  Drawings of ships from plywood: materials, preparation for work, cutting and assembling parts, final finishing. Sailing ships, model drawings free download Models of warships do-it-yourself drawings

In modeling, plywood is the most demanded material. This is due to high quality indicators, as well as ease of operation. Plywood sheets are very easy to cut, quite simply processed. Using a suitable scheme (drawing), you can make ships from plywood with your own hands.

Plywood is a versatile material that is easily cut and processed in various ways, therefore it is recommended to begin your acquaintance with modeling with plywood patterns.

Designing a ship yourself is quite an interesting activity. But in order to proceed with the implementation of complex models, it is necessary to practice the lighter ones.

Materials and Tools

To create stucco patterns on board a ship, you need to prepare your own composition, from which reliefs can be formed. For the solution, it is necessary to prepare the following tools and materials:

  • wood dust;
  • pVA glue (on average, one model of a ship can take about half a liter of glue);
  • plasticine to create small irregularities and patterns;

Materials and tools that are used during the simulation of the ship:

Birch plywood will provide a minimum number of chips when sawing.

  • plywood of the required thickness;
  • super glue;
  • sandpaper for surface treatment;
  • kapron thread;
  • jigsaw for cutting parts;
  • construction knife;
  • wood for the mast. It is better to use pine, as it is much easier to process;
  • paint;
  • small brushes;
  • chinese chopsticks;
  • fabric for sails;
  • a thread;
  • pencil ruler.

Wood for modeling should be used soft, not fibrous. The most popular option is cedar, linden, walnut. All wooden blanks should be perfectly flat, without knots and damage. It can be used as an additional element to create decorative parts. Also, wood can be used to create the basic elements of the model, such as deck, hull.

Plywood in modeling is the most demanded material.  In such a direction as modeling, birch or balsa plywood is most often used. This is due to the fact that these types of wood practically do not give chips during sawing. To make a boat out of plywood, it is necessary to use sheets with a thickness in the range of 0.8-2 mm.

A simple diagram of a plywood ship model.

Veneer - a sheet material, very thin, made from valuable wood species. In most cases, veneer is used as a facing material. They paste over products that are made of inexpensive material.

Fasteners will perform not only the main task of fastening the parts, but also perform a decorative role. To create a model of a boat, it is necessary to prepare thin chains (several sizes can be used), laces, threads, copper or brass studs. In order to transfer a drawing from a sheet to plywood, it is best to use tracing paper and a pencil. So the drawing will turn out detailed. To fasten plywood parts, glue must be used. Fine detailing can be made by metal casting, use polymer clay, or independently prepare a solution of wood dust and PVA glue. After complete drying, such a mass is very durable, and it can be painted in the desired color.

Preparatory work

If the ship is modeled for the first time from plywood, it is recommended to purchase kits in which all the parts are already cut and processed. But its cost can sometimes be quite high. Therefore, with great desire and effort, experience can be gained in the process of assembling your ship. Modeling, like another kind of work, necessarily begins with the preparatory stage. The first thing you need to start work with is which ship will be modeled. To begin with, it is worth looking at the various drawings and finished work, this will greatly facilitate the choice of model.

Having fully studied the drawing, it is worth checking the presence of all necessary materials  and tools to do the job. Modeling ships is a jewel business. It takes a lot of time and perseverance.

At the preparatory stage, it is necessary to make paper or cardboard templates of all the details. After that, they are all transferred to plywood. At this preparatory stage of work can be considered completed.

Parts manufacturing

In order to make all the details, cut them out of the plywood sheet, you must use the appropriate tool. For work, you can use hand jigsawbut, if possible, it is better to use an electric model option. Using the second option will significantly reduce the time for manufacturing all the elements. This is especially true for the smallest details.

Sawed blanks are processed with a file, removing chips and burrs.

In order to cut the part, a hole is made in plywood, in which a jigsaw file is located. Cutting out all the details is very careful, observing all the contour boundaries, since inaccurately cut parts can then spoil the appearance of the entire ship. Each sawn blank must be filed with ends. In the process of such stripping, it is necessary to remove a small part of the chamfer where chips and burrs formed. When cutting, this moment cannot be avoided.

The ship must be assembled when all the details are cut out and the ends are processed. This will allow you to engage in assembly work, without being distracted by cutting out the missing parts.

The element of water at all times attracted desperate travelers, brave sailors and fearless pirates. Sailing along the waves and watching how new horizons open before you is the most amazing thing that can happen in life. In order to go sailing you need to build a ship with your own hands. Let it not be as huge as the Titanic, the main thing is that you created it yourself.

Everyone probably has (or had) a favorite business, which is not a pity to devote free time. Someone has a collection of stamps, someone is involved in photography, someone likes to cook, knit, draw, ... and so on, you will not list everything.
  One of my favorite things, or more simply hobbies, are. This news is dedicated to them.

After that, you can leave the "skeleton" to dry and do the coating of the deck.
  Everything is not so simple as it seems from the outside - the coating boards should be laid in a certain pattern. You can, of course, simply lay down long planks, but it will look rather rude ...

After this, the decks (or the deck, if it is one) are put in their place and the first hull begins. Usually the model of the ship is covered twice - the first skin is draft, it is made of very soft wood.
  One after another, the planks are attached to the "skeleton" with glue and small cloves, which are removed when the glue dries.

The work is delicate, the strips are not always easily bent and can break.

After painstaking work, the entire body is covered with the first layer!

Now you need to close the gaps between the slats and how to sand it.

Then you can proceed to the face skin. You need to be extremely careful with it - the slats are much thinner than draft ones and easily break.

The technology is the same - glue and cloves.

You can imagine the amount of work (the ship in the photo, Victory, 1300 mm long.) ...

I described the assembly of the HMS Victory model in 17 reviews, everyone who wants to read it - welcome!

And this is a model of probably the most famous ship in the world - “Santa Maria” (in the assembly process, of course).

After the second cladding is finished and sanded, you can varnish everything. And then we will take up the deck - ladders, boats, hatches, ...
  Almost all parts are made of wood and brass. There is no plastic in principle.

Detailing the exterior is equally important.
  Well, after the hull is finished, we proceed to the rigging.
  But before that you need to install masts and yards.

Each knot is tied up with hands (the very nautical knots :-).
  And these nodules are just countless!
Sails need to be pre-flashed. Santa Maria still had to color them.

If the stand is not included in the set, then here you can give free rein to your imagination.
  For example, I made a stand for Santa Maria from a piece of oak flooring.

And only when the very last knot is tied, can the ship be considered ready!
  You can proudly put it on the most prominent and enthusiastic "Wow!" guests, looking down, say "Yes, I did it myself ...".

Wooden ships and sailboats

For many, prefabricated ship models are more than just a hobby and an interesting activity. This is, above all, the opportunity for self-expression, a way to realize your talents and, at the same time, be distracted and indulge in dreams. Regardless of whether it’s a battle ship, a modern yacht, or a military galleon, each ship represents all the power and magnificence of the sea.
  Table wooden ships have excellent decorative qualities, it is impossible not to admire them. Therefore, wooden models of ships always become a worthy decoration of any room, whether it be a study or home living room.

To work on each model of the ship you will need enviable patience and accuracy. But, the result of hard work is the assembled model, which will become a well-deserved subject of your pride.

You can create a model of an old ship yourself without buying a ready-made design for assembly. To get a high-quality result, you will have to show a lot of patience and perseverance.

Materials

To make a historic ship with your own hands, prepare:

  • plywood or cork;
  • thin strips of wood, bamboo or rattan;
  • wood glue;
  • paper;
  • pencil.

In this model of the ship, not plywood, but cork wood was used as the basis. The choice was due to the simplicity of working with the material. Unlike plywood, where you need a saw for trimming, with a cork tree, everything turned out to be a simple sharp knife. You can also take thin strips for work from any material, they just have to bend well. Joiner's glue should not be replaced with hot, or even more with super-glue.

Step 1. On paper, you need to draw the main details of the future ship. You can print them out if you find suitable layouts for you on the Internet. Please note that in the course of work, your ideas may undergo small changes. This is not critical if you just want to build a ship in the old style, and not repeat the exact copy of a particular ship.

Step 2. For convenience, work with the ship was divided into several parts. The ship itself was also going to. The main time was taken by the manufacture of the central part of the ship. Then the front, rear and deck parts with a mast were made.

Step 3. First of all, according to the already existing drafts, make the skeleton of the ship. Be sure to make sure that all its edges are symmetrical. If there is a slight deviation somewhere, correct these flaws. Check that the ribs are exactly angled 90 degrees when attached.

Step 4. After the skeleton is ready, begin to draw out its side parts. To do this, glue a long rail along the center line of the side. Focus on it further when you stick the rest. It is better to stick Reiki in stages to facilitate your work. Apply enough glue, but make sure that it does not run down the rails. Fasten the slats with clamps, leaving them in this form until the glue completely dries. After the glue has dried, remove the clamps and continue to glue the slats in the next section.

Step 5. All places where gaps between the rails are formed, work through epoxy resin. All details of the ship, when ready, cover with varnish for wood.

Step 6. After the main work, proceed to finish. You can hide all possible aesthetic flaws at this stage. To do this, gently glue the strips overlying places with obvious defects. From rattan you can make a horizontal line that emphasizes the smooth shape of the ship. The base of the ship is ready.

Step 7. Masts need to be made of wooden rods and small flat pieces of wood. There will be two masts in the ship. Adjust the rods in advance to the calculated dimensions. To attach the masts, cut two pieces of wood 4 x 2 cm in size. Drill holes for the mast rods in them. From small rods, make a reinforcing grate and assemble the entire structure.

Step 8. Make a template for the deck of the ship from paper and on its basis construct the deck part from wooden strips. After letting it dry thoroughly, drill holes for attaching the masts. Insert and glue the masts. From the plywood, make the side handrails of the ship.

Step 9. Similarly, glue wooden strips in the front and back of the ship. They need to be glued on the side and on the deck, and from the pieces of plywood to make rods and handrails. All parts are fastened with wood glue. Do not forget to raise the back of the ship in steps.

Some people have a strange, but very remarkable and colorful hobby. It is called the assembly of ship models from wood. What is needed to make such a beautiful thing. Creating a model from a tree is not so simple. From this article you will learn how to create it from a tree with your own hands. And also we will make a short excursion into history.

Francis Drake

Many history buffs know the name "Iron Pirate", England was his homeland. He became the captain of a sailing ship at the age of 16. At first he was a ship priest, and then a simple sailor. But his fame really thundered when he became a brave and very formidable pirate. In the 16th century, he made quite a few voyages and took part in a considerable number of fights.

Golden Doe

At the dawn of fate, several sailing ships arrived at his property. Its main flagship was the ship "Pelican". This ship was a five-deck three-mast. On board were 20 artillery weapons. All kinds of marine stories rarely tell us that a ship that already has a name can be renamed, but it was with the Pelican that, by the will of fate, such a story happened. In 1578, Francis Drake changed the name of this ship to "Golden Hind" (in Russian this name sounds like "Golden Hind"). It was under this second that it was inscribed in sparkling gold letters in the world history of seafarers. Francis Drake committed quite a few dizzying acts on him, which were later told in history and adventure books.

It is such wonderful ships that force many to assemble models of ships from wood with their own hands. Drawings of many such structures can often be found on the Internet. So, inspired by the ancient history of navigation, we learn from this article information on how to do something like this.

DIY wooden ship model: from the beginning to the rainbow horizons

In fact, the history of modelism consists of several stages. In addition, each of these stages is associated with several features. A lover of miniature shipbuilding may need to be able to change the available materials. It is also important to expand the selection of modeling objects. After he has developed enough, then he may have mass production of models. The next step will be the development of poster exhibition modeling from the sets that he already has. Later, you can develop before the formation of individual segments. It can be anything - from ship models and to the flesh to copies of individual motorcycles, trucks, as well as all kinds of other cars.

DIY wooden ship models: drawings, instructions, tools

So, well, let's get down to creating such a ship. Cutting prefabricated ship models from wood is not an easy task. You will need a lot of tools for this. Among them are: a knife, a chisel, a hammer, a bar (and, if necessary, a saw), thin fabric, superglue, a long wooden spire, a rope, a drill. In addition to this, you will need two more very important parameters. Firstly, it is time, and secondly, the important quality of those people who are engaged in creating prefabricated wooden ship models is patience.

Wood craft

First you have to work with a chisel. You must file everything plus a clean old bolt that has a flat head. It will not take you so much time - just two minutes. In these two minutes, the pre-processed bar will later become a ship. Now you need to strip the bar. You should carefully scrape off the bark. Hold the bar directly in the direction of the tool. Take the standard design as an example for our small ship models, which we will build on the principle below. Take a pencil and sketch on a bar a preliminary sketch. Next, treat the bar with a sharp knife. The inclination of the blade itself should be at an angle of about 10 degrees. When you plan, keep in mind that this is not the easiest job, and therefore be patient. You should not forget that if for any reason you are mistaken, then it will be difficult to correct everything. Remove the chips layer by layer, while you should try and process the original bar as smoothly as possible. It is important that the top and bottom should be parallel.

Note that you don’t have to throw chips at all. The fact is that, in principle, it can be used as additional material as mulch.

Thread of the front and sides of the ship

Well, now we need to draw the front, bottom, as well as the back. We will cut them in exactly the same way as it was mentioned above. It is necessary to make these parts even. In order to get the bow of the ship, you will have to saw off a piece in front. In the wake of this, you should round off the saw with a knife. When you make the nose, try to tilt the knife blade back. It should be directed towards the stern.

Drilling holes and subsequent installation of equipment

You must have several spiers. Therefore, drill a certain number of holes, they should be slightly larger in size than the beams themselves. It is important at the same time that there are not too many holes. Otherwise, a crack may form. And because of the crack, as you know, a severe disaster can happen - to flow. Do not use glue! If you do this, further work will be much more difficult.

Setting sails on the model

Decide, for a start, exactly how many panels you want to get on your final ship. We take for the condition that we will have four panels for the first mast and the second, and three for the last. Next, take a few wooden spiers and trim. Cut the trapezoid fabric. Then start gluing them. Make notches on the branches of the sails, fasten each branch with the corresponding notch. Then glue the middle of the edges to the sails. Repeat the same for all masts. It’s best if you build the back mast first, then the middle mast, and then the bow.

Now let's install the top flying sail. Cut the figure out of the fabric in the form of a kite. Take the thread and attach it to the opposite corner of the cloth. Leave the ends on both sides for all angles. Glue a small piece of thread on the top of the boat. It should be slightly higher than the bow of the boat itself. Measure the part from the opposite angle right up to the middle of the lower branch of the sail on the front mast. Then cut the thread itself, cut and glue the tip to the appropriate place.

On each side you should leave some strings. Pull them back and glue them straight into the boat. Then you can cut off the excess rope. In the same way, create and attach the back panel. It should be attached to the back of the rear sail. Measure, trim, and make sure it fits into the two protrusions. Then glue them in the corners.

Well, now you have learned how to make simple ship models from wood. And although in this article everything is described only in general terms, we hope that it will help you in your future career as a “shipbuilder”. Unless, of course, you are interested in this. Believe me, this is a worthwhile lesson!

For lovers of modeling, sheets of pressed and glued wooden veneers have always been one of the most popular materials. They are easy to cut, perfectly processed, ship drawings made of plywood are easy to find on the net, and therefore it is from plywood patterns that many craftsmen begin their acquaintance with modeling various ships.

Making models with your own hands is a very difficult task, requiring considerable knowledge and certain skill. In the article we will tell only about the most basic techniques, and you will hone further skill yourself.

Materials for work

If you want to make a small model of the ship, then you will need such materials:

  • Wood - cedar, linden, walnut or other wood, preferably soft and not fibrous. Wood blanks should be smooth, without knots and damage. Wood can be used both as a material for the main elements of the model (hull, deck), and for fine detailing.
  • Plywood - perhaps the most popular material. For ship modeling, either balsa or birch is used, since it is these types of wood that provide the minimum number of chips when sawing. Model ship plywood, as a rule, has a thickness of 0.8 to 2 mm.

Note! Sheets of beech veneer of small thickness are sometimes used as an alternative to birch: although they are inferior in strength, they bend much easier.

  • Veneer - thin plates of natural wood of expensive species. Typically used for plywood, i.e. pasting of a surface from inexpensive material.
  • Fasteners - Thin Chains, Laces, Threads, Brass and Copper Studs.

In addition, we will definitely need wood glue, cardboard and tracing paper to transfer patterns, etc. Fine detailing is made of metal casting. As an alternative to metal, colored polymer clay may be used.

Making a souvenir boat

Preparation for work

Any work begins with preparation, and modeling is by no means an exception.

  • First you need to decide what we will build. If you have not dealt with ship-making art before, we recommend downloading the ship's drawings from plywood on the net: as a rule, they contain all the necessary information and are understandable even to a beginner.

Note! Kits are available for sale that allow you to assemble the ship from finished parts. For beginners, such kits will be interesting (although the price of most of them is very substantial), but it’s better to learn the technology from scratch.

  • After analyzing the drawing, we check whether everything necessary is available. In principle, if something is missing, then it will be possible to purchase a bit later, because building a ship (albeit a miniature one) is not a quick task!

  • Having printed the drawing, we make templates of the main parts.
  • We transfer templates to.

Cut and assemble parts

You can cut workpieces using either a manual or an electric model jigsaw.

The latter is more expensive, but with it you are less tormented when cutting small parts:

  • In the plywood sheet, we make a starting hole into which we insert a file or a jigsaw blade.
  • We cut the part, trying to move exactly along the marked contour.
  • We process the cut workpiece with a file, removing small chamfers at the edges and removing the inevitable chips and burrs.

Advice! When working on one element (deck, sides, keel, etc.), we immediately cut out all the parts necessary for assembly. So we will spend much less time, and the work will progress faster.

When everything is ready, we begin assembling our ship.

  • First, we put transverse frames on the longitudinal beam - keel. A groove is usually provided at the bottom of each frame to secure it to the plywood keel.
  • For bonding, you can use standard glue, or you can use special glue mixtures intended for ship modeling.
  • We fix the upper parts of the frames to the deck. For simple models, the deck is a single sheet of plywood, while for complex models it can be multi-level.
  • After the glue on the frames has dried, we begin to sheathe the sides with thin strips of plywood. The thickness of the material should be no more than 1.5 mm, since only in this case we can bend the skin without the risk of damaging it.
  • For bending, you can heat and moisten. After that, the material will bend without difficulty, and over time it will acquire a stable form.

Note! The body for painting can be pasted over with a continuous sheet. But to simulate board cladding, it is better to use strips up to 10 mm wide (depending on scale).

  • The glued plywood is fixed with clamps and clamps and left to dry.

Final finish

By and large, on this carpentry  ends and art begins.

When the case is assembled and dried, we need:

  • Make from thin plywood and secure deck superstructures.

  • To increase the sides so that they protrude above the plane of the deck.
  • To glue the surface of the deck with wooden veneer or to draw it with an awl, imitating a plank cladding.
  • Make and install all the small parts like the steering wheel and steering wheel.
  • Fasten the mast with all additional devices (the so-called mast), install the sails and stretch this entire structure with the help of rigging threads.

In conclusion, all plywood parts need to be treated with stain and varnished. This will provide our souvenir with at least a couple of decades of preservation.

Conclusion

Almost everyone can make a simple boat out of plywood with their own hands - enough patience and minimal skills to work with a jigsaw (read also the article). But if you want to implement a complex drawing with many small details, then you will have to work hard. That's why we recommend starting with the simplest models, gradually building up your skills!
