How to connect a three-arm chandelier. How to connect a chandelier with your own hands: the rules and procedure for connecting a chandelier to a switch

In addition to the lamp itself, you will need a minimal set of tools and a bit of free time.

1. Prepare tools and materials

The necessary equipment is almost always found in any home. Here is the complete list:

  • chandelier;
  • stripper or knife - for stripping wires;
  • voltage indicator - to determine the phase;
  • multimeter - to check the circuit;
  • straight and Phillips screwdrivers - for mounting;
  • wago self-locking terminals - for connecting wires;
  • piece of wire - to support the chandelier during connection;
  • dowels or screws - for attaching a chandelier;
  • hammer drill - for drilling holes in concrete;
  •   or screwdriver - for screwdriving.

Wires inside the chandelier / atcharlotteshouse.com

If the lamp was not checked for operability in the store, before installing it is necessary to make sure that there is no short circuit and breakdown on the housing. Proceed as follows:

  • On the multimeter, set the ringing mode of the circuit.
  • In a chandelier with one lampshade there are two wires, touch them with the probes of the multimeter. If there is no sound signal, then everything is in order. If there is, somewhere in the circuit there is a short circuit. It is necessary to examine in detail all the contacts and eliminate the malfunction.
  • There are a lot of wires in a chandelier with several shades. Divide them by color into two groups. Read these bundles as two separate wires and test them with a multimeter, as described above.
  • If the lamp has a metal case, attach one multimeter probe to it, and with the second one touch each of the contacts inside the chandelier cartridges. There should be no signal. Otherwise, there is a breakdown and you need to look for which of the terminals touches the case. If the malfunction is not resolved, it may be when touching the chandelier during operation.

Three wires on the ceiling - the most common option / otlichnyjremont.ru

Now you need to find out which cable goes to the installation site of the chandelier. The connection scheme will depend on this. In principle, the number of cores can be judged by the keys of the switch:

  • One key - two wires.
  • Two keys - three wires.
  • Three keys - four wires.

To verify the exact number of wires, remove the cover of the old chandelier. Loosen the decorative mounting nuts and, holding the lamp, look at the cable. There can be two, three or four wires. If the chandelier is not yet installed, their number will immediately be visible.

4. Determine the phase and zero on the ceiling

  domovod.su

No matter how many wires, one will always be zero, and all the rest will be phase. Exception - if there is grounding, in this case another wire is added.

If everything is connected in accordance with the marking, then blue is zero, brown, red or white is phase, and yellow-green is grounding. But it’s better not to rely on colors, but to check the phase with an indicator screwdriver.

YouTube channel Krzysztof Klimas

  • Turn on all the keys on the switch.
  • Touch each wire end with a ferrule. At the phase indicator lights up, at zero - no.
  • Label the wires or remember which colors correspond to phase and which correspond to zero.

If there are two wires, then everything is simple: phase and zero. If three - one is exactly zero, but the rest are either two phases, or phase and ground. The latter option is rare. If four wires, as in the previous case, one of the wires is exactly zero, the others are either three phases, or two phases and ground.

5. Select a switching scheme

Depending on the number of phase conductors on the ceiling, one or more groups of lamps can be controlled. For each circuit there is a separate key on the switch.

Typically, the following types of switching are selected.

  • One phase wire - you can connect a single lamp. Or a chandelier with several shades, but they will all turn on simultaneously.
  • Two phase wires - you can connect a chandelier with several horns. Lampshades are divided into two equal groups or in such a way that the first button of the switch controls one lamp, and the second - all the others. For example, if there are five shades, then it is convenient to divide them into groups 1 + 4 or 2 + 3.
  • Three phase wires are the same principle as in the previous circuit. can be divided into three groups in any proportions and control them with the corresponding switch keys. For example, if a chandelier has six horns, it is convenient to divide by 2 + 2 + 2 or 1 + 2 + 3.

6. Connect the wires inside the chandelier

If you have the first circuit, then the wires are connected directly to the cable on the ceiling using self-clamping terminals: phase conductor with phase, zero - with zero.

In the second and third schemes, when the lamps are divided into several groups, the connection is carried out a little differently, but according to one principle:

  • Using the self-clamping terminals, connect the neutral wires of all the lamps into one group. Depending on the number of cores, a block for two or three sockets may be needed. Keep one of them free to connect to the cable on the ceiling, insert wires from the chandelier into the rest.
  • In the same way, connect the phase wires of the first group of lamps to each other.
  • Repeat the same for the remaining groups.

The mounting plate must be securely fastened.

  • In concrete floors - drill holes with a perforator, hammer in the dowels and fix the bar.
  • In drywall - wrap the plank screws in profile directly through the plate.
  • In stretch ceilings - fasten the mounting plate with screws to the embedded beam.

9. Connect the chandelier to the wiring on the ceiling

Pre-remove from the lamp so as not to break them. For ease of installation, temporarily suspend the chandelier with wire on the ceiling hook or mounting bracket.

How to connect a lamp with one lampshade

  • Connect the phase wires on the ceiling and in the chandelier to each other using a self-clamping terminal.
  • Similarly connect the neutral wires on the ceiling and the chandelier.

How to connect a chandelier with multiple shades

  • Insert the neutral wire on the ceiling into the remaining socket terminal of the zero wires of the chandelier.
  • Connect one of the phase conductors to the phase conductor terminal of the first group.
  • Repeat the previous step for the remaining lamp groups.
  • If the chandelier is metal and it has a clamping terminal for grounding, connect the yellow-green core to it (if it is on the ceiling).

10. Fasten the chandelier

  housemaster24.ru

It remains to remove the wire for temporary mounting and install the lamp. Proceed as follows:

  • Gently lay the wires inside the case.
  • Align the mounting holes with the screws on the mounting plate.
  • Screw the decorative nuts onto the screws.
  • Install shades on the chandelier if you removed them earlier.

11. Turn on the electricity

  glazovlife.ru

Apply voltage by turning on the switch in the electrical panel on the landing or in the apartment.

Alternately press all the switch keys. If everything is done correctly, the corresponding lamps in the chandelier will light up.

Before starting work on connecting the chandelier, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with its device.

Chandelier wire designation

The contacts for connecting to the wiring wires on the chandelier are indicated by the following Latin letters:

  • L  - phase
  • N  - zero wire
  • RE  - grounding conductor yellow green  colors.

They began to mark on chandeliers quite recently, and there may not be signs in chandeliers issued long ago. In this case, you have to understand yourself.

About connecting the ground wire in the chandelier

In modern chandeliers with metal fittings, a ground wire is installed yellow green  colors. The ground wire is indicated in Latin letters. RE. If the apartment has electrical wiring with a grounding wire (it must be yellow green, but can be of any color), then it also needs to be connected to the terminal to which it is connected yellow green  chandelier wire.

In houses of an old construction, apartment wiring is usually done without a grounding conductor. In old chandeliers or those whose fittings are made of plastic, there is also no grounding conductor. In such cases, the grounding conductor is not connected, it will not affect the performance of the chandelier, since it performs only a protective function.

In the photographs, the wires emerging from the ceiling and the chandelier are shown in white, and this is no accident. There is no single international standard for the color marking of wires in an electrical network, and even more so in chandeliers. And in Russia, the color marking of electrical wires has changed since January 1, 2011. Only PE grounding wire in the specifications of all countries is marked yellow-green  color.

Attention! Before connecting the chandelier, to prevent electric shock, it is necessary to disconnect the wiring. To do this, turn off the corresponding circuit breaker in the switchboard and check the reliability of the shutdown using the phase indicator.

Chandelier Connection Diagrams

Despite the variety of models, all chandeliers, including LED chandeliers with a remote control, are connected according to one of the schemes discussed below. To connect enough wires coming out of the ceiling should be correctly connected to the terminals of the terminal installed on the chandelier body. The work is simple and affordable for any home master, even without experience in electrics.

If 2 wires come out of the ceiling and the chandelier

The connection of one open-end chandelier, consisting of one light bulb, and a single-key switch in the wiring usually does not cause difficulties. It is enough two wires coming out of the ceiling to connect using any type of terminal block with wires coming out of the base of the chandelier.

Although, according to the requirements of the PUE, the twisting of wiring wires is currently prohibited, but in a hopeless situation, given the fact that the chandelier consumes low current, you can temporarily connect the chandelier by twisting, followed by isolation of the connection.

According to the requirements of the PUE, to increase operational safety, the phase wire must be connected to the central contact in the electrical cartridge, and the switch must open the phase wire. It is advisable to comply with this rule. But in practice, no one thinks about it, usually they connect a switch and a chandelier as necessary.

If 2 wires come out of the ceiling and the multi-track chandelier

If the chandelier has several horns, but only two wires come out of it, then all the bulbs inside the chandelier are connected in parallel, and such a chandelier is connected, according to the above diagram.

If 2 wires come out of the ceiling, 3 or more from the chandelier

Consider a more complex option for connecting a chandelier, the wires in it are connected to enable each bulb to be turned on separately. For our case, all pairs of wires from cartridges, regardless of their number, must be connected in parallel. One option is to install an additional jumper from the wire (in the photo is pink).

You can do without installing a jumper. It is enough to unscrew the screws at the first and third terminals, remove the wire coming from the left cartridge from the first terminal, and insert into the third, along with the right wire coming from the right cartridge.

If 3 wires come out of the ceiling, and 2 from the chandelier

Usually three wires come out of the ceiling in case a two-gang switch is installed. First of all, you need to deal with the wires coming out of the ceiling - to find a common wire. This is easy to do with a phase indicator.

To search for a common wire, you need to turn on both keys on the switch and sequentially touch each wire with a probe indicator. Depending on which wire the circuit breaker opens, phase or neutral, two indicator behavior are possible.

  • When you touch two wires there is a glow, but not the third. In this case, the wire on which there is no glow is common.
  • When you touch one of the wires there is a glow, to the other two not. Then the wire on which there is a glow is common.

Without a phase indicator, it is also easy to deal with the connection. It is necessary to connect any two wires from the ceiling to the chandelier and turn on both keys of the switch. If the light turns on, it means the connection is with a common wire and one of those coming from the switch. You can leave everything that way. If you want to understand the wires to the end, you need to bust to connect so that when both keys are turned on, the light does not light up. Thus, it will be possible to find the wires coming from the switch.

It remains to clamp the common wire and any other wire coming from the ceiling with a pair of chandelier wires in the terminal. If necessary, connect the chandelier so that the light turns on either of the two keys of the switch, then put a jumper (in the photo is pink) or clamp the wires that are connected by a jumper in the photo in one terminal. The jumper can be installed not in the terminal block, but in the switch.

If 3 wires come out of the ceiling, several

If you need to turn on not all the bulbs of the multi-track chandelier at the same time, but in groups, then the chandelier must be connected according to the above diagram. A prerequisite is the presence of a two-key switch. You need to connect a two- or three-arm chandelier according to the method described above. It is determined from three common wires emerging from the ceiling. One wire is connected to it from pairs coming from each chandelier holder.

The remaining two wires are connected to the remaining free conductors from pairs coming from the lampholders. It will be much easier to deal with the connection of a multi-track chandelier if you familiarize yourself with its device.

Connection diagram 2-3 chandeliers
  from single-key switch

In a large room, or if a suspended ceiling is installed, for good lighting, you have to install several chandeliers or spotlights mounted in the ceiling, which must be turned on simultaneously with one single-button switch.

Sometimes it is necessary to connect a switch so that it can turn on the light simultaneously in two, three or more rooms. In this case, chandeliers or lamps are connected in parallel, like several rounds in one chandelier, according to the following scheme.

Each chandelier in the diagram is connected to the switch through a separate junction box, but you can make all the connections in one junction box, it all depends on the layout of the wiring in the room. If there are many horns in each chandelier, then they are connected in parallel, as for the connection case discussed above, when two wires come out of the ceiling and three or more come out of the chandelier.

Three chandelier connection diagram
  from one three-key switch

If in one or several rooms it is necessary to turn on each chandelier separately from one three-key switch, then connect the chandeliers according to the diagram below.

This option for connecting fixtures is often used when controlling fixtures installed in the bathroom, toilet and kitchen. One three-key switch is installed in the corridor, and the corresponding chandelier is turned on before entering the room.

Chandelier Connection
to the block of switches Viko (Vico) with a socket

Sometimes an additional outlet is required next to the switch. If necessary, it is advisable to change the installed switch to a unit consisting of switches and sockets, for example Viko (Vico), shown in the photo. The switches for the chandelier in the block are from one key to four. So there is an opportunity to choose the right one. In the photo - a two-key unit with LED backlight and one outlet.

Connect the switch block with a socket to the chandelier according to the diagram below. As you can see, the circuit is not much different from connecting a chandelier to an ordinary switch, with the exception of an additional wire coming from the neutral wire to the left terminal of the outlet.

In the diagram, the connection of wires is given in accordance with the requirements of the PUE, in real wiring, zero and phase can be connected vice versa. If there was, for example, a two-gang switch, and a one-gang switch with a socket was needed, then you can not lay an additional wire, but use a free one by switching it to zero or phase in the junction box, depending on which wire comes to the switch.

Extension or extension of wires
  when connecting the chandelier

Now, when repairing apartments, they began to install suspended ceilings. Stretch is especially popular. They have a magnificent appearance, practically do not wear out, come in any colors with a glossy and matte surface, are not afraid of water. Stretch ceilings are installed at a distance of 5-10 cm below the existing plane of the ceiling, so the length of the conductors to connect the fixtures becomes insufficient. It is required to increase their length.

The complexity of the task lies in the fact that it will be impossible to get to the place of splicing wires to connect a chandelier or other lamps after installing the ceiling without dismantling it. So, the connection must be made in the most reliable way. Connecting wires in hard-to-reach places using a terminal block is not a reliable type of connection. The screws in the terminal block may loosen over time and will need to be tightened.

In the article “Connection of wires broken in the wall” in the article, the methods of connecting aluminum and copper wires to each other are discussed in detail in the photos, which are also suitable for lengthening the wires for connecting a chandelier or other lamps. For a reliable connection when building aluminum wires with copper, I recommend reading the article "How to connect aluminum wires." To extend the wires for connecting the chandelier to a suspended ceiling, one of the methods described in the article is suitable, on a thread or an integral rivet.

Wire cross section for connecting a chandelier

If six hundred-watt incandescent bulbs designed for a supply voltage of 220 V are installed in the chandelier, then the consumption current will not exceed 3 A. Such a current can withstand a copper conductor with a cross section of 0.5 mm 2, and standard apartment wiring is usually made with wires with a cross section of at least 2.5 mm 2. So when you connect a chandelier with light bulbs to a voltage of 220 V, you don’t have to think about the cross section of the wire. When connecting a chandelier with LED lamps, you can also not worry about the wire cross section.

When you connect a chandelier or fixtures with halogen bulbs to a voltage of 12 V, the consumption current becomes much larger, and the wire cross section in the wiring section from the step-down transformer or adapter to the chandelier lamps must be calculated using the online calculator below and check its compliance.

The current consumption of which is ten times less than that of incandescent lamps.

The chandelier is a lamp mounted on the ceiling. For uniform lighting, it is usually mounted in the center of the room. Today, manufacturers offer chandeliers with a different number of lamps, for example with three or five. To connect such chandeliers, a double (two-key) switch is often used. Thanks to the connection to a double switch, it becomes possible to adjust the illumination in the room. Those. You can separately turn on the first and second group of lamps, or you can turn on both groups simultaneously.

The general scheme for connecting to a double switch is as follows: phase and neutral wires, usually laid from a common shield with automatic devices, are fed into the junction box. From the junction box, the neutral wire goes directly to the chandelier, and the phase wire goes to the common contact of the double switch. Two wires go out of the switch to the chandelier.

According to the new requirements, in addition to the phase and neutral wires, a protective PE conductor (ground) must be used, which is necessary for grounding the metal housings of electrical equipment.

The chandelier can be connected completely from scratch, or if there is already wiring, a junction box and a switch are installed.

Training

Connection from scratch involves several stages of electrical work. First, a place is chosen for mounting the junction box. Connecting (transitional) box should be in the upper part of the wall near the ceiling. The shape of the box can be selected round or square. Then a place for a double switch is selected. It is desirable to place it in the room itself right at the entrance. As for the chandelier, it is hung on a special hook in the central part of the ceiling.

Wiring

After the places for the box and the circuit breaker are determined, the route for laying the wires is prepared. Strobing is carried out in the wall and in the ceiling plate from the junction box to the switch and to the chandelier. Strobing is also carried out from the common shield to the junction box.

After the gating work, the junction box is mounted. Then the wires are laid along the entire route. Three wires go from the common shield to the junction box (common zero, common phase and common ground). Next, from the box, zero and ground are laid directly to the chandelier, and the phase wire is led to the place where the double switch will be installed. Two phase wires should go from the double switch, which go first to the junction box, and then from the box to the chandelier (into two groups of lamps).

Switch connection

After laying the wires, a double switch is connected. The phase wire from the box is connected to the common contact of the double switch. Two outgoing wires going through the box to the chandelier are connected to the output contacts of the switch. It should be noted that the function of the indoor switch is a phase break. In no case should you connect zero to the switch.

Chandelier Connection

In order to connect a chandelier, you first need to conditionally divide all its lamps into groups. For example, if there are three lamps in a chandelier, the first group will be with one lamp, and the second with two. If a chandelier with five lamps, then there are two options for dividing into groups.

  • The first method (the most commonly used) is the first group with two lamps, the second group with three.
  • The second method is the first group with one lamp, the second group with four. You can choose any option at will.

After dividing the lamps into groups, the connection is made in the chandelier itself. To begin with, one nuance of connecting wires in lamp holders should be noted. The phase wire must be connected to the central contact of the cartridge, and the neutral wire is connected to the side contact. Then all the neutral wires from all the chandelier cartridges are connected together and connected to the neutral wire, which is connected from the junction box.

As for the phase wires, the individual groups are connected separately from each other. Those. phase wires coming out of the cartridges of the first group are interconnected, and phases from the cartridges of the second group are also interconnected, but separately from the phase wires of the first group. Then, the connected phases of the first and second groups of the chandelier are connected to the phase wires of the double switch going through the junction box. The first group is to one wire, the second to the other wire from the switch.

If grounding is provided in the chandelier, then the protective PE wire from the box must be connected to a special grounding contact.

Connection in junction box

After connecting and connecting the wires in the chandelier and the switch, all the wires in the junction box are connected. The common zero from the shield is connected to the neutral wire going to the chandelier, the protective PE conductor is connected to the ground, which also goes to the chandelier. The common phase from the shield is connected to the phase wire to the switch. The output wires from the switch are connected to the phase wires going to each group of the chandelier.

The last step is to connect the common zero, phase and ground in the shield. The phase is connected to the circuit breaker, zero to the zero terminal, PE conductor to the ground bus. After that, voltage is applied by turning on the circuit breaker, and then the double switch is turned on and the presence of light is checked.

It often happens that you need to connect a new chandelier to the old place. In this case, a double switch is already installed, a junction box is located under the ceiling, the wires are already laid, and to connect the chandelier it is enough to determine where which wire is.

  • The easiest way- This is to separate all the wires coming from the ceiling in different directions and turn on both keys of the double switch. Using the indicator, determine which wires have voltage. A wire on which there will be no voltage is zero, the other two are phases.
  • Second way - This is the ringing of all wires. To do this, you have to disassemble the switch itself, and sometimes open the junction box.

The connection of the chandelier and the double switch must be done only when the voltage is off.

Before you start connecting the chandelier, you need to examine its structure.

If only 2 wires protrude from the chandelier and ceiling, then no special difficulties with the connection are expected. But a more intricate option is when you need to carry out this procedure, having the ability to connect to two identical switches, if 3 wires protrude from the chandelier and ceiling. That is, the light bulb, or their group, is turned on separately. The result is a picture: a certain number of wires protrude from this ceiling, and also from a chandelier - what needs to be connected? To understand this, in the provided article, a detailed diagram of the connection of the chandelier will be displayed.

The main contacts, in order to conduct electrical wiring, have their own designation - these are the letters of the Latin alphabet:

L - This is the phase designation,

N - wire zero,

PE is a grounding conductor with a yellow-green color.

Marking chandeliers with markings began not so long ago, therefore, in these devices of earlier production, it is absent. Then you have to figure it out on your own.

How to connect the ground wire to the chandelier

In lighting fixtures of modern manufacture, with the presence of metal fittings, a special ground wire is installed, which has a yellow-green color. This wire is designated - RE. If the room wiring is made with such a wire, by the way, it may have a different shade, then it must be connected to the terminal. The terminal, in turn, is connected to the wire of the chandelier (yellow-green). In most rooms, electrical wiring is done without a grounding conductor. In old lighting fixtures, or in those in which the fixtures are made of plastic, this conductor is also missing. Then do not connect the grounding conductor, and this absolutely does not affect the functioning of the chandelier. Grounding has an exclusively protective function. In the event that the insulation of the phase wiring is frayed and it touches the chandelier armature (metal), then when you touch your hand to individual metal sections of the device, an electric shock may occur.

When photographs of the wire that comes from the chandelier and the ceiling are depicted, then there it is white. This is not a coincidence. There is no one established world standard for color marking of wires in the electric network, and even more so in lighting fixtures. In the Russian state, the color marking of the wire has changed since January 1, 2011. Each individual country has its own labeling. The only thing is that the PE ground wire is marked in all countries with a standard color - yellow-green.

Chandelier connection diagram when two separate wires come from the chandelier and the ceiling

Connecting one carob chandelier from a single lamp and one keyboard switch, basically, is not a big deal.   It will be sufficient, 2 wires that come out of the ceiling, to connect to each other using the terminal, Wago,
  as well as terminal blocks.
You can also make the connection using twist with two separate wires coming from the lighting device.

The requirements set out in the PUE state that the phase wire is required to connect to the central contact in the cartridge. The switch, in this case, must make the phase wiring open. This is to increase operational safety. Recommend to follow this rule. But in reality, in practical work, few people think about this. In most cases, the switch and the lighting device are connected very carelessly.

Connection diagram of one chandelier, when two wires exit the ceiling, and three or more from the chandelier

If one chandelier has two or more lamps, and an existing switch with one key, then it is quite possible to connect this lighting device in three versions:

- when the switch turns on, then all the lamps light up immediately;

- a switch with several keys, you can turn on each of the lamps individually, a lot of carob chandeliers;

- a switch with several keys, you can turn on whole groups of lamps, for example, in the chandelier of a three-horn two-key switch can operate either one lamp, or two, or all available at the same time.

If only 2 wires protrude from the ceiling, then the lighting device can be connected according to the first option - all lamps at the same time. Connecting one chandelier is carried out depending on how the manufacturer connected the wires, from the cartridges. Basically, chandeliers, with a certain number of shades, contain paired wire connections from the shades and then the connection is made as described above.

The following is an even more complex diagram of the connection of the chandelier. The wiring in the chandelier is connected so that each lamp turns on separately. In this case, it is necessary to connect all the available pairs of wires from the cartridges in parallel. It does not depend on their number. There is some option - the installation of an additional jumper from the wiring.

You do not have to install a jumper, it will be delivery only by unscrewing the screws in the first and third terminals, pull out the wire passing through the left cartridge from the initial terminal, and insert the third one securely into the terminal, together with the wire coming from the cartridge on the right side.

Scheme for connecting a lighting device with two separate wires, with the presence of three wires coming from the ceiling

In most cases, three separate wires emanate from the ceiling when there is a two-key switch. Here you should first deal with the wiring - find the common main wire. This action is easy to implement when there is a phase indicator.

To start the search for this main wire, turn on the two available keys and, in order, touch each wire using a screwdriver indicator.   There are two types of behavior of this indicator, depending on the particular wire (zero or phase), which is opened by the switch:

- when touching two separate wires, there is a glow, to the third - is absent. Consequently, a wire without a glow is common;

- when you touch one of these wires, the glow is present, and the other two are absent. Then, the wire with the glow is common.

If there is no phase indicator, then you can also easily figure out the connection features. To do this, connect any two wires coming from the ceiling to the chandelier and turn on two keys in the switch. If a glow appears, it means that a connection has been obtained with the common wire, and also with one wire coming from the switch. So everything can remain. If you want to understand all the wires to the end, then you need to connect in such a way that the light does not appear even when the two keys in the switch are turned on. Then it turns out to find the wires coming from the switch.

Diagram for connecting a single chandelier with several wires, and with three wires from the ceiling

If you need to make sure that not all lamps are turned on in the chandelier at the same time, but only in groups, this lighting fixture should be connected according to the provided diagram. A switch with two keys must be present. Connect one chandelier, but two and three carob, it is necessary according to the method described slightly above. Of the three wires emanating from the ceiling, one common main wire stands out. Then, one separate wire from those pairs that come from each of the cartridges is connected to it.

The two remaining wires are connected to the free wires of the pairs that come from the cartridges in the chandelier.

How to successfully connect two or three chandeliers from a single-key switch

If a suspended ceiling is mounted in a huge room, then in order to provide perfect lighting, a certain number of chandeliers must be placed. It can also be halogen lamps or LED lamps, which must be turned on with a one-key switch. This is a simultaneous action. In some cases, it is necessary to connect this switch so that with its help it becomes possible to turn on the lighting simultaneously in several rooms (two, three or more). Then, chandeliers and other lamps are connected in parallel, as well as a certain number of cartridges in the chandelier.

The connection diagram of the chandelier then consists in the following. Each of the chandeliers is connected to the switch through a separate distribution box. But it becomes possible to implement all available connections in a single box. Here a lot depends on the proposed scheme for conducting electricity in the room. If there are many horns in the chandeliers, then they are connected in parallel, as in the situation described earlier. This is a situation when two separate wires come from the ceiling, and from the chandelier there are three or more.

Scheme for connecting three lighting devices, from a single switch to three keys

If in one separate room, or even in several similar ones, it will be necessary to turn on each separately a lighting device, from a single switch with three keys, then it is necessary to connect these devices according to the provided scheme.

This option of connecting fixtures is used very often when controlling these fixtures. They can be installed in the kitchen room, bathroom and toilet. In the corridor one switch for three keys is installed, and just before the entrance to this room it is planned to turn on the corresponding lighting device.

Scheme for connecting the chandelier to the block of special switches with the presence of a Viko outlet

Not always, but in some situations, it is required that along with the switch there is an additional functioning outlet. If such a need arose, it would be logical to replace the switch already installed earlier with a separate unit containing the switch and a socket. For example, a socket is possible like Viko. This unit has switches for the chandelier from one to four keys. Therefore, there is a good opportunity to choose the one that is needed. The photo shows a block with two keys, with the presence of LED backlighting and one outlet. Making a connection with the presence of a backlight is almost no different from connecting the same switch, but without the corresponding backlight.

Connect the switch block with the socket to the lighting device must be strictly in accordance with the scheme provided. This circuit is not very different from the circuit of connecting one chandelier to a standard switch. The only slight difference is that an additional wire comes from the zero wire, which is directed to the left outlet of the outlet.

The connection diagram of the chandelier, shows the wiring connection, which is carried out according to the penalties of the PUE. In reality, zero, as well as phase, can connect the other way around. For example, if a switch with two keys was connected, and you just need a one-key with a socket, then it is quite possible not to lay an additional wire. You can use the free one, and subsequently switch it in the distribution box to a zero indicator or phase. It all depends on what type of wire passes to this switch.

Extension or extension of wiring during the connection of one chandelier

Currently, during the restoration of the premises they began to install suspended ceilings. Especially widespread. They look beautiful, do not give in to wear, are durable, come in various shades, as well as with the surface. They are quite waterproof. Stretch ceilings are installed at a distance below the existing ceiling plane (50-10cm). For this reason, there is not enough length of the existing conductors in order to connect the lighting fixtures. It is necessary to increase their length.

The complexity of such a task is as follows. It is almost impossible to get to the place where the wires are connected when connecting the chandelier and other lamps, after the installation is completed. This suggests that such a connection should be provided so that it is optimally reliable. If the wires are connected using a terminal block
in particularly hard-to-reach areas, this is a very unreliable type of connection. Over time, the screws located in the block loosen, and you need to tighten them a little.

Cross section for connecting one chandelier

Lamps are not of great power in the chandelier. Even if it contains six standard incandescent bulbs, as well as one hundred watt halogen ones that count on voltages up to 220V, then the current consumption with all the lamps turned on will be no more than 3A. A copper conductor with a cross section of 0.5 mm square can withstand the current of this indicator. It is known that ordinary apartment electrical wiring is made by wires having a cross section of no less than 2.5 mm square. And this, in turn, allows you to connect one chandelier to the electrical wiring of aluminum wires. The total power consumption of their lamps is 2000 watts. Therefore, when connecting any chandelier with lamps for voltage up to 220V, the question of the cross-section of the wiring is not worth it.

During the connection of one chandelier, as well as devices with halogen lamps for voltage up to 12V, the current consumed by the chandelier increases much. The cross-section of the wiring in the wiring zone from the step-down transformer or adapter to the chandelier itself should be calculated and checked. It is necessary to determine how suitable the section of the laid wiring to the resulting value.

If a lamp or chandelier uses a lot of current, then you need to think about replacing incandescent lamps with modern type of lighting sources, convenient fluorescent lamps or LED lamps. The current consumed by the latter is ten times less than incandescent bulbs.

When buying a new lamp, few people think about how to connect a chandelier, how many drives are there and which switch is needed? In the store, the seller gave recommendations on caring for the lighting fixture, read the manufacturer’s advertising by heart and the purchase is considered complete. But, having come home, having unpacked the lighting device, wires of different colors are found. How to be What to do?

After all, the store said that in the chandelier it is possible to turn on only two lamps, and not all five, and it connects to a single-key switch. This article covers all connection options, as well as security measures.

Safety precautions

Before you start connecting the chandelier to the mains, install a switch, you need to familiarize yourself with the safety precautions in working with electricity. For this, it is not required to study the Talmuds of the “Physics of Electricity”, it is worth familiarizing yourself with the rules:

  1. In all used tools for working with electrical appliances, as well as for wiring, the handles are insulated.
  2. For work, electricity in the entire room is turned off on the shield. To do this, turning off the light switch is not enough. It is required to disconnect the plugs on the electrical panel (meter in a private house), if there are no buttons there, the plugs are twisted.
  3. The switch for the luminaire is installed in the wire break "phase".

If you follow these rules, then life will not be in danger.

  Checking wires with an indicator

How to recognize wires?

All wires are available in several colors. This greatly facilitates the work of an electrician, and gives a hint to a beginner.

Generally accepted standard:

  • Grounding - a yellow wire with a light green stripe (ground).

Attention! It is not used to connect electrical devices. This is only grounding (so that during the operation of the appliance the current does not break through "small trembling").

  • The blue (cyan) wire is zero.
  • Phase are other colors than those listed.

In the houses and apartments with the old wiring, all cables are the same, there was no grounding. To determine the type you should make a call.

What threatens to interchange the phase and zero?

There is an opinion from people who consider themselves to be professionals (I installed 1 outlet in the house) that when installing the switch there is no difference in connecting the wires, because through open contacts electricity does not enter the lamp. This is not true. You should know exactly what is the phase, and which wire is “zero”. When a zero is broken, an electric current does not flow, but a phase current is present in all cables. What threatens a person with electric shock. Otherwise, fluorescent lighting fixtures, as well as "economy" lamps, flicker or shine weakly with phase current.

How to connect the wires?

Twisting is a very painstaking business. If it is done incorrectly, an alteration is made. Therefore, it should be done correctly, as well as firmly isolate it. If there are a lot of such twists, and in the network a large voltage or a bad contact of the connection is heated, then the electrical tape will soon burn out, which will lead to a short circuit. Therefore, when twisting the wires, it is necessary to press and insulate them well.

Now terminal blocks are used. They have established themselves as fire fighting elements. With their help, four or more twists are connected. One of them are WAGO. No tools are required for the connection, installation takes place in a short time. First, the levers open, insert the wires there and close the lever. In this case, the connection will be reliable, fireproof. The purchased new chandelier is disassembled, the quality of the pads and screws is checked. If necessary, tighten the screws well. Especially if the chandelier is made in China.

The most convenient way to use terminal blocks is

Required Chandelier Mounting Tool

In order to connect the chandelier to the wires on the ceiling, you will need tools:

  1. Three different screwdrivers: flat end, curly, indicator.
  2. Side cutter and pliers.
  3. Knife - must be sharpened.
  4. Voltmeter.
  5. Insulating tape.

A knife is required to expose the single-core wire, because the pliers will damage or break the core itself. Exposure is done with a sharp blade of a knife, just like a pencil is sharpened. If there are barbs - it does not threaten anything.

An indicator is needed to search for a phase. In such a screwdriver, the tip is made to tighten the screws. This is not necessary, because it is impractical and will soon break.

There are 2 types of measuring instruments: with a digital screen and with arrows. Digital is preferred because their readings are most accurate. Digital shockproof devices have overload protection. The dial gauge is used in horizontal position. Its dignity - shows the measurement without additional power (batteries, batteries).

Attention! In all devices, the AC range is not more than 500–600 watts.

To connect the lighting device to the mains, you need to perform a step-by-step algorithm of actions with detailed instructions.

Preparatory work: ringing - phase determination on the ceiling

At this stage of preparation, it will be clarified what to do with the ground wire and how to distinguish phase and zero on the ceiling? How to connect a multitude of wires from a chandelier to cables on a ceiling? Connecting a lighting fixture with your own hands is a neat thing, requiring minimal knowledge of electricity.

The indicator will help you find the cable you need.

Ground wire

If the wiring has already been done on the ceiling (the wiring is done, say, under a drywall in a frame basis), then among them there is a “zero”, the rest are phase and ground.

Attention! Wiring with grounding made in new buildings and in the premises with the repair.

The ground wire is yellow-green. According to the international standard is designated PE. It connects to the same color wire on the chandelier. You can’t just leave the wire, as this can lead to a short circuit. If there is grounding in the chandelier, and the wiring is old on the ceiling, then PE insulation must be made in the chandelier. Grounding insulation is carried out on the ceiling, if it is not in the chandelier. Insulation is done neatly and efficiently with insulation tape. It is not permissible for the edge of the tape to stick out or peel off.

  Proper isolation

Looking for phase and zero

All wires are checked - you need to determine where the phase and zero. You can not rely only on the color scheme for several reasons. Firstly, it is not known (in many cases) how the wires were connected to the junction box - the qualification of an electrician or a neighbor; secondly, the color gamut can change, and if a person is sure that the phase is red in color, then this opinion may be wrong.

If only three wires come out of the ceiling, a switch with 2 keys is installed, then there can be two power wires, for each section of the switch, and one zero is common. The dialing is done using a multimeter (tester), an indicator.

The following is required for dialing:

  1. Shoes with rubber soles. To be in a dry room. Hands and feet should also be dry. Water is a current conductor.
  2. The voltage on the meter or panel turns on, and put the switch in the “on” mode.
  3. Carefully, so that the wires do not touch each other (so as not to burn all the wiring in the house), follow the indicator, with the edge of the screwdriver, touch each one in turn. If the screwdriver ignites, there is voltage.
  4. When connecting a measuring device, the tester will show, with an arrow or numbers on the display, what voltage is in the wire.
  5. To be sure (if the memory is bad), a phase is marked with a marker or everything is written on paper - what color.
  6. After detecting the phase, the switch turns off, and after that the apartment is de-energized on the electrical panel or on the meter.

To determine the wires by the tester, it is required to set the switch on the device to “volts”, select the scale “greater than 220 V”. After that, carefully touch the probes, hold it by the handle, and not by the bare iron, to the wiring in stages, and not immediately to everyone. Two supply wires between each other do not give a call. If there is such a pair, then these are phase wires. And the third is zero. Further, each wire, the alleged phase, is required to be connected with probes to zero. 220 V is detected on the screen of the tester. The cables should be marked with a marker on insulation or the colors recorded. Working with the indicator is easier: glows - phase, no - zero (indicated by the letter N). Phase - Letter L.

If there are only 2 wires in the ceiling, one of them is definitely a phase. The switch is single-key, and if there is a second, then it is inoperative.

Chandelier Connection Diagrams

The market offers a large number of chandeliers that amaze with their beauty and extraordinary.

  • Chandelier with one cartridge.
  • With a rotating platform.
  • With a large number of halogen and LED sources.
  • There are models with built-in dimmers, drivers that allow you to turn on the lighting device with the remote control. And also with the help of the remote control, the brightness of the light and the sequence of the lamps are changed.

But, despite such an extensive classification of chandelier models, they will all be connected according to the schemes below.

One of the main nuances is the correct connection of cables on the ceiling with wires from the chandelier. With the necessary tools, the connection is made quickly by a person who does not have experience in working with electrical devices.

  Chandelier Connection Diagram

If the switch is single, and the two-wire chandelier (for example, arion or sconce), then you need to perform the steps according to the chandelier scheme - 2x2 ceiling. That is, there is a two-wire cable on the ceiling. This option is quick and easy. After the phase and zero are determined, the power is turned off. The zero wire on the chandelier (you can find this out from the instructions for the lighting device, by color) must be connected to the desired "zero" on the ceiling. It is also done with the "phase". All connected wires must be properly insulated. There is no difficulty, installation is quick.

If the chandelier is five-arm or three-arm, and the switch with one key, then it follows:

  1. Consider all the wires in the chandelier. 2 wires come out of each horn. This means that phase and zero are connected to each. Then all the lights come on.
  2. Preparing wires for connection to general house wiring. Each wire on the chandelier is exposed by 3 cm. Since they are very thin, everything should be done carefully. Next, all wires of the same color are taken (for example, blue) and twisted into one group. Twisted one vein from each cartridge. The same twist is done with the remaining wires of a different color.
  3. It turned out 2 twists - zero will fit on one, and phase on the second. After that, the indicator checks the closed circuit of the cartridge - twist.
  4. Two twists of wires are fixed to 2 wires on the ceiling. Be sure to apply electrical tape.

Attention! Do not connect aluminum and copper wires. These 2 metals oxidize over time and the contact disappears. There are special adapters for this.

  Connecting a chandelier to a single-key switch

The chandelier has 2 wires, 3 wires on the ceiling (double switch)

There are 2 options here: the third wire is grounding or the second phase, with a 2-button switch. In this situation, you need to do this:

  1. Be sure to dial using the indicator. With such work, the network must be electric current, and the switch is on. Otherwise, the indicator will not show the second phase. Indicator Behavior:
  • The first case is when, when touching the screwdriver, 2 wires give illumination to the indicator, and the third does not light. This is a common wire.
  • The second case - one is lit, and the other 2 are not. The wire that gives the glow is common.

If there is no indicator, then any 2 cables from the ceiling are taken and connected to the chandelier. The electricity on the shield and the switch are turned on. If the lamps come on, the installation is proceeding correctly. And there is no need to redo further.

  1. Indicate phases and zero, if they are the same color, turn off the power on the counter.
  2. After that, the common wire and one of the remaining two to choose from are fixed in the terminal. Also connect the wires from the chandelier. Exposure is necessarily isolated.
  3. If there is a desire for the chandelier to light up from either of the two keys on the switch, a jumper is set.

After complete isolation, the power is turned on and operation is checked.

If the switch is two-gang, and the five-lamp chandelier, then:

  1. In the chandelier, 2 wires come out of each horn with a lamp.
  2. Everything is collected in one bundle and divided into groups (double): 2 feeding, 1 zero. One color - 1 group. The rest coming out are divided into groups scatter.
  3. All groups of wires are twisted with those marked on the ceiling.

Connecting a three-wire chandelier to a multi-key switch

  Wiring diagram for multi-key switch

If the chandelier is two-arm and more, then connection options are possible:

  • If you turn on the switch - all the lights come on.
  • With a single key, a group of bulbs on the chandelier is switched on (for example, the lower cartridges in a multi-tier lamp).
  • With a single key, 2-3 lamps are lit, but not all.

There are 2 wires on the ceiling, which means that only the first option is possible - all the lamps will light up simultaneously. To connect a chandelier with three wires to 2 on the ceiling, you should carefully study the technical characteristics of the chandelier. Basically, the manufacturing plant all the threads in the chandelier are connected in pairs. In this case, the connection occurs in an elementary way: finding the phase and zero, and connecting the chandelier.

If each wire in the chandelier comes from the ceiling, then all the wires are connected in parallel by installing an additional jumper wire.

Connection diagram of a chandelier with several wires to a three-wire cable on the ceiling

If it is necessary to turn on the lamps in groups in a three-lamp chandelier (five-cartridge carol), then the connection is carried out according to the scheme. In this case, a two- or three-key switch is installed. For this, the common wire, zero, phase in the three-wire cable is determined by the indicator on the ceiling. At the same time, a switch for at least 2 keys is installed for everyone. To the common wire is connected 1 wire of their pair, coming from each horn of the chandelier.

There will be 2 threads connecting to the free wires of the pairs of cartridges.

Attention! Before installing a multi-horn chandelier to a multi-key (triple) switch, you need to carefully study the lighting device, its technical characteristics and instructions for use.

Connecting the chandelier to the switch unit with a socket

In some cases, installing an outlet and a switch nearby (this is often found in the kitchen). These two points change to one - anam-socket-switch unit. In this case, the switch has from one key to four. Acting according to the scheme, which indicates the normal connection of the chandelier to the switch, installation will be quick. In the circuit there is one wire that goes out of "zero" and enters the outlet of the outlet. The scheme is classical, but in practice, zero and phase are often interchanged.

LED Chandelier

It stands out because a typical spotlight contains additional elements for the smooth operation laid down by the manufacturer. These elements are: dimmers, drivers, converters. The control of turning on the light comes from the remote control.

A passport is attached to the chandelier, indicating options for work, technical specifications, as well as with an electrical circuit for connecting it to the mains. When connecting the chandelier, accurate work is required according to the diagram given in the passport, otherwise it will work incorrectly or burn out. After connecting the lighting device to the network, adjustment and verification are carried out using a switch and a remote control.
