big advantage is the absence of seams, it is convenient to mask small wall defects with liquid wallpaper, they easily eliminate the gaps around sockets, switches, and eliminate the loose fit of baseboards and platbands.

How to care

In order for the color and texture of liquid wallpaper to be the same, on the same wall you need to use a portion prepared at a time. Because the components are mixed by hand, subtle distinctive nuances are possible. At the same time, they will not be noticeably on different walls.

Liquid wallpaper is easily “repaired”. It is enough to remove the damaged or contaminated fragment and apply a new one in its place. But if the initial coating was applied for a long time, or cigarette smoke or kitchen soot fell on it, then the color of the brand new patch may differ significantly. Think about it in advance.

By the way, divorced wallpapers can be stored in the freezer. Just in case. This type of wallpaper is removed from the wall in the same way as the most ordinary.

Do-it-yourself master class

The services of third-party construction companies are now not cheap, but I want to save money, and so that the result is pleasing to the eye, then you have no choice, learn the rules for applying liquid wallpaper. How to glue liquid wallpapers without skills, read the detailed step-by-step action plan.

So, we proceed to the application. First you need to prepare the wall - remove dirt, old coating, if any. Next, the walls need to be treated with special primers. Liquid wallpaper has the peculiarity of pulling excess moisture from the walls, old paint components, which is why spots can appear. A primer will prevent this.

Wallpaper is usually glued in the warm season or in a heated room.
First you need to pour enough water into the container, the necessary information should be indicated on the package. Then dry spangles are poured into the water, which subsequently allows you to distribute them evenly. A dry fiber mixture is poured there. Give her a little soak in the water and mix. You can directly with your hands, as we recall, the mixture is harmless.

This can be done with a conventional spatula or professional gun, from where the mixture is sprayed under high pressure. Sometimes sellers of material give such guns for rent. In any case, it is important that the mixture is applied evenly, without gaps.
As for the surface topography, it can be smooth as planned, then the mixture is simply leveled with a spatula. After 1-2 hours, small defects can be easily eliminated with a spatula dipped in water.

For a more complex terrain, special rollers are sold. They imitate the structure of matting, wood, stone. An interesting texture can also be achieved manually, by applying chaotic or meaningful pressing movements with a spatula. If you do not understand some of the actions, watch the video how to glue liquid wallpaper with your own hands using the classical method.

As a result, you will get beautiful walls, and feel like a real jack of all trades.

To figure out how to apply liquid wallpaper on the wall is pretty simple. But the final result depends not only on the application technique, but also on the quality preparation of the material and the surface to be treated. In the article I will tell you how to prepare the walls and the decorative composition for decoration, describe the working method, and also give tips on the care and repair of the decorative coating.

What is the material?

Liquid wallpaper is a decorative composition that is applied to the wall, forming a uniform coating with good performance and aesthetic characteristics. One of the key advantages of the material is the possibility of applying it on the surface at home without the involvement of specialists and without the use of sophisticated equipment.

Liquid wallpaper consists of the following components:

 1. Glue base - is responsible for fixing the material on the wall. The base uses dry adhesive CMC (or its analogues), which swells upon contact with water.
 2. Binder - acrylic or latex-acrylic complex. The material provides hardening of the applied coating and gives it elasticity. If the wallpaper, after drying, begins to crumble and crumble, it means that the manufacturer could not stand the proportion and added less acrylic to the composition than necessary.

 1. Fibrous filler is the main material that forms the coating. Cotton, cellulose, linen, wool, synthetic fiber, etc. are used as filler. The most durable and most beautiful will be wallpaper with silk thread - but they are also the most expensive.

Naturally, silk usually refers to materials with a high content of silk in linen or cotton.

 1. Dye - responsible for the color of the material.

In addition to the main components, the material may include additional:

 • synthetic fiber reinforcing threads;
 • sparkles (glitters) from mica or foil polymer film;
 • antiseptics - bactericidal (antimicrobial) and fungicidal (antifungal) additives;
 • hardeners, plasticizers, antistatic additives, etc.

Preparation for work

Tools

The technology of applying liquid wallpaper is good because it does not require the use of complex and expensive equipment. For surface finishing can be used:

 • spray gun (for professional processing of large areas);
 • spatulas with a width of 20 to 60 cm;
 • trowels;
 • paint knives.

And still more often when decorating the walls with your own hands using this material, graters are used - metal or plastic. And the best tool is a transparent grater made of plastic or plexiglass: its surface allows you to control the quality of the formed coating and promptly make adjustments.

In addition to the hand tool, we will need:

 • containers for soaking liquid wallpaper;
 • spray gun for wetting surfaces;
 • a rack, scaffold or table for working at height.

As for workwear, you can limit yourself to a hat (so that you do not have to wash your hair from glue) and gloves. The composition of liquid wallpaper does not include volatile toxins, so working with them will be completely safe.

Surface

Before you begin to work, you need to prepare the basis for applying liquid wallpaper. This material will hold firmly only on a dry and clean surface, not prone to peeling. That is why even an initial inspection of the wall will show you whether it is possible to apply the coating - or whether it is necessary to perform cleaning / hard putty / primer.

Technology preparatory work will be as follows:

 1. To begin with, we remove from the wall all the objects installed on it - shelves, brackets, cornices, etc.
 2. Those structural elements that cannot be dismantled (window sills, moldings, etc.) are sealed with masking tape or covered with polyethylene. This will prevent the glue from entering.

 1. We remove wallpaper and other decorative coatings from the wall. Liquid wallpaper can not be applied to paint or whitewash - they will peel off along with the decorative layer.
 2. We tap the plaster to detect defects. The identified areas with a poorly adhering coating are cleaned to the base, and then re-aligned.
 3. Areas affected by the fungus are treated with antiseptics.

To understand what this decorative material can be applied to and how to prepare different substrates, study the following table:

Where are we applying? How to cook?
On plaster or concrete
 • we process a transparent or white penetrating primer;
 • align with starting putty;
 • carry out a second primer.
On drywall
 • embroider the seams between the sheets of gypsum plaster and glue them with a sickle;
 • primed drywall;
 • putty we fill the seams and eliminate the remaining bumps, including attachment points;
 • we process a surface with the penetrating soil (white / colorless).
On a wooden wall or partition made of chipboard / MDF / OSB
 • the surface of the wall is sanded to remove large fibers, splinter and burrs;
 • we process wood with alkyd enamel (PF-115 or equivalent);
 • instead of enamel, several layers of water-dispersed paint can be applied.
On metal surfaces
 • metal surfaces are cleaned from rust and oxides;
 • if necessary, we process the metal with a rust inhibitor / converter;
 • open the surface with alkyd enamel PF - 115.

The question of whether it is necessary to putty walls under liquid wallpaper is debatable. The need for this operation depends on the state of the surface. For this decorative material a perfectly even base is not necessary, so if the bumps do not exceed 1 - 1.5 mm, then putty can be discarded. A layer of fibrous coating will perfectly mask all defects.

Putty should be of high quality, but “without fanaticism” - minor defects will be hidden by the finish

The primer is another matter. The fact is that the most effective way of applying liquid wallpaper involves the introduction of a large amount of water (up to 2 liters per 1 m2).

If you do not protect the base with penetrating soil, then as a result of wetting there is a risk of delamination of the putty or plaster. And the walls of wood, wood boards or drywall can simply swell as a result of soaking.

It is very important that the soil is white or transparent. The use of tinted primers can lead to undesirable staining of the base of liquid wallpaper.

Composition for application

If you plan to finish yourself, then it is worth exploring how the volume of material is determined and how to prepare the composition for wall treatment yourself. Let's start with the first paragraph:

 1. We determine the area of all surfaces that need to be decorated. To do this, multiply the perimeter of the room by its height, and subtract the area of window and door openings from the obtained value.

 1. The calculated area is divided by the consumption of material (this value may differ depending on the particular brand of coating). On average, to finish one square meter, you need from 200 to 400 grams of dry matter, because a standard kilogram package is enough for 3-4 squares.
 2. Having determined the mass, we buy the amount of dry material we need. I highly recommend taking one package more than is estimated - and there will be a margin for defective products, and if necessary there will be something to repair the damaged area.

Now - preparing the material for application:

 1. We spread a clean sheet of polyethylene on the floor. Pour a dry base onto polyethylene, including an adhesive component, polymers and a fibrous filler. Mix until completely homogeneous.

This work is best done with gloves on. For additional protection, use a respirator (at least the primitive Petal and glasses).

 1. Pour clean water into a container with a wide neck (bucket, trough). The optimum water temperature is 40 - 500C. We fill in the dry component and mix by hand until the lumps with a dry core disappear completely.

It is advisable to mix some brands of liquid wallpaper with a drill with a mixer nozzle. For others, such intense exposure is undesirable - the color structure may be impaired. To understand what to do right, carefully read the instructions from the manufacturer.

 1. A container with a mixed composition is covered with polyethylene and left to glue to swell. Soaking time for different brands varies and can be from 2 to 8 hours.

 1. The swollen composition under the film retains its working qualities for at least a day, a maximum of 4-5 days. Re-soaking is undesirable since, due to partial hardening of the adhesive and polymers, the strength of fixation to the surface will be greatly reduced.

Wall decoration technology

Drawing on the plane

In this section I will tell you how to glue liquid wallpaper on a previously prepared base:

 1. With a spatula or just with your hand (preferably with a glove), we collect a small amount of material and apply it to the wall in the right place.
 2. We distribute the composition with a layer about 4-5 mm thick.
 3. We take a tool for smoothing - a spatula or a grater - and level the surface. In this case, the plane of the tool should be at an angle to the wall: so its edge will move the excess adhesive mass to the edge of the spot.

 1. The optimal layer is about 2 mm. After drying, it will decrease to 1 - 1.5 mm due to shrinkage.
 2. We continue to apply the material until we process about 1 - 1.5 m2. After that, we wet the grater, apply a plane to the surface and smooth the wallpaper in a circular motion.

 1. When smoothing, you need to keep in mind that sticking liquid wallpaper allows you to lay filler fibers in one direction or another. To do this, we perform the final movements at the right angle: where the grater “goes”, the fibers will fall there.
 2. The edges of the treated areas should be made uneven and not smoothed. This will allow joining adjacent areas without butt lines and noticeable seams.

 1. After machining the planes with an angled trowel, we additionally smooth out the internal and external corners. This will seal the material and reduce the risk of delamination.

 1. In the kitchen, in the corridor and in other rooms whose walls are experiencing increased stress, after drying, we process the wallpaper with varnish. The water-based polymer coating after polymerization will protect the decorative layer from moisture, dust and abrasion.

Patterning

The technology of wall decoration with liquid wallpaper allows not only to apply monophonic coatings, but also to alternate areas with different colors, and even form patterns. How to do it right - I will tell in this section:

 1. First, transfer the drawing to the prepared wall, marking its borders with a pencil. To obtain a large number of similar drawings, you can make a stencil from cardboard or thick paper.

 1. Then we apply a mixture of the same color so that the material goes beyond the contour by about 1.5 - 3 mm. We smooth the wallpaper, achieving the optimal thickness.
 2. We take a narrow spatula and from the inside of the contour we shift or gently cut off a part of the material until we see a line on the base.

 1. Smooth the edges with a grater.
 2. After the primary drying of one color, apply another, actions according to the same scheme.
 3. In addition, iron the lines of the junction of colors, moving the grater exactly along the contour. So we will avoid mixing the fibers, and the boundaries will be clear, not blurred.

Care and Repair

Caring for liquid wallpaper is quite simple:

 1. The surface without varnish is just a vacuum cleaner - this is enough to remove dust and minor contaminants.
 2. The lacquered coating can be wet cleaned. At least, regular wiping with a sponge moistened with soapy water, the wallpaper can withstand without consequences.

 1. Severe contamination and other defects can be corrected by removing the damaged area and masking the gap with new material. Before applying liquid wallpaper to liquid wallpaper, using a paint or trowel we clean the coating at the defect site, capturing a little from the “whole” surface.

 1. Then we primer the wall and the remains of the wallpaper, knead the composition thicker than during normal application, and carry out repairs. After thoroughly smoothing with a grater and drying, nothing should be visible!

 1. Another common problem is the change in hue in certain areas of the coating. If yellow spots appear after applying liquid wallpaper, it is most likely a matter of metal mortgages or moisture flowing through the plaster / putty.

 1. In this case, remove the decorative coating on the problematic area, dry the base and treat the wall several times with a white primer. Soil will not only become a barrier to moisture, but also create a homogeneous background for the decor. After polymerization of the primer, we restore the liquid wallpaper.

If yellowing is slight, then light coatings can be restored by treating the spots with whiteness. So that the wallpaper itself does not discolour, we dilute the whiteness with water in a ratio of 1: 3.

 1. You will have to do the same if the coating has swollen and peeled off the base. We clean the damaged area, re-primer or putty it again and then apply the decorative composition again.

Conclusion

The article describes the preparation of walls for decoration and the method of working with a decorative composition. Following these tips, you can independently apply liquid wallpaper, properly care for them, and if necessary - effectively repair almost any damage. You can get advice on this topic by asking a question in the comments.

Not so long ago, finishing materials for interior walls appeared on the construction markets, which is able to give the room an aesthetic modern look and even out minor defects at once. At the same time, the facing process will not be difficult and will be subject to even a novice.

Liquid is a kind of decorative plaster. This is a new milestone in design and repair. They differ in practicality and versatility, include many advantages. The powder mixture is represented by a wide range with a rich palette.

An assortment for every taste, with a variety of decorative additives, such as:

 • stone crumb;
 • sparkles;
 • beads;
 • wood shavings;
 • color.

Wall decoration with liquid wallpaper: advantages and features

If we compare this type of facing material with rolled competitors, the former have a number of positive aspects. For example:

 • ease of preparation of the material. No need to roll paper sheets throughout the room, measure and trim in height;
 • the main component is cellulose fiber, which is natural, which means environmentally friendly;
 • ease of workflow. There is no need to hire a master, the task can really cope on their own;
 • seamless, even result that does not require the selection of a picture;
 • “Breathable” material due to its vapor-permeable qualities;
 • good thermal conductivity and sound insulation;
 • preparation of the base does not require the elimination of minor defects;
 • easy replacement of the damaged area, it is enough to remove the damaged fragment with a clerical knife and apply a new solution to the cleaned area;
 • simple and quick removal of the coating with water;
 • the possibility of using the considered wallpaper plaster a second time.

The main disadvantage is the high price for this. Also, because of the reduced moisture resistance, the coating is not suitable for finishing a kitchen or bathroom without additional processing.

Wall preparation: requirements

Before applying the finishing coating, you need to prepare the base.

If this is not done, the result will be low-quality and short-lived.
 The preparatory phase includes several operations:

 • in the presence of an old facing it needs to be removed;
 • clean the wall, get rid of the remnants of glue, peeling plaster;
 • coat the base with 3 layers of primer.

Before coating a new primer coat, the previous one must be completely dried.

 1. apply gypsum putty on the base surface;
 2. make sure that there are no noticeable irregularities;
 3. with a hammer or a special hatchet to roughen the base for better adhesion of the material;
 4. coat the base with white water-based paint in several layers.

For better adhesion, PVA glue is added to the paint.

What is do-it-yourself application technology

Decorative plaster is applied by hand: with a spatula, trowel or roller, depending on certain conditions and the personal convenience of the master. It is advisable to fill large areas with wallpaper using the mechanical method, namely using a special-purpose gun, the so-called hopper.

How to glue: step by step instructions

 to finish, arm yourself with special tools, mix the powder correctly and adhere to proven application techniques - the path to a successful and high-quality repair result.

Tools for work

Currently, the process of covering the walls with decorative plaster simplifies the variety of special work accessories. Some tools are simply irreplaceable, and without others it is possible to do completely. Below is the main inventory:

 • large capacity for mixing the composition;
 • plexiglass or stainless steel spatula for applying a finish coat to the surface;
 • special corner spatulas are used when filling corner sections. Some masters still believe that it is more convenient to process such places with your fingers.
 • a spatula made of metal of small width (8-10 cm) for applying the solution to the main tool;
 • trowel - an alternative to a spatula, is a flat device with a handle in the middle;
 • special roller - an alternative to a spatula and trowel;
 • transparent grater for grouting the result, eliminating bulges, giving a smooth effect;
 • hopper gun will save time and is suitable for facing large rooms.

Application: all methods

At the beginning of work, it is necessary to prepare the material in accordance with the instructions. Dry powder is mixed with clean water in the desired consistency (on average, 5 liters of water are added to one package).

The mixture is poured into a container and water is gradually poured, while the mass is thoroughly mixed manually until a homogeneous composition is obtained. As a result, the solution is obtained as a thick sour cream.

Before pouring the powder into the container, it is recommended to shake the package with the contents.

For better mixing, the mixture should be diluted with water in one pack. Next, the finished solution must be left to ripen for 20-40 minutes.

After preparing the decorative solution with a smooth spatula at a slight angle, 10-15 degrees, with smooth movements of the hands, you need to apply it to the surface. Also, this procedure can be performed with a trowel or roller. The layer thickness should not exceed 2-3 mm.

The work cannot be left for tomorrow or another day, since different drying times can provoke the appearance of stitches.

After applying the material, it is important to pay attention to the evenness of the result. If there are bumps - remove them with a damp grater when the composition has seized, but has not yet managed to dry.

The use of powder of different colors is practiced. They are mixed and combined. Creative owners will be able to depict an interesting drawing on the wall with a thick solution. To do this, before applying the sketch is transferred in pencil to the base surface, then painted over with the composition.
 When using a hopper, it is worth considering that not all varieties of dry mix are suitable for this. Spraying the composition is required carefully, without long delays in one area.

Apply the solution first to one area, and then smoothly switch to another. Decorative finish dries in 1-3 days.

Is it possible to paint

If desired, you can update the appearance and change, lined with solutions of dry mixes, painting them with a roller with a fur nozzle. Repeating this procedure is allowed an unlimited number of times. There are no special types of paints for this type of coating, so paints are used:

 • water emulsion;
 • acrylic;
 • latex;
 • silicone.

If you adhere to certain rules, decorative plaster as a result of painting will not deteriorate. Updating the interior does not require large financial investments and does not take much time. Work will seem easy enough.

Possible disadvantages include the fact that after applying the paint the surface will already be solid, the patterns will become invisible. In addition, it will not be possible to remove the decorative facing coating with plain water.

For long service life, the wall surface is coated with acrylic varnish. After that, the contaminated sections of the wall are cleaned with a damp sponge.

If the wall after finishing has not been varnished, it is strictly forbidden to wash it with water. In this case, you need to use a vacuum cleaner. You can restore the damaged area by removing the damaged fragment. It is necessary to soak it in water and apply it again in its original place.

How long do they serve

Decorative material is characterized by good indicators of wear resistance and durability. Subject to the conditions of application, use and care, the lining will last for years.

High-quality decoration of the room with solutions of dry mixes is an excellent design solution. Even in the absence of skills, repair will not seem laborious, but it will certainly please the owners. The ability to mix colors, complement the composition with various inclusions and create unique images gives freedom to fantasies and interesting ideas.
